Point-of-Care Bilirubin Testing in Neonates: Comparative Performance of Blood Gas Analysis and Transcutaneous Bilirubinometry.

Background: Neonatal jaundice is a common condition with potentially severe complications such as bilirubin-induced neurological dysfunction and kernicterus. While serum bilirubin (SBR) remains the standard laboratory measurement, point-of-care methods, such as transcutaneous bilirubinometry (TcB) and blood gas analysers (BGAs), offer rapid, less invasive alternatives. Direct comparisons of their diagnostic accuracy remain limited. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess and compare diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of TcB and BGA against SBR in neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia scree

Assessment of ether anesthesia in normal and spinal cats using gas--liquid chromatographic analysis of blood.

A new gas-liquid chromatographic method was developed for the determination of diethylether in whole blood. Ether was quantitated by peak area ratio analysis with n-propanol as the internal standard using a flame ionization detector. Blood ether concentrations were determined in cats undergoing inhalational anesthesia by ether in oxygen. In normal spontaneously breathing cats, anesthesia began at ether concentrations of about 0.6 g/l, and respiratory arrest occurred at 2.4 g/l and above. Mean arterial blood pressure was well maintained throughout the entire anesthetic range. In spinal artifici

Venous Blood Gas (VBG) Analysis Is as Safe and Equally Reliable as Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Analysis in the Determination of Prognosis in Chronic Liver Disease Patients: A Study Conducted in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Introduction Chronic liver disease (CLD) frequently causes systemic complications, including acid-base disturbances, significantly influencing patient prognosis. Arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis is traditionally utilized to monitor these disturbances, but presents procedural risks, especially in patients with coagulopathies, which is a well-known complication of chronic liver disease (CLD). Venous blood gas (VBG) analysis has emerged as a safer alternative, yet its prognostic significance in CLD requires further investigation. Aim & objective This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic signif

Prognostic value of early point-of-care blood gas analysis in critically ill non-trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Critically ill non-trauma patients treated in the emergency department have a high risk of in-hospital mortality. While point-of-care diagnostics such as blood gas analysis are established tools for urgent management, data on their prognostic value in this specific patient cohort remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate whether initial blood gas parameters are independently associated with in-hospital mortality in critically ill non-trauma patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adult critically ill non-trauma patients treated in the emergency department of

Does postprandial lipemia interfere with blood gas analysis and assessment of acid-base status in dogs?

To evaluate the interference of postprandial lipemia on blood gas parameters and to assess the acid-base status by the quantitative approach of the strong ion model blood samples of 15 healthy dogs were collected during fasting (0 h) and at one (1 h), three (3 h) and five (5 h) hours after the induction of lipemia with a hypercaloric diet. Total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels were used to assess lipemia and these were correlated with the parameters evaluated accordingly. Anion gap decreased at 5 h without correlation with TC and TG, whereas other parameters measured by the blood

Cardiac output estimation based on arterial and venous blood gas analysis: proposal of a monitoring method.

Hemodynamic optimization is vital in high risk surgical patients or in high risk surgical procedures. The main objective of hemodynamic management is to maintain tissue perfusion and preserve aerobic metabolism through a cardiac output coupled with the metabolic demand. The technologies used for cardiac output monitoring use special techniques (e.g. lithium dilution or transpulmonary thermodilution) or implementation of dedicated devices with considerable rates of potential complications (pulmonary artery catheter). Thus, we propose a novel method to estimate cardiac output through the analysi

C-Reactive Protein and Blood Gas Analysis in Cases of Neonatal Encephalopathy Treated with Therapeutic Hypothermia.

