Birth weight and ponderal index percentiles for twins based on sex and chorionicity in a center of Guangdong Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) which is judged based on birth weight and gestational age, is associated with increased neonatal mobility and mortality and also has a further impact on physical and mental health during later in life. Using the birth weight percentile for singletons to assess twins might not accurately reflect the growth status of the twins; this could potentially lead to an incorrect evaluation of growth-restricted children. For a more precise assessment of twin newborns, it is beneficial to utilize twin-specific birth weight percentile curves and ponderal i

Multidisciplinary care for patients with epidermolysis bullosa from birth to adolescence: experience of one Italian reference center.

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a disabling and chronic genodermatosis characterized by mucocutaneous fragility with blister formation after minimal trauma. Severity ranges between very mild forms to extremely severe or lethal subtypes. Depending on disease subtypes, blisters may be localized also in larynx, bladder, esophagus, and most frequent disease complications are malnutrition, chronic anemia, osteoporosis, limb contracture and early development of squamous cell carcinomas. EB is classified into four major groups: EB simplex (EBS), junctional EB (JEB), dystrophic EB (DEB) and

Changes in Mortality and Cerebral Palsy in Extremely Low-Birth-Weight Infants in a Tertiary Center in Hong Kong.

Introduction. We retrospectively reviewed a cohort of extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) babies born at Queen Mary Hospital and explored if there is any time trend in survival and short-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. Methods. We included ELBW infants born at Queen Mary Hospital between 2008 and 2015. The relationships between multiple risk factors with survival and neurodevelopmental outcomes were analyzed by either Cox regression or univariate logistic regression analysis. We also compared this birth-year period with our previous study from 1993 to 2002. Results. Two hundred seventeen ELBW

Prenatal diagnosis, birth location, surgical center, and neonatal mortality in infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Most studies have not demonstrated improved survival after prenatal diagnosis of critical congenital heart disease, including hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). However, the effect of delivery near a cardiac surgical center (CSC), the recommended action after prenatal diagnosis, on HLHS mortality has been poorly investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using Texas Birth Defects Registry data, 1999 through 2007, which monitored >3.4 million births, we investigated the association between distance (calculated driving time) from birth center to CSC and neonatal mortality in 463 infant

[Prematurity and placental insufficiency in twin pregnancies. Results during the care of multiple pregnancies at a center for premature births].

An analysis was made of 151 twin pregnancies, in 1975, 1978 and 1979, to study the effectiveness of obstetrico-neonatological attention to bigeminal pregnancies in a premature infant centre. -- Significant rise in early detection of bigeminal pregnancy due to much wider use of ultrasonic diagnosis and intensification of hospital treatment have drastically reduced the number of extremely immature twin births by delaying delivery to somewhere between the 34th and 36th weeks of gravidity. With the use of tocolysis nearly unchanged throughout the period of observation, change in average gestationa

Factors Affecting Mode of Birth in Women With Preexisting Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes: A Retrospective Cohort at a Tertiary Referral Center.

Women with preexisting diabetes and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at higher risk for adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. However, there is no consensus on a uniform approach regarding mode of birth (MOB) for all forms of diabetes. The aim of the study is to compare MOB in women with preexisting diabetes and GDM and possible factors influencing it. A retrospective cohort study of women with GDM and preexisting diabetes between 2015 and 2021 at a tertiary referral center was conducted. One thousand three hundred eighty-five singleton pregnancies were included. One thousand twenty-t

Why are women deciding against birth in alongside midwifery units? A prospective single-center study from Germany.

OBJECTIVES: For healthy women entering labor after an uneventful pregnancy, advantages of birth in midwife-led models of care have been demonstrated. We aimed to study the level of awareness regarding care in alongside midwifery units (AMU), factors involved in the decision for birth in obstetrician-led units (OLU), and wishes for care and concerns about birth in women registering for birth in OLU who would have been eligible for care in AMU. METHODS: Healthy women with a term singleton cephalic fetus after an uneventful pregnancy course booking for birth in OLU were prospectively recruited.
