Effects of short inter-pregnancy/birth interval on adverse perinatal outcomes in Asia-Pacific region: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Short inter-pregnancy or birth interval is associated with an increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. However, some emerging evidence questions this association and there are also inconsistencies among the existing findings. This study aimed to systematically review the evidence regarding the effect of short inter-pregnancy or birth intervals on adverse perinatal outcomes in the Asia-Pacific region. METHODS: A comprehensive search of five databases was conducted targeting studies published between 2000 to 2023. Studies that reported on short inter-pregnancy or birth interval

Antenatal corticosteroid administration-to-birth interval and neonatal outcomes in very preterm infants: A secondary analysis based on a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the prevalent use of antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) to prevent preterm infants' adverse neonatal complications, there is currently no consensus on administration-to-birth intervals of ACS. International guidelines broadly agree that the administration of antenatal corticosteroids should be within 7 days prior to preterm birth. However, there is little evidence to support narrower optimal ACS administration-to-birth interval time. This study was undertaken to investigate the association between the administration-to-birth interval of ACS which is bounded by 48 hours and n

A comparative analysis of the influence of contraceptive use and fertility desire on the duration of second birth interval in four sub-Saharan African countries.

BACKGROUND: Fertility decline characterised by inter-birth intervals remains rather slow or stall in many countries of sub-Saharan African (SSA). Non-adherence to optimal inter-birth intervals often occasioned by low prevalence of contraceptive use and high fertility desires often lead to poor maternal and child health outcomes. Additionally, information on the influence of contraception and fertility desire on interval between first and second births (SBI) is rarely available. This study therefore aimed to examine the influence of fertility desire and contraception on SBI among women in four

The association between interpregnancy interval and severe maternal morbidities using revised national birth certificate data: A probabilistic bias analysis.

BACKGROUND: Severe maternal morbidity continues to be on the rise in the US. Short birth spacing is a modifiable risk factor associated with maternal morbidity, yet few studies have examined this association, possibly due to few available data sources to examine these rare events. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between interpregnancy interval (IPI) and severe maternal morbidity using near-national birth certificate data and account for known under-reporting using probabilistic bias analysis. METHODS: We used revised 2014-2017 birth certificate data, restricting to resident women with

Change in paternity, risk of placental abruption and confounding by birth interval: a population-based prospective cohort study in Norway, 1967-2009.

OBJECTIVES: We examined abruption risk in relation to change in paternity, and evaluated if birth interval confounds this association. SETTING: Population-based study of singleton births in Norway between 1967 and 2009. PARTICIPANTS: Women who had their first two (n=747 566) singleton births in the Norwegian Medical Birth Registry. The associations between partner change between pregnancies and birth interval were examined in relation to abruption in a series of logistic regression models. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Risk, as well as unadjusted and adjusted OR of placental abruption in relati

Ensemble learning to predict short birth interval among reproductive-age women in Ethiopia: evidence from EDHS 2016-2019.

BACKGROUND: A birth interval of less than 33 months was considered short, and in low- income countries like Ethiopia, a short birth interval is the primary cause of approximately 822 maternal deaths every day. Due to that this study aimed to predict short birth interval and associated factors among women (15-49) in Ethiopia using ensemble learning algorithms. METHODS: A secondary data analysis of Ethiopian demographic health servey from 2016 to 2019 was performed. a total of weighted sample of 12,573 women in the reproductive age group was included in this study. Data have been extracted and

Short birth/pregnancy interval and its association with adverse maternal outcomes in Asia Pacific region: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Short interpregnancy/birth interval (SIBI) may be associated with greater risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to synthesise the literature on the association between SIBI and adverse maternal outcomes in Asia-Pacific. METHODS: Five databases were searched for studies published between 2000 and 2023. Studies were eligible if they reported an association between SIBI and adverse maternal outcomes (e.g., anaemia). Studies that met the WHO's definition of SIBI were included in the meta-analysis. The key findings were then summarised through qualitative synthesis and

Onset of asphyxial state in nonrespiring interval between cord clamping and ventilation increases hemodynamic lability of birth transition in preterm lambs.

Experimentally, a typical ∼2-min cord clamp-to-ventilation interval in preterm lambs is accompanied by increased hemodynamic lability of the birth transition. However, whether this lability is related to development of asphyxia after cord clamping, or can be avoided with a shorter clamp-to-ventilation interval, is unknown. To address these questions, anesthetized preterm fetal lambs (gestation 127 ± 2 days) were instrumented with ductus arteriosus and left pulmonary artery flow probes to obtain right ventricular (RV) output, brachiocephalic trunk and aortic isthmus flow probes to measure left

Association Between Short Birth Interval and Immediate Adverse Perinatal Outcomes Among Women Delivering at a Tertiary Hospital in South-Western Uganda.

PURPOSE: Immediate adverse perinatal outcomes (IAPO) are more likely to occur in women with short inter-birth birth intervals (SIBI) compared to optimal inter-birth interval (OIBI). This study determined the association between short inter-birth interval and immediate adverse perinatal outcomes among women delivering at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among mother-baby pairs admitted to MRRH postnatal ward within 24 hours after delivery from the period running from March 2023 to June 2023. A history of recurrent pregnancy loss is associated with increased perinatal complications, but not necessarily a longer birth interval: a population study spanning 18 years.

