The relationship between skull morphology, masticatory muscle force and cranial skeletal deformation during biting.

The human skull is gracile when compared to many Middle Pleistocene hominins. It has been argued that it is less able to generate and withstand high masticatory forces, and that the morphology of the lower portion of the modern human face correlates most strongly with dietary characteristics. This study uses geometric morphometrics and finite element analysis (FEA) to assess the relationship between skull morphology, muscle force and cranial deformations arising from biting, which is relevant in understanding how skull morphology relates to mastication. The three-dimensional skull anatomies of

Correlation of Fracture Resistance of Dental Implants and Bite Force in Dogs described in the literature: An In Vitro Study.

Dental implants are not routinely used for rehabilitation in veterinary dentistry. For some veterinarians, further studies are necessary to be considered for clinical use in animals. The objective of the present in vitro study was to evaluate static fatigue of dental implants and to correlate that with the bite strength of dogs described in the literature. Sixty implants and abutments were used with the smallest diameter of each brand of implant utilized in the study. Three groups (n  =  20) were created on the basis of the implant diameter, all with external hex connector: 3.30 mm (group 1),

Assessment of jaw muscle activity, bite force and clinical findings in patients with severe tooth wear and matched controls.

The association between tooth wear and sleep bruxism is unclear. This study investigates jaw muscle activity and clinical findings in patients with sleep bruxism and severe tooth wear and matched controls. Participants underwent electromyographic (EMG) recording calibrated for dynamic bite force during sleep and analysed as EMG event duration, events per hour, work volume and accumulated dynamic bite force. In addition, static maximal voluntary bite force, saliva tests, health questionnaires and clinical examination were obtained from all participants. No significant differences were found bet

Sex-Specific Phenotype-Performance Links: Divergent Correlations Between Morphology, Coloration, and Bite Force in the Mountain Dragon (Diploderma vela).

Sexual dimorphism in lizards arises from the dynamic interplay between natural and sexual selection, manifesting in divergent phenotypic traits across taxa. A key unresolved question is whether the relationship between such sexually dimorphic traits and functional performance also differs between the sexes. This study investigated this question in the mountain dragon (Diploderma vela), a protected species endemic to the upper Lancang River basin in southwestern China, by quantifying its sexual dimorphism in morphology and coloration and assessing their sex-specific correlations with bite force

A hydrogel-based triboelectric noncontact-ionic pressure dual-function sensing system for measuring mandibular movement trajectory and bite force.

This study proposes a flexible sensing system for simultaneously measuring mandibular movement trajectories and bite force during mastication. The system employs a dual-mode sensing mechanism: the triboelectric module realizes non-contact detection of movement trajectories, while the ionic supercapacitor module achieves contact-based quantitative monitoring of bite force. The triboelectric unit delivers a peak voltage of 0.2 V, with signal attenuation below 5% after 10,000 s of continuous cycling, enabling stable capture of dynamic occlusion trajectories. The ionic unit exhibits a high sensiti

Reliability and measurement error of anterior maximum voluntary bite force in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and healthy children.

In children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be involved. As a consequence, the oral function can be impaired due to joint and/or muscle involvement of the masticatory system with a negative influence on the maximum bite force. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to establish the reliability of AMVBF in children with JIA and healthy children. Children with JIA and healthy children conducted three attempts of AMVBF. The reliability of AMVBF measurement was determined by the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) by age, standard error of me

Effect of Botulinum Toxin Injection on EMG Activity and Bite Force in Masticatory Muscle Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is increasingly used in treating masticatory muscle pain disorder; however, safe doses and reinjection intervals still need to be established. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the degree and duration of the impairment of masticatory muscle performance. Fifty-seven subjects were randomly divided into two groups: one of which received BoNT-A first (n = 28) while the other received saline first (n = 29), with the cross-over being in week 16, and a total follow-up period of 32 weeks. A total dose of 50 U of BoNT-A was injected in the mas

Assessing the reliability of an integrated device measuring tongue pressure and bite force among dentate individuals - An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss leading to complete edentulism negatively impacts quality of life and oral function. Reduced biting force capability affects normal oral function in those who have lost teeth. Decreased tongue pressure significantly affects total oromotor function, especially swallowing. While devices exist to measure biting force and tongue pressure independently, integrated evaluation tools are lacking. This emphasizes developing a reliable integrated tool for simultaneous evaluation. Purpose: To evaluate the reliability of an integrated device designed to measure tongue pressure and b

Non-pathological facial asymmetry in adult women: an approach to bite force, occlusal contact distribution and masticatory muscle thickness.

