Effect of birth order on neonatal morbidity and mortality among very low birthweight twins: a population based study.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of birth order on the risk for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), chronic lung disease (CLD), adverse neurological findings, and death in very low birthweight (VLBW; < 1500 g) twins. METHODS: A population based study of VLBW infants from the Israel National VLBW Infant Database. The sample included all complete sets of VLBW twin pairs admitted to all 28 neonatal intensive care units between 1995 and 1999. Outcome variables were compared by birth order and stratified by mode of delivery and gestational age, using General Estimating Equation models, with results

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus by birth order: A descriptive study across lifetime reproductive history.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus are known to be strongly related, and underlying maternal cardiometabolic dysfunction has been proposed as a mechanism for both complications. A comparison of the trends by birth order for the two complications may reveal insights into their shared or different causes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway from 1999 to 2020 with an aim to compare risk by birth order for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus. Visualizations of cross-sectiona

ACETAMINOPHEN ADMINISTERING IN ORDER TO OBLITERATE HEMODYNAMICALLY SIGNIFICANT PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS IN NEONATES WITH EXTREMELY LOW BIRTH WEIGHT.

BACKGROUND: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is one of the most common pathological conditions within the neonatal period Functioning of hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus can cause a development ofvarious complications. This is why the earliest possible drug therapy or surgery is required in order to eliminate this fetal communication. THE AIM: to study the efficacy and safety of acetaminophen administering to infants with low birth weight for medical obliteration of hemodynamically significant ductus arteriosus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 16 infants with gest

RHD maternal-fetal genotype incompatibility and schizophrenia: extending the MFG test to include multiple siblings and birth order.

Rh incompatibility disease (ie Rh hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn) has been implicated as a risk factor for schizophrenia. Here, we extend the maternal-fetal genotype incompatibility (MFG) test used in an earlier case-parent trio study that found significant evidence for an increased risk of schizophrenia in RHD MFG-incompatible children. We modify the MFG test for case-parent trios to include any number of siblings. This modified test enables us to use more of the available data from the earlier study. The increased sample size not only gives us greater power to test for MFG incomp

Prenatal gender preference of mothers of feminine and masculine boys: relation to sibling sex composition and birth order.

A mother's (prenatal) wish for a girl has, at times, been implicated as an etiological factor for boyhood femininity or its DSM-III-R diagnostic equivalent, the Gender Identity Disorder of Childhood. In one sample of 52 feminine and 52 nonclinical control boys from Los Angeles, the proportion of mothers who recalled a wish for a girl during the pregnancy did not differ significantly between groups (26.9% vs. 19.2%, respectively); however, in both groups, the maternal wish for a girl was significantly more common in sibships in which all of the proband's older siblings were male. In a second sa

Birth Order and Sibling Sex Ratio in a Population with High Fertility: Are Turkish Male to Female Transsexuals Different?

Western studies have consistently found that androphilic (sexually attracted to men) male-to-female transsexuals have a later birth order and a relative excess of brothers compared with appropriate control participants. However, non-Western studies on birth order and sibling sex ratio in androphilic males (transsexual or non-transsexual) are rare. The objective of the study was to test the hypothesis that androphilic male-to-female transsexuals have a late birth order and a relative excess of brothers in a non-Western culture with a higher fertility rate. The participants were 60 androphilic m

Adverse outcomes in early term versus full-term deliveries among higher-order cesarean births.

OBJECTIVE: In an attempt to avoid emergency deliveries of women with multiple prior scars, providers may choose to schedule those repeat cesarean births prior to 39 weeks. Our primary goal was to compare rates of assisted ventilation use between neonates with early term (37°-386 weeks) and full-term (39°-396 weeks) deliveries among women with three or more prior cesarean births. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of women with three or more previous cesarean births. The study group consisted of women who delivered at early term (37°-386 weeks). The control group consisted of women who deli

Primordial germ cells in an oligochaete annelid are specified according to the birth rank order in the mesodermal teloblast lineage.

The primordial germ cells (PGCs) in the oligochaete annelid Tubifex tubifex are descentants of the mesodermal (M) teloblast and are located in the two midbody segments X and XI in which they serve as germline precursors forming the testicular gonad and the ovarian gonad, respectively. During embryogenesis, vasa-expressing cells (termed presumptive PGCs or pre-PGCs) emerge in a variable set of midbody segments including the genital segments (X and XI); at the end of embryogenesis, pre-PGCs are confined to the genital segments, where they become PGCs in the juvenile. Here, using live imaging of

[The value of special care in risk pregnancies in order to prevent low birth weight. 1. Results of treatment].