STUDY QUESTION: Is there a difference in the time interval between the first and second live births among individuals with and without recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Primary RPL (two or more pregnancy losses before the first live birth) is associated with a shorter time interval between the first and second live births compared with individuals without RPL, but this association is reversed in patients with secondary RPL (RPL patients with no or one pregnancy loss before the first live birth). WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: There is limited information regarding the ability to have m

Importance of dam BW change and calf birth weight in double-muscled Belgian Blue cattle and its relationship with parity and calving interval.

Factors affecting calving interval (CI) in double-muscled Belgian Blue (DMBB) beef cows were investigated with regard to the BW yield (BWY) of the cow-calf pair, using 834 CI records from 386 females with parities 1 to 6. The effect of parity and CI on BWY was also studied. Cow-calf pair BWY was defined as calf birth weight plus dam BWY per CI. CI (mean±s.e.: 404±1.9 days) was affected by parity, calving season, suckling and calf birth weight/dam weight. Primiparous cows had a shorter CI than cows with three or more calvings (P<0.05), with an intermediate CI for second-calf cows. Spring calvin

Variations in prenatal sociodemographic factors associated with intellectual disability: a study of the 20-year interval between two birth cohorts in northern Finland.

The authors followed two cohorts of children born in northern Finland in 1966 (n = 12,058) and 1985-1986 (n = 9,432) to examine whether associations between maternal sociodemographic factors assessed during pregnancy and intellectual disability in the offspring changed over a 20-year interval. Both of the cohorts were followed up to the age of 11.5 years using similar methods and definitions of intellectual disability. Data on sociodemographic factors were based on comparable questionnaires returned by the mothers during the 25th week of gestation. Despite an interval of 20 years between the c

Effect of dexamethasone on newborn survival at different administration-to-birth intervals: A secondary analysis of the WHO ACTION (Antenatal CorticosTeroids for Improving Outcomes in Preterm Newborn)-I trial.

BACKGROUND: The WHO ACTION-I trial demonstrated that dexamethasone significantly reduced neonatal mortality when administered to women at risk of early preterm birth in low-resource countries. We conducted a secondary analysis to determine how these benefits can be optimised, by evaluating the effect of dexamethasone compared to placebo on newborn mortality and severe respiratory distress outcomes at different administration-to-birth intervals, and identifying the interval with the greatest benefits. METHODS: The WHO ACTION-I trial was a multi-country, individually-randomised, parallel-group,

Successful obstetrical management of 110-day intertwin delivery interval without cerclage: counseling and conservative management approach to extreme asynchronous twin birth.

BACKGROUND: This report describes a patient counseling approach and non-surgical management of a dichorionic-diamniotic twin pregnancy where delivery of the second twin followed the delivery of the first by 110 days. CASE PRESENTATION: An early transvaginal sonogram at 19 1/2 weeks suggested cervical dilation with protruding amniotic membranes. Tocolytic and antibiotic therapy was initiated; no cerclage was placed. Spontaneous rupture of membranes and cord prolapse occurred 48 h later, resulting in delivery of a stillborn female infant. Conservative management was offered after counseling for

Association of interpregnancy interval with adverse pregnancy outcomes according to the outcomes of the preceding pregnancy: a longitudinal study with 4.7 million live births from Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Earlier studies have proposed a link between the Interpregnancy Interval (IPI) and unfavorable birth outcomes. However, it remains unclear if the outcomes of previous births could affect this relationship. We aimed to investigate whether the occurrence of adverse outcomes-small for gestational age (SGA), preterm birth (PTB), and low birth weight (LBW)-at the immediately preceding pregnancy could alter the association between IPI and the same outcomes at the subsequent pregnancy. METHODS: We used a population-based linked cohort from Brazil (2001-2015). IPI was measured as the diff

Early pregnancy reference intervals; 29 serum analytes from 4 to 12 weeks' gestation in naturally conceived and uncomplicated pregnancies resulting in live births.

Background Pregnancy introduces major physiological changes that also alter biochemical analytes. Maternal and perinatal health can be optimized by early intervention and therefore, pregnancy-specific reference intervals (RIs) for the local population are warranted. While the second and third trimester-specific changes are well described, the first trimester is less well characterized. We therefore wanted to facilitate early detection of abnormalities by generating first trimester reference values for 29 common analytes. Methods In a prospective early pregnancy (PEP) cohort (2016-2017), 203 pr

A retrospective study investigating the association of parity, breed, calving month and year, and previous parity milk yield and calving interval with twin births in US dairy cows.

Twinning costs the dairy industry an estimated $96 million each year. Twin pregnancy occurrence in high-producing dairy cows is primarily a result of multiple ovulations associated with low circulating concentrations of progesterone due to high milk production. The present retrospective observational study aimed to identify associations between (1) previous parity milk yield and subsequent twin birth prevalence, (2) twin birth with same parity milk production and calving interval (CInt), and (3) twin birth and the subsequent twin calving. The final data set included almost 2.9 million US dairy

Inter-pregnancy interval and uterine rupture during a trial of labour after one previous caesarean delivery and no previous vaginal births: a retrospective population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Short interpregnancy interval (IPI) following caesarean delivery is associated with uterine rupture in subsequent pregnancies. However, the interval required to minimise this risk is unknown. We investigated how the interval between pregnancies and induction or augmentation of labour affect the likelihood of uterine rupture among parturients with one previous livebirth by caesarean delivery who had a subsequent trial of labour. METHODS: In this population-based cohort study, we used data from U.S National Vital Statistics System from 2011 to 2021. Multiple pregnancies and births o
