Effect of optimizing the use of endoscope on the efficiency of microdynamic bromhidrosis removal operation.

BACKGROUND: Bromhidrosis, also known as body odor, is a common disease in life, which often occurs in young adults. The histological basis of bromhidrosis is the hyperplasia of apocrine sweat glands. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of different methods of endoscopy in microdynamic axillary osmidrosis removal on curative effect, complications, and surgical efficiency. METHODS: A total of 149 patients with axillary osmidrosis were treated in our hospital from January 2020 to December 2021. They were treated with endoscopic assistance in the whole process of operation (Group A) and endoscope-

Earwigs (Labidura riparia) mimic rotting-flesh odor to deceive vertebrate predators.

Many insects repel predators with caustic chemicals, while insects mimicking odors of wastes/dead insects to fool predators have not been documented. We found that the shore earwig, Labidura riparia (Dermaptera: Labiduridae) when bitten by anole lizards, Anolis carolinenesus, spits a rotting-flesh odor that deceives these insectivores into rejecting prey. Once a lizard attacked and rejected an earwig, the lizard did not attack another earwig during several weeks despite consuming other prey, indicating associative learning after one trial. The fetid odor was found in the head-prothorax contain

Mechanisms of chloride uptake in frog olfactory receptor neurons.

Odorant stimulation of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) leads to the activation of a Ca(2+) permeable cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channel followed by opening of an excitatory Ca(2+)-activated Cl(-) channel, which carries about 70% of the odorant-induced receptor current. This requires ORNs to have a [Cl(-)](i) above the electrochemical equilibrium to render this anionic current excitatory. In mammalian ORNs, the Na(+)-K(+)-2Cl(-) co-transporter 1 (NKCC1) has been characterized as the principal mechanism by which these neurons actively accumulate Cl(-). To determine if NKCC activity is neede

Suction Pipette Technique: An Electrophysiological Tool to Study Olfactory Receptor-Dependent Signal Transduction.

The first step to perceive molecules in the air as odors is their detection by the olfactory receptors (ORs) present in the cilia of the olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) in the nasal cavity. The binding of the odorant molecule to the OR triggers a series of biochemical events that lead to the opening of ion channels, creating at first a generator potential that, if the latter reaches threshold, leads to action potential firing. New insights into olfactory transduction introduced new key players and highlighted the necessity to study OSN physiology in an OR-dependent fashion. The necessity of re

Predicting missed alerts in detection dogs.

Detection dogs are widely used in tasks ranging from explosives detection to medical diagnostics. Yet even well-trained dogs occasionally fail to indicate target odors. Such missed alerts can have severe operational consequences. Here we show that missed alerts are preceded by measurable changes in the dog's behavioral and physiological state. Using a controlled olfacto-treadmill system with precisely timed odor presentation, we analyzed movement dynamics and physiological signals during the seconds preceding each trial. A machine learning model trained on pre-odor movement patterns predicted

Crickets evade bats via olfaction beyond acoustic cues.

The evolutionary arms race between insectivorous bats and their insect prey is a classic paradigm of acoustic predation and evasion, with insects having evolved sophisticated auditory countermeasures. Both bats and insects also rely heavily on olfaction for key behaviors, such as social communication. Moreover, predator-derived odors are well established as risk cues in many other predator-prey systems. However, whether olfaction plays a role in the bat-insect arms race remains unknown. Here, we unveil a previously unknown olfactory dimension to this interaction. We demonstrated that the body

Occurrences of 2-methylisoborneol and geosmin -degrading bacteria in a eutrophic reservoir and the role of cell-bound versus dissolved fractions.

As taste-and-odor outbreaks are common in surface waters worldwide, extensive studies have focused on the identification of microorganisms involved in the production of 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin (GSM). However, fewer studies have tried to identify potential degraders in natural environments. Eagle Creek Reservoir, a temperate and eutrophic water body, experienced two major seasonal odorous outbreaks in 2013 with maximal concentrations of 99.1 (MIB) and 77.3 ng L-1 (GSM). Fractionation analyses of the odorous compounds showed that MIB was found more frequently in the dissolved fracti

Molecular identification of cDNA, immunolocalization, and expression of a putative odorant-binding protein from an Asian honey bee, Apis cerana cerana.

An odorant-binding protein cDNA (Acer-ASP2) was cloned and characterized from antennae of adult workers of an Asian honey bee, Apis cerana cerana F. (Hymenoptera: Apidae). The full-length open reading frame of Acer-ASP2 cDNA was 429 bp, encoding 142 amino acids. Protein signature analyses revealed that it contained six conserved cysteines with an N-terminal signal sequence of 19 amino acids. The deduced protein sequence shares high homology with Amel-ASP2 from the honey bee, Apis mellifera L., and low similarity with odorant-binding proteins from other species of insects. Individual humans are more attractive to certain mosquito species.