UNLABELLED: Facial asymmetries, often subtle, can indicate imbalances that go beyond aesthetic concerns. AIM: This cross-sectional study analyzed molar bite force, occlusal contact distribution, and masseter and temporal muscle thickness in adult women with facial symmetry and slight non-pathological facial asymmetry, which generally goes unnoticed and is often considered a variation of normality. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Forty-two women aged 18 to 30 were evaluated for slight non-pathological facial asymmetry using the VECTRA M3. Two groups were established: facial symmetry (n=21) and slight n

Maximum bite force in patients with spinal muscular atrophy during the first year of nusinersen therapy - A pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Spinal muscular atrophy is a monogenic disease characterized by progressive spinal and bulbar muscle weakness and atrophy. It is caused by the degeneration of alpha-motoneurons. The recent approval of the antisense oligonucleotide nusinersen highlights the need for reliable clinical tools to evaluate motor function in patients with neuromuscular disorders. Measurement of the bulbar neuromuscular function (e.g., bite force) could be an extension to existing motor scales, sensitive to more nuanced changes, especially in symptomatic patients with severely reduced functional abilities.

Effects of jaw clenching while wearing an occlusal splint on awareness of tiredness, bite force, and EEG power spectrum.

PURPOSE: Treatment with an occlusal splint is used for temporomandibular disorders, bruxism, and occlusal disturbance to relieve orofacial symptoms such as myofascial pain and jaw movement restriction. However, the effects of various types of occlusal splints have not been elucidated. We investigated the effects of jaw clenching with soft and hard occlusal splints on the awareness of tiredness, bite force, and EEG activity. METHODS: Six healthy adults were used as subjects, with a visual analogue scale utilized to evaluate the awareness of each patient's tiredness both preceding the session a

The biomechanical role of periodontal ligament in bonded and replanted vertically fractured teeth under cyclic biting forces.

After teeth are replanted, there are two possible healing responses: periodontal ligament healing or ankylosis with subsequent replacement resorption. The purpose of this study was to compare the fatigue resistance of vertically fractured teeth after bonding the fragments under conditions simulating both healing modes. Thirty-two human premolars were vertically fractured and the fragments were bonded together with Super-Bond C&B. They were then randomly distributed into four groups (BP, CP, CA, BA). The BP and CP groups were used to investigate the periodontal ligament healing mode whilst the

Muscle and joint mechanics during maximum force biting following total temporomandibular joint replacement surgery.

Total temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) surgery is the established treatment for severe temporomandibular joint disorders. While TMJR surgery is known to increase mouth-opening capacity, reduce pain and improve quality of life, little is known about post-surgical jaw function during activities of daily living such as biting and chewing. The aim of this study was to use subject-specific 3D bite force measurements to evaluate the magnitude and direction of joint loading in unilateral total TMJR patients and compare these data to those in healthy control subjects. An optoelectronic track

Correction of skeletal Class II--anterior deep bite and prominent chin by forced surgical rotation of the mandible.

The purpose of this paper is to describe a technique of forced surgical rotation of the mandible used in skeletal Class II patients with deep bite and prominent chin. Posterior occlusal composite onlays combined with preoperative orthodontic treatment without anterior intrusion increase the posterior rotational component of the surgical mandibular advancement, when removed during operation. This manoeuvre allows for the surgical closure of the posterior open bite, while anteriorly the deep bite is opened. This technique avoids bimaxillary rotation surgery with dorsal impaction in mild to moder

Long-term follow-up of early treatment of unilateral forced posterior cross-bite. Orofacial status.

Twenty-nine subjects, 20 years old on average and all treated at 4 years of age for unilateral forced posterior dento-alveolar cross-bite by grinding or by expansion of the upper dental arch, were clinically examined to evaluate the long-term effects of their treatment. The frequency of successful treatment-indicated as stable correction of the cross-bite-by means of only 1 treatment sequence was 59%; by grinding, 57%; and by expansion, 60%. The 18 subjects that had only been treated at the age of 4 years formed the 'early group' in our study. Eleven of our subjects had been retreated later in
