Effects of increasing air temperature on skin and respiration heat loss from dairy cows at different relative humidity and air velocity levels.

The focus of this study was to identify the effects of increasing ambient temperature (T) at different relative humidity (RH) and air velocity (AV) levels on heat loss from the skin surface and through respiration of dairy cows. Twenty Holstein dairy cows with an average parity of 2.0 ± 0.7 and body weight of 687 ± 46 kg participated in the study. Two climate-controlled respiration chambers were used. The experimental indoor climate was programmed to follow a diurnal pattern with ambient T at night being 9°C lower than during the day. Night ambient T was gradually increased from 7 to 21°C and

Single neuron studies and their usefulness in understanding thermoregulation.

Electrophysiological studies of hypothalamic thermosensitive neurons have been conducted for the past 25 years. These studies have greatly improved our understanding of the neural control of thermoregulation. They have added a sense of reality to black-box models, and they have fostered the development of neuronal models having a major effect on the predictions and conclusions made in thermoregulatory studies. Neuron studies not only provide an understanding of the synaptic and cellular basis of thermosensitivity, but they also permit morphological identifications of neurons and their pathways

Effects of palm cooling on thermoregulatory-related and subjective indicators during exercise in a hot environment.

Palm cooling is a simple and easily implemented intervention strategy during exercise. We aimed to examine the effects of bilateral palm cooling before and during exercise on thermoregulatory-related and subjective indicators in a hot environment. Ten active men (age: 21 ± 1 years; height 172.2 ± 5.7 cm; weight 67.4 ± 7.2 kg) underwent three experimental trials at the same time of the day, consisting of palm cooling with 12°C (ICE12°C), palm cooling with 0°C (ICE0°C) where vasoconstriction is supposed to occur, and control (CON) trials. After 30 min rest at ambient temperature, participants pe

Cooling down is as important as warming up for a large-bodied tropical reptile.

An ectotherm's performance and physiological function are strongly tied to environmental temperature, and many ectotherms thermoregulate behaviourally to reach optimum body temperatures. Tropical ectotherms are already living in environments matching their thermal tolerance range and may be expected to conform to environmental temperatures. We tracked the body temperatures (Tb) of 163 estuarine crocodiles across 13 years and compared Tb of 39 crocodiles to water temperature gathered using fish-borne sensors (Tw) across 3 years (2015-2018). While Tb largely conformed closely to Tw, we found int

Body temperature null distributions in reptiles with nonzero heat capacity: seasonal thermoregulation in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

Regulation of body temperature may increase fitness of animals by ensuring that biochemical and physiological processes proceed at an optimal rate. The validity of current methods of testing whether or not thermoregulation in reptiles occurs is often limited to very small species that have near zero heat capacity. The aim of this study was to develop a method that allows estimation of body temperature null distributions of large reptiles and to investigate seasonal thermoregulation in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). Continuous body temperature records of wild alligators we

Field evidence of relative cooling under warm conditions in grouped caterpillars.

Gregarious behavior in insects provides several ecological benefits, including thermoregulation. There is evidence that aggregation in caterpillars may enhance heat gain under cool conditions, but whether it also facilitates cooling under warm conditions remains unknown. We tested under field conditions whether the relationship between body-air temperature differential and air temperature differed between solitary and grouped caterpillars of the gregarious butterfly Battus polydamas archidamas. Grouped caterpillars, but not solitary caterpillars, showed an overall association between body-air

Individual differences in the development of thermoregulation among littermates of the domestic rabbit.

The tight regulation of body temperature is essential for the maintenance of homeostasis in homeothermic endotherms. However, newborn altricial mammals are limited in their ability to maintain body temperature independently because they usually lack an insulating layer of fur, they have a relatively large body surface to volume ratio, and they have immature vasomotor control. Thus, altricial young are generally considered ectothermic poikilotherms at birth, but rapidly develop homeothermic endothermy. However, in polytocous species it is not known whether there are differences among littermate

Flight performance and wing morphology in the bat Carollia perspicillata: biophysical models and energetics.