Humans are not equally attractive to mosquitoes, leaving some more vulnerable to mosquito-borne illnesses than others. Body odor differences likely allow mosquitoes to discriminate between humans. Using a uniport olfactometer, we measured the attraction of Aedes aegypti, Ae des albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes for each of our 119 participants. Ae. aegypti, but not other species tested, were slightly more attracted to male than female participants. Each of our three species ranked our participants differently, favoring a distinct subset of our cohort. For each species, mosquito

Optical recording of responses to odor in olfactory structures of the nervous system in the terrestrial mollusk Helix.

Electrophysiological methods and optical methods based on the use of potential-sensitive dyes were used to record stable rhythmic oscillations of local potentials in the olfactory structure (procerebrum) of the pulmonate mollusk Helix: these oscillations were generally similar to those previously observed in slugs. Odor had the effect of transiently altering rhythmic oscillations to generate an individual pattern. This is the first study describing the recording of procerebrum potentials evoked by presentation of odor, with mapping of the areas of propagation of these potentials relative to th

Transgenic line for characterizing GABA-receptor expression to study the neural basis of olfaction in the yellow-fever mosquito.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is an important vector of diseases including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Olfaction is a critical modality for mosquitoes enabling them to locate hosts, sources of nectar, and sites for oviposition. GABA is an essential neurotransmitter in olfactory processing in the insect brain, including the primary olfactory center, the antennal lobe. Previous work with Ae. aegypti has suggested that antennal lobe inhibition via GABA may be involved in the processing of odors. However, little is known about GABA receptor expression in the mosquito brain, or how th

Assessment of Olfactory Function in MAPT-Associated Neurodegenerative Disease Reveals Odor-Identification Irreproducibility as a Non-Disease-Specific, General Characteristic of Olfactory Dysfunction.

Olfactory dysfunction is associated with normal aging, multiple neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease, Lewy body disease and Alzheimer's disease, and other diseases such as diabetes, sleep apnea and the autoimmune disease myasthenia gravis. The wide spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders associated with olfactory dysfunction suggests different, potentially overlapping, underlying pathophysiologies. Studying olfactory dysfunction in presymptomatic carriers of mutations known to cause familial parkinsonism provides unique opportunities to understand the role of genetic fact

Living with an imagined odor: first case report of olfactory reference syndrome in East Africa treated using a multimodal approach.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory reference syndrome is a psychiatric disorder characterized by a persistent and distressing preoccupation with emitting a foul body odor despite the absence of objective evidence. It is classified under "other specified obsessive-compulsive and related disorders" in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision. Although olfactory reference syndrome has been described in several regions globally, there are no published case reports from East Africa. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old Ethiopian man was referred from the otorhinolaryn

Textile sorption and release of odorous volatile organic compounds from a synthetic sweat solution.

Body odorants typically transfer to clothing fabrics by way of liquid sweat, yet investigations of odor retention in textiles often neglect this route of exposure in their test procedures. This paper describes a novel method for transferring selected odorous volatile organic compounds to six types of textile fibers in yarn bundle form by an aqueous sweat solution. Headspace volatile organic compounds varying by chemical class (ketones, aldehydes, carboxylic acids) were monitored at discrete time intervals (30 min, 3 h, 24 h) using proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry. Lower intensities o

Olfactory Capacity and Obesity in Chilean Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a global issue, influenced by energy-dense foods and powerful cues that affect brain areas regulating food intake. The olfactory system, linked to food preferences and consumption, is inversely related to body mass index. However, no studies have assessed the possible effect of eating behavior traits on the relationship between olfactory capacity and obesity. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine whether olfactory capacity, eating behavior traits, and body mass index are associated with obesity in adolescents. METHODS: An analysis of 204 Chilean ad

Wearable Sensors for Assessing the Role of Olfactory Training on the Autonomic Response to Olfactory Stimulation.

Wearable sensors are nowadays largely employed to assess physiological signals derived from the human body without representing a burden in terms of obtrusiveness. One of the most intriguing fields of application for such systems include the assessment of physiological responses to sensory stimuli. In this specific regard, it is not yet known which are the main psychophysiological drivers of olfactory-related pleasantness, as the current literature has demonstrated the relationship between odor familiarity and odor valence, but has not clarified the consequentiality between the two domains. The larval Drosophila mushroom body balances lateralized sensing and interhemispheric integration.

All animals with bilateral symmetry must integrate the sensory input from the left and right sides of their bodies to make coherent perceptual decisions. In the Drosophila larva, olfactory receptor neurons project largely ipsilaterally, providing a tractable system for asking where and how interhemispheric integration arises downstream. We combined volumetric calcium imaging with unilateral sensory perturbations, connectomic analysis, and optogenetic manipulations to trace the propagation of left-right olfactory information across successive layers of the olfactory system. This approach implic
