PURPOSE: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is an integrative measure of physiologic health, but how CRF relates to different body composition components and cardiometabolic health in community-dwelling adults remains uncertain, especially in obesity.
METHODS: In Framingham Heart Study (FHS) Generation 3/Omni-2 participants, body composition measures from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were related to peak oxygen uptake (VO2) and complementary exercise phenotypes assessed via cardiopulmonary exercise testing in sex-stratified multivariable linear models. Secondary analyses examined corre

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Obesity is present in up to 85% of individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and poses a major therapeutic challenge. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), initially developed for T2DM, are now widely used for obesity management and increasingly recognized for their impact on body composition beyond weight reduction. This review summarizes evidence on the effects of GLP-1RAs, particularly semaglutide and liraglutide, on fat mass, lean body mass (LBM), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and resting energy expenditure (REE).
RECENT FINDINGS: Clinical trials

This study aimed to address the limitations of conventional methods for measuring skeletal muscle mass for sarcopenia diagnosis by introducing an artificial intelligence (AI) system for direct computed tomography (CT) analysis. The primary focus was on enhancing simplicity, reproducibility, and convenience, and assessing the accuracy and speed of AI compared with conventional methods. A cohort of 3096 cases undergoing CT imaging up to the third lumbar (L3) level between 2011 and 2021 were included. Random division into preprocessing and sarcopenia cohorts was performed, with further random spl

OBJECTIVES: Body composition and strength of cisgender (cis) individuals are well established. However, those for transgender women (trans women) undergoing gender-affirming hormone therapy remain unclear. This study aimed to detect possible body composition and strength variations related to sarcopenia.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional comparative study of 37 trans women, 34 cis men, and 34 cis women. Body composition was measured in all individuals by bioelectrical impedance analysis; prehensile strength by dynamometry was studied in trans women.
RESULTS: In this study, trans women had

Cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in individuals with non-small cell lung cancer. Key features of CAC include alterations in body composition and body weight. Here, we explore the association between body composition and body weight with survival and delineate potential biological processes and mediators that contribute to the development of CAC. Computed tomography-based body composition analysis of 651 individuals in the TRACERx (TRAcking non-small cell lung Cancer Evolution through therapy (Rx)) study suggested that individuals in the bottom

OBJECTIVE: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory skin disease characterized by clinically scaly patches. It is known that skin diseases with chronic inflammation are associated with comorbid conditions such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and diabetes. In recent years, there are studies investigating the relationship of SD with metabolic syndrome, hypertension, obesity and nutritional factors. However, there is no study evaluating body composition parameters in SD patients. In the light of this information, it was aimed to evaluate the re

BACKGROUND: Zinc deficiency is related to lean body mass reduction, fat deposition, and obesity. Zinc acts in catalytic, structural, and regulatory functions, being an essential micronutrient to humans. It is crucial for maintaining lean body mass, synthesizing nucleic acids and proteins, and forming new tissues. Pre-existing zinc deficiency may contribute to obesity due to its relationship with fat deposition associated with short stature. This integrative review aims to analyze the association between zinc and body composition, hitherto very poorly established in previous studies.

BACKGROUND: Residency is known to consist of rigorous training that has contributed to increased rates of resident burn out, depression, and suicide. There have been recent efforts to attempt to combat and solve the rising levels of mental health concerns amongst physicians and physicians in training. While studies have examined the adverse effects of medical training on mental health, few have examined the associated changes in physical health. This study aimed to identify and compare baseline body composition and hand grip strength of orthopaedic surgery residents. The second aim was to iden

Obesity remains a serious relevant public health concern throughout the world despite related countermeasures being well understood (i.e. mainly physical activity and an adjusted diet). Among different nutritional approaches, there is a growing interest in ketogenic diets (KD) to manipulate body mass (BM) and to enhance fat mass loss. KD reduce the daily amount of carbohydrate intake drastically. This results in increased fatty acid utilisation, leading to an increase in blood ketone bodies (acetoacetate, 3-β-hydroxybutyrate and acetone) and therefore metabolic ketosis. For many years, nutriti

The Pregnancy Obesity Nutrition and Child Health study is a longitudinal study of reproductive health. Here we analyzed body composition of normal-weight and obese Swedish women by three methods during each trimester of pregnancy. Cross-sectional and longitudinal fat mass estimates using quantitative magnetic resonance (QMR) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) (Tanita MC-180MA-III) were compared with fat mass determined by air displacement plethysmography (ADP) in pregnancy weeks 8-12, 24-26, and 35-37 in normal-weight women (n = 122, BMI = 22.1 ± 1.6 kg/m2) and obese women (n = 29, BMI

OBJECTIVE: Changes in body composition are a common feature of Huntington's disease (HD) and are associated with disease progression. However, whether these changes in body composition are associated with degeneration of the striatum is unknown. This study aimed to explore the associations between body composition metrics and striatal brain volume in individuals with premanifest HD and healthy controls.
METHODS: Twenty-one individuals with premanifest HD and 22 healthy controls participated in this cross-sectional study. Body composition metrics were measured via dual-energy X-ray absorptiome

Monitoring whole body composition (fat mass and fat-free mass) in preterm infants may assist in optimizing nutrition and promoting growth and neurodevelopment in the neonatal intensive care unit. Currently, body composition assessment is not part of routine clinical evaluation of premature infants. Instead, weight and length are used to assess growth but are known to be poor predictors of adiposity shortly after birth. Although body composition methods, such as magnetic resonance imaging, stable-isotope dilution, and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, have been examined in infants, they involve

INTRODUCTION: There are few reports on body composition, particularly muscle mass, in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The purpose of this study was to measure body composition including muscle mass and estimated bone mass of patients with AIS using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and to clarify the relationship between the degree of scoliosis and body composition.
METHODS: The subjects were 210 girls (mean age 14.0 years, range 10-18 years) whose body composition was evaluated using BIA (Tanita MC-780). Body mass index (BMI), percent body fat (%BF), lean muscle mas

Overweight, obesity, and metabolic syndrome in paediatrics represent issues of increasing importance. To complete diagnostics and extend patient monitoring, body composition measurements can be used. Nowadays there are a number of methods that allow the esti-mation of the content of individual tissues. Their accuracy and replicability, contributing to the measurement's credibility, are the subject of numerous scientific publications. While choosing a method, one has to know its basic assumptions and be aware of the assets and weaknesses, as well as its cost. The mentioned aspects will be discu

With the increasing recognition of overweight, obesity, and metabolic diseases in paediatrics, there is a need to apply more precise diag-nostic methods to individualise the procedures and improve their monitoring. Advanced methods of evaluating body composition are a valuable addition to body weighing because they provide more precise data than screening methods such as anthropometry and bioe-lectrical impedance analysis (BIA). However, they require expensive equipment and highly trained staff. The availability of methods used in paediatrics is increasing. The article discusses the technical

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the body composition (BC) of patients with Huntington's disease (HD) could help to delay disease progression and improve treatment efficacy. The aim of this study was to assess BC parameters, including bone mineral density (BMD), and to find new biomarkers that can be early indicators for weight loss in patients with HD.
METHODS: Twenty-one age- and sex-matched patients with HD and 29 healthy controls (CT) were enrolled. For each patient, body weight (BW), height, and body mass index (BMI) were evaluated. BC and BMD were measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. S

A complex interplay exists between heart failure, metabolic status and body composition. The idiosyncrasies of these relationships are poorly understood, but they offer prognostic value and potential clinical utility. Current understanding of this relationship and known clinical value are discussed in this article.
