Effects of physical stress on complete blood count and venous blood gas profile of individuals with sickle cell trait.

The association between sickle cell trait (SCT) and adverse effects of exercise has been controversial. While individuals with SCT are at higher risk of sudden death, the mechanism for this outcome remains to be elucidated. In order to shed light on this controversy, we have monitored venous blood count and blood gas parameter values in normal and SCT subjects during treadmill exercise. White and red blood cell counts and hemoglobin changed significantly over time in both the SCT and normal groups, with peak exercise values different from pre-exercise or post-exercise values. Red blood cell co

Genetic Modifiers of White Blood Cell Count, Albuminuria and Glomerular Filtration Rate in Children with Sickle Cell Anemia.

Discovery and validation of genetic variants that influence disease severity in children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) could lead to early identification of high-risk patients, better screening strategies, and intervention with targeted and preventive therapy. We hypothesized that newly identified genetic risk factors for the general African American population could also impact laboratory biomarkers known to contribute to the clinical disease expression of SCA, including variants influencing the white blood cell count and the development of albuminuria and abnormal glomerular filtration rate.

Prognostic value of red blood cell distribution width/protein and red blood cell distribution width/platelet count ratios in intensive care burn patients.

BACKGROUND: Red cell distribution width (RDW), serum protein levels, platelet count (PLT), and RDW/protein and RDW/PLT ratios have been associated with adverse outcomes in various medical conditions such as sepsis and critical illness. This study aimed to investigate the association between these parameters and in-hospital mortality following severe burn injury. METHODS: Intensive care burn patients admitted between March 2007 and December 2020 with a total body surface area (TBSA) burned ≥ 20 % were analyzed. Multivariate analysis was conducted to examine variables associated with mortality.

Impact of visceral involvements and blood cell count abnormalities on survival in adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL).

Multiple visceral involvements and various blood cell count abnormalities are frequently manifested in adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) at diagnosis. We evaluated the effects of four visceral involvement (bone marrow (BM), skin, liver, spleen) and six blood cell count abnormalities (anemia, neutrophilia, thrombocytopenia, monocytosis, eosinophilia, basophilia) on the overall survival of 168 ATLL patients. In the aggressive type, BM involvement, skin involvement and monocytosis were significantly poor prognostic factors. Furthermore, concomitant involvement of BM and additional visceral or

MOFUN-CCC: A Multi-omics Intermediate Fusion Network for Digital White Blood Cell Count Prediction.

As the volume of omics data continues to grow exponentially, there is an increasing demand for innovative methodologies that combine multi-omics data to extract meaningful clinical insights. Absolute cell counts are a fundamental component of clinical evaluations for disease diagnosis, treatment, and patient management. While cellular deconvolution can estimate relative cell type proportions from bulk data, obtaining absolute cell counts from omics data remains rarely studied. In response to the clinical needs and challenges, we introduce a novel multi-modal deep learning model with intermedia

Combination Therapy Against Mood and Anxiety Disorders: Association Between Efficacy and White Blood Cell Count.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies suggest that hyperactivation of the immuno-inflammatory system, as reflected in cytokine levels, is associated with more severe symptoms in mood and anxiety disorders and weaker response to treatment. Here we examined whether the efficacy of a combination of bright light therapy, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and medication is associated with another immuno-inflammatory index, white blood cell count, before and/or after treatment, in a retrospective observational study. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 467 inpatients with major depressive, bipol

Exploring Blood Cell Count-Derived Ratios as Practical Diagnostic Tools for Scabies in Vulnerable Populations.

Scabies is a neglected tropical disease and represents a considerable global burden. Although consensus diagnostic criteria for scabies have been recently published, diagnosing scabies infestation remains challenging in clinical practice. We investigated the diagnostic utility of complete blood cell count (CBC) and CBC-derived ratios obtained at diagnosis in a set of 167 patients who are Vietnamese with confirmed scabies. These parameters were compared with those of patients with dermatophytosis (N = 800) and urticaria (N = 2023), two diseases frequent in Vietnam, which can present with simila

Relationship Between White Blood Cell Count and Bacteremia Using Interval Likelihood Ratios in Hospitalized Patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients with bacteremia often have elevated white blood cell (WBC) and neutrophil counts, yet these alone are poor predictors of bacteremia. Data on the continuous relationship between WBC response and bacteremia are lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize the relationship of WBC count, neutrophil percentage, and absolute neutrophil count (ANC) to bacteremia using interval likelihood ratios (ILRs) derived from a large sample of hospitalized patients. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study in a large healthcare system from 2017 to 2018. PATIENTS: This study included non-

The Role of Total White Blood Cell Count in Antipsychotic Treatment for Patients with Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Total white blood cell count (TWBCc), an index of chronic and low-grade inflammation, is associated with clinical symptoms and metabolic alterations in patients with schizophrenia. The effect of antipsychotics on TWBCc, predictive values of TWBCc for drug response, and role of metabolic alterations require further study. METHODS: Patients with schizophrenia were randomized to monotherapy with risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, aripiprazole, ziprasidone, perphenazine or haloperidol in a 6-week pharmacological trial. We repeatedly measured clinical symptoms, TWBCc, and metabolic m

The proteome signature of cord blood plasma with high hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell count.

Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) from umbilical cord blood (UCB) are used for transplantation to treat blood disorders. Methods to estimate the HSPC count in umbilical cord blood, and thereby identify high-value blood units, are time-consuming and costly. Recent studies indicate that the UCB plasma protein composition relates to the HSPC count. We compared the plasma proteome of UCB with high vs low HSPC cell count (>115 × 106 vs < 51 × 106 CD34+ cells l-1) by using a combination of global untargeted MS quantitative proteomics and targeted proximity extension assay (PEA) proteomi

Optimal peritoneal fluid white blood cell count for diagnosis of peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of peritonitis among peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients is based on clinical presentation, dialysis effluent white blood cell (WBC) count, and dialysis effluent culture. Peritoneal fluid WBC count is very important in the initial diagnosis of peritonitis. The purpose of this work was to determine the optimal number of peritoneal WBCs with different clinical presentations at admission to define PD-related peritonitis. METHODS: Medical records of chronic PD patients who underwent work-up for suspected peritonitis between 2008 and 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. Resu

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis with myeloproliferative syndrome with myelodysplasia: bronchoalveolar lavage reduces white blood cell count.

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is a rare disorder characterized by surfactant component accumulation in the alveolar space. Primary PAP is likely an autoimmune disorder caused by antibodies to granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF). When an underlying disease causes PAP, this is called secondary PAP. Hematologic malignancies are an important cause of secondary PAP. As the pathogenesis of primary PAP has become more fully understood, improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have followed. However, when PAP is secondary to an underlying hematologic malignanc

Variables associated with the platelet count 6 weeks after autologous peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation.

While abundant data exist documenting variables associated with early platelet engraftment after autologous PBPC transplantation, data concerning later sustained platelet engraftment is sparse. We retrospectively examined a series of 80 patients undergoing autologous PBPC transplantation with respect to their platelet count 6 weeks after transplant. Underlying diagnoses included breast cancer (n = 33), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (n = 32), Hodgkin's disease (n = 9), and other hematologic malignancies (n = 6). Patients received G-CSF for PBPC mobilization and collected a target threshold number of 2