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) is one of the important causes of mortality and morbidity today. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) applied to moderate and severe NE patients has neuroprotective effects. The role of C-reactive protein (CRP) in determining the clinical severity of NE is not clear. METHODS: Medical records of 118 NE patients treated with TH were reviewed. The patients were divided into two groups as CRP positive (CRP-P) (≥1 mg/dL) and CRP negative (CRP-N) (<1 mg/dL) according to the CRP value measured immediately before rewarming phase during TH. Cord blood base deficits (BD)

Predict respiratory distress syndrome by umbilical cord blood gas analysis in newborns with reassuring Apgar score.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal acidaemia at birth can increase neonatal morbidity and mortality and it is predictive of neonatal asphyxia. The umbilical blood gas analysis is a valid tool for the evaluation of neonatal acidaemia. However, umbilical cord blood gas analysis is commonly performed in high-risk situations or in the setting of Apgar scores < 7 at 5 min. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted from June to December 2018 at the Department of mother's and child's health, Poliambulanza Foundation Hospital Institute. Inclusion criteria were: full term newborns with body weight appropr

A policy of routine umbilical cord blood gas analysis decreased missing samples from high-risk births.

AIM: This study compared obstetric units practicing routine or selective umbilical cord blood gas analysis, with respect to the risk of missing samples in high-risk deliveries and in infants with birth asphyxia. METHODS: This was a Swedish population-based cohort study that used register data for 155 235 deliveries of live singleton infants between 2008 and 2014. Risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated to estimate the association between routine and selective umbilical cord blood gas sampling strategies and the risk of missing samples. RESULTS: Selective sampling increased t

The Impact of Prolonged Deceleration During the Second Stage of Labor on Umbilical Artery Blood Gas Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Wrist-worn accelerometers can capture stepping behavior passively, continuously, and remotely. Methods utilizing peak detection, threshold crossing, and frequency analysis have been used to detect steps from wrist-worn accelerometer data, but it remains unclear how different approaches perform across a range of walking speeds and free-living activities. In this study, we evaluated the performance of four open-source methods for deriving step counts from wrist-worn accelerometry data, when applied to data from a range of structured locomotion and free-living activities. Peripheral venous blood gas analysis for the diagnosis of respiratory failure, hypercarbia and metabolic disturbance in adults.

BACKGROUND: Arterial blood gas analysis (ABGA) is the reference standard for the diagnosis of respiratory failure (RF) and metabolic disturbance (MD), but peripheral venous blood gas analysis (PVBGA) is increasingly being used for the estimation of carbon dioxide, pH, and other variables in the context of acutely unwell adults presenting to hospitals and emergency departments. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this review is to evaluate the performance of PVBGA by comparing it with the reference standard ABGA, which is assumed to be error-free for the diagnosis of (1) respiratory failure,

Association of Gut Microbiota Composition in Pregnant Women Colonized with Group B Streptococcus with Maternal Blood Routine and Neonatal Blood-Gas Analysis.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonizes the vaginal and rectal mucosa in a substantial proportion of healthy women, and GBS is a risk factor for GBS-associated adverse birth outcomes, such as bacterial infection, in neonates. Whether changes in the gut microbiota of GBS-infected pregnant women are associated with maternal complete blood cell count (CBC) and neonatal blood-gas analysis is unknown. To explore the relationship between the intestinal microecological composition of pregnant women and maternal blood routine and neonatal blood-gas analysis, we collected intestinal microecology samples

Fluorescein Interferes With Hemoglobin Measurement During Intra-operative Point-of-Care Blood Gas Analysis: A Clinical Observation.

We highlight a clinically important but under-recognized interference in hemoglobin measurement caused by intravenous fluorescein during neurosurgical procedures. A 70-year-old woman undergoing brain tumor resection showed normal initial blood gas results, but repeated point-of-care co-oximetry failed to measure hemoglobin after fluorescein administration. An alternative method enabled successful measurement of hemoglobin and transfusion guidance. Similar measurement failures were recorded previously, with failure in 7 of 12 cases. The fact that analyzers using different absorbance wavelengths

Emergency Point-of-Care Blood Gas Analysis During Mass Gathering Events: Experiences of the Vienna City Marathon.

Background: Long-distance running impacts many organ systems. Aside from musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary events, the gastrointestinal and renal system as well as metabolic homeostasis and electrolyte balance can be affected. A respective medical support strategy enabling rapid diagnosis, triage, and treatment in the context of large sports events is thus of utmost importance. Incidents can be assessed and graded via point-of-care (POC) blood gas analysis (BGA). We thus aimed to evaluate the feasibility and benefits of its use during a large sports event. Methods: All documented patient con