In this paper the results of special monitoring of pregnancies with risks are reported and compared with a collective of not specially monitored pregnancies with risks. It is possible to reduce the total rate of low birth weights and the rate of premature infants significantly by special care with consequent use of a schedule of monitoring. The rate of premature infants was 3.7 per cent in the specially monitored collective as far as the women were accessible to a prolongation of gestation. In the cases of birth weights up to 2500 g a significant removal towards higher and more favourable birt

[Does there exist a correlation between the number of whorls of the finger tips and birth order of sibs? (author's transl)].

It was stated by Birdsong and Rashad (1972) that the child of birth order number six of Korean families has significantly more true whorls on the finger tips than older brothers and sisters. To verify this assertion we studied a sample of all members of 43 normal German families with 5 or more legitimate children. The findings of the epidermal finger pattern types and those of the toe patterns were analysed. Results indicate a different conclusion regarding the number of digital whorls which were not increased statistically with increasing number of sibs. The number of whorls were randomly dis

Twin's Birth-Order Differences in Height and Body Mass Index From Birth to Old Age: A Pooled Study of 26 Twin Cohorts Participating in the CODATwins Project.

We analyzed birth order differences in means and variances of height and body mass index (BMI) in monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins from infancy to old age. The data were derived from the international CODATwins database. The total number of height and BMI measures from 0.5 to 79.5 years of age was 397,466. As expected, first-born twins had greater birth weight than second-born twins. With respect to height, first-born twins were slightly taller than second-born twins in childhood. After adjusting the results for birth weight, the birth order differences decreased and were no longer st

The association between birth order and childhood leukemia may be modified by paternal age and birth weight. Pooled results from the International Childhood Cancer Cohort Consortium (I4C).

The "delayed infection hypothesis" states that a paucity of infections in early childhood may lead to higher risks of childhood leukemia (CL), especially acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Using prospectively collected data from six population-based birth cohorts we studied the association between birth order (a proxy for pathogen exposure) and CL. We explored whether other birth or parental characteristics modify this association. With 2.2 × 106 person-years of follow-up, 185 CL and 136 ALL cases were ascertained. In Cox proportional hazards models, increasing birth order (continuous) was in

Receptor tyrosine phosphatases regulate birth order-dependent axonal fasciculation and midline repulsion during development of the Drosophila mushroom body.

Receptor tyrosine phosphatases (RPTPs) are required for axon guidance during embryonic development in Drosophila. Here we examine the roles of four RPTPs during development of the larval mushroom body (MB). MB neurons extend axons into parallel tracts known as the peduncle and lobes. The temporal order of neuronal birth is reflected in the organization of axons within these tracts. Axons of the youngest neurons, known as core fibers, extend within a single bundle at the center, while those of older neurons fill the outer layers. RPTPs are selectively expressed on the core fibers of the MB. Ptp

Risk of intra-amniotic infection/inflammation and respiratory distress syndrome according to the birth order in twin preterm neonates.

Objective: Prior studies have suggested that nonpresenting twins are more likely to develop respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) than presenting twins. While the underlying mechanism is not known, exposure to intra-amniotic infection/inflammation (IAI) has been associated with a reduced risk of RDS in singleton gestations. In the current study, we compared the risk of RDS in preterm twin neonates according to birth order with adjustment for the presence or absence of IAI.Methods: The study population consisted of consecutive twin neonates who delivered ≤35 weeks and underwent amniocentesis with

Association between birth order and emergency room visits and acute hospital admissions following pediatric vaccination: a self-controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the association between a child's birth order and emergency room (ER) visits and hospital admissions following 2-,4-,6- and 12-month pediatric vaccinations. METHODS: We included all children born in Ontario between April 1(st), 2006 and March 31(st), 2009 who received a qualifying vaccination. We identified vaccinations, ER visits and admissions using health administrative data housed at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. We used the self-controlled case series design to compare the relative incidence (RI) of events among 1(st)-born and later-born child

Birth order and sibling sex ratio in homosexual transsexual South Korean men: Effects of the male-preference stopping rule.

Two biodemographic variables - birth order and sibling sex ratio - have been examined in several Western samples of homosexual transsexual men. The results have consistently shown that homosexual transsexuals have a later birth order and come from sibships with an excess of brothers to sisters; the excess of brothers has been largely driven by the number of older brothers and hence has been termed the fraternal birth order effect. In the present study the birth order and sibling sex ratio were examined in an Asian sample of 43 homosexual transsexual men and 49 heterosexual control men from Sou