Studies on functional performance are important to understand the processes responsible for the evolution of diversity. Morphological trait variation within species influences the energetic cost of locomotion and impacts life history traits, with ecological and evolutionary consequences. This study examined wing morphology correlates of flight performance measured by energetic expenditure in the Seba's short-tailed bat, Carollia perspicillata. In the flight experiments, nature caught bats (59 females, 57 males) were allowed to fly for 3 min in a room. After each flight, thermographic images we

A heterothermic spectrum in hummingbirds.

Many endotherms use torpor, saving energy by a controlled reduction of their body temperature and metabolic rate. Some species (e.g. arctic ground squirrels, hummingbirds) enter deep torpor, dropping their body temperature by 23-37°C, while others can only enter shallow torpor (e.g. pigeons, 3-10°C reduction). However, deep torpor in mammals can increase predation risk (unless animals are in burrows or caves), inhibit immune function and result in sleep deprivation, so even for species that can enter deep torpor, facultative shallow torpor might help balance energy savings with these potential

Octopamine drives honeybee thermogenesis.

In times of environmental change species have two options to survive: they either relocate to a new habitat or they adapt to the altered environment. Adaptation requires physiological plasticity and provides a selection benefit. In this regard, the Western honeybee (Apis mellifera) protrudes with its thermoregulatory capabilities, which enables a nearly worldwide distribution. Especially in the cold, shivering thermogenesis enables foraging as well as proper brood development and thus survival. In this study, we present octopamine signaling as a neurochemical prerequisite for honeybee thermoge

Bergmann's rule is a "just-so" story of human body size.

Carl Bergmann was an astute naturalist and physiologist. His ideas about animal size and shape were important advances in the pre-Darwinian nineteenth century. Bergmann's rule claims that that in cold climates, large body mass increases the ratio of volume-to-surface area and provides for maximum metabolic heat retention in mammals and birds. Conversely, in warmer temperatures, smaller body mass increases surface area relative to volume and allows for greater heat loss. For humans, we now know that body size and shape are regulated more by social-economic-political-emotional (SEPE) factors as

Accidental hypothermia and impaired temperature homoeostasis in the elderly.

A longitudinal study of the age-related decline in thermoregulatory capacity was made in 47 elderly people to try to identify those at risk from spontaneous hypothermia. During the winters of 1971-2 and 1975-6 environmental and body temperature profiles were obtained in the home, and thermoregulatory function was investigated by cooling and warming tests. Environmental temperature and socioeconomic conditions had not changed but the body core-shell temperature gradients were smaller in 1976, indicating progressive thermoregulatory impairment. People at risk of developing hypothermia also seem

A Multimodal Assay to Infer Body Temperature Set-Point Shifts in Freely Moving Mice.

Homeothermic animals maintain a stable core body temperature (Tc) at a set-point around 37 °C. Thermoregulatory homeostasis maintains Tc around the set-point, even when ambient temperature varies considerably. While most studies of thermoregulation focus on laboratory animals' systemic responses to changes in ambient temperature, little is known about how the central nervous system controls the Tc set-point. To facilitate such research, we developed an experimental strategy to infer Tc set-point shifts in freely moving mice. The core assay is based on the relationship between Tc and preferred

Consequences of heterothermy during development on the physiology and growth of Antarctic storm-petrel chicks.

The ability to endure a wide range of body temperatures, called heterothermy, offers many species worldwide the possibility to survive times of malnourishment by lowering metabolic rate and body temperature. During development, facultative hypothermia and therefore lowered body temperatures might have disadvantages. Our study aimed at identifying potential trade-offs between the use of facultative hypothermia and investment into growth, immunity, and nutritional physiology in chicks of an Antarctic seabird, the Wilson's Storm-petrel (Oceanites oceanicus). To answer these questions, we used the

Thermal and water relations of desert beetles.

The physical problems that living organisms have to contend with in hot deserts are primarily extremes of temperature, low humidity, shortage or absence of free water, and the environmental factors that accentuate these--such as strong winds, sand-storms, lack of shade, rocky and impenetrable soils. Climatic factors are particularly important to smaller animals such as arthropods on account of their relatively enormous surface to volume ratios. Nevertheless, beetles (especially Tenebrionidae and, to a lesser extent, Chrysomelidae) are among the most successful animals of the desert, and are of
