Understanding eating disorders in the Middle East: body dissatisfaction and westernization in Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

INTRODUCTION: Body dissatisfaction is one of the maintaining factors of eating disorders and a well-known risk factor for their development. It was assumed that body dissatisfaction did not afflict non-Western countries. However, body dissatisfaction is reported in non-Western countries, and to what extent westernization is associated with body dissatisfaction and subsequent eating disorders is unknown. The purpose of the present study is to examine the association between Western acculturation and body dissatisfaction in Saudi Arabia and Turkey, and to determine the measurement invariance of

Body dissatisfaction, stigma and eating disorders: a scoping study on the role of compassion focused therapy.

Despite Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) being the gold standard for treating eating disorders (ED), approximately 50% of patients do not see significant results. Increased body-related stigma in society, driven by a pursuit of thinness for peer acceptance, has led to substantial rises in body image dissatisfaction, which is closely linked with EDs like Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), and Binge Eating Disorder (BED). This issue needs addressing in treatment as societal pressures cause individuals to internalise stigma. Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), which emphasises a compas

The role of personality traits, sociocultural factors, and body dissatisfaction in anorexia readiness syndrome in women.

BACKGROUND: The mass media promote certain standards of physical attractiveness. The media coverage, in interaction with body dissatisfaction and personality traits, may intensify specified behaviors in women, that should help them to obtain an ideal body image, e.g., excessive concentration on body image, weight control, increase in physical activity. The intensification of these behaviors can develop anorexia readiness syndrome (ARS) in women. The paper presents a study on the role of the Five-Factor Model personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and i

Association between athletic participation and the risk of eating disorder and body dissatisfaction in college students.

OBJECTIVE: Given that females exhibit a greater prevalence of eating disorders, there is of yet no conclusive evidence whether participation in college athletics exacerbates eating disorders or body shape dissatisfaction. This study assessed how gender and participation in collegiate athletics are associated with increased risk for disordered eating attitudes and body shape concerns in college students. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional research design. A total of 302 students at a Southern US university fully completed the eating attitudes test and the body shape questionnaire durin

Effects of emotional acceptance and rumination on media-induced body dissatisfaction in anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Body dissatisfaction is an important risk and maintaining factor for eating disorders. The aim of the present study was to experimentally test the effects of two emotion regulation strategies - acceptance and rumination - on media-induced body dissatisfaction in eating disorders. METHOD: After watching pictures of thin models, women with anorexia nervosa (AN; n = 39) and bulimia nervosa (BN; n = 39) were encouraged to either use emotional acceptance or rumination to cope with their feelings. Body dissatisfaction and mood were repeatedly assessed. RESULTS: Acceptance significant

A preliminary investigation of the relationship between induced rumination and state body image dissatisfaction and anxiety.

The current study investigated the relationship between cognitive rumination and state body image distress using an experimental design. Specifically, the study examined whether participants induced to ruminate about an imagined negative body image event would report more body image dissatisfaction and anxiety compared to those induced to distract themselves. Ninety-nine undergraduate women completed two measures to assess depressive symptomology and baseline body image distress. All participants then silently read a body image scenario intended to evoke negative emotions. After reading the sc

The roles of ethnicity and culture in the development of eating disturbance and body dissatisfaction: a meta-analytic review.

This meta-analysis involved 35 studies examining eating disturbance and body dissatisfaction in white and non-white populations and the role of acculturation in the development of eating-related psychopathology. While the role of acculturation in predisposing non-whites to eating disorders remains to be determined, mean effect sizes indicate that whites report more eating disturbance than non-whites. Differences are greatest when studies compare black and white college samples on measures of subclinical eating pathology, like dietary restraint, ideal body shape, and body dissatisfaction. They

Sexual orientation and gender as factors in socioculturally acquired vulnerability to body dissatisfaction and eating disorders.

This study investigated the hypothesis that gay men and heterosexual women are dissatisfied with their bodies and vulnerable to eating disorders because of a shared emphasis on physical attractiveness and thinness that is based on a desire to attract and please men. Although men place priority on physical attractiveness in evaluating potential partners, women place greater emphasis on other factors, such as personality, status, power, and income. Therefore, lesbians and heterosexual men are less concerned with their own physical attractiveness and, consequently, less dissatisfied with their bo

Body dissatisfaction, ruminative thinking, food and alcohol disturbance, and alcohol use outcomes among college students.

Research shows that body dissatisfaction can contribute to risky alcohol use and negative alcohol-related consequences among college students. The present study examined if rumination and engagement in food and alcohol disturbance (FAD; i.e., disordered eating behaviors used to compensate for alcohol-related calories [FAD-calories] or enhance alcohol's effects [FAD-intoxication]) are potential mechanisms indirectly linking body dissatisfaction to alcohol use and related consequences in college students. Specifically, we tested whether higher body dissatisfaction relates to greater alcohol use/

Body dissatisfaction and dieting among Finnish adolescents: a 20-year population-based time-trend study.

Body image has an important role in the health and development of adolescents. Body dissatisfaction and dieting can become chronic and continue into adulthood. There is a lack of recent, comprehensive studies on ongoing trends on body dissatisfaction. This study assessed time-trend changes in self-reported body dissatisfaction and dieting among Finnish adolescents at four assessment points. Representative samples of adolescents (N = 6660) aged 13-16 years participated in school-based, cross-sectional studies in 1998 (N = 1458), 2008 (N = 2044), 2014 (N = 1809), and 2018 (N = 1349), respectivel

Social comparison and its relation to body dissatisfaction in bulimia nervosa: evidence from eye movements.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the role of social comparison for body dissatisfaction in bulimia nervosa (BN). Previous research suggested that exposure to media content idealizing thin body shape decreases body satisfaction, particularly in women with eating disorder symptoms. This might be due to the negative outcome of social comparisons with media models, and women with eating disorders might be particularly susceptible because they engage in upward social comparison more frequently than women without these symptoms. However, no study has yet explored both upward (i.e., toward more attractive oth

Body image dissatisfaction and emotional eating across age and weight status: a comparative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity in older adults is associated with significant medical, functional, and psychological consequences, including body image dissatisfaction and maladaptive eating behaviors such as emotional eating. Although these associations have been extensively studied in younger populations, limited evidence is available in older adults with obesity. This study aimed to examine differences in body dissatisfaction by age and weight status and its association with emotional eating in adults and older adults with obesity. METHODS: 108 participants were included and divided into four subgrou

Reciprocal longitudinal associations between symptoms of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, self-harm and suicidal ideation.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are severe psychiatric conditions associated with high mortality rates, particularly among young people. These disorders often co-occur with self-harm and suicidal ideation, yet the temporal dynamics between these variables remain poorly understood. AIMS: This study aims to elucidate the longitudinal associations between symptoms of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, self-harm and suicidal ideation using structural equation modelling. METHOD: Repeated measures of these phenotypes were used to construct a hypothetical model that includes cross-path analys

Disordered eating behaviors, body dissatisfaction and their determinants in Indian adolescents: A cross-sectional observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Although the prevalence of disordered eating is maximum in high-income countries, the most significant rise occurred in East Asia and South Asia over the last three decades. Body dissatisfaction and disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) are more common than full-blown eating disorders. The cognitive distortion leading to these manifestations mainly occurs during adolescence and early adulthood. In this study, we assess the burden of DEBs in a cohort of Indian adolescents and determine their correlation with body dissatisfaction, calorie intake, and clinicosocial determinants. METHODS:
