Acromioclavicular joint subluxation is rare in rheumatoid arthritis. A radiographic 15-year study.

AIM: To conduct a radiographic assessment of the occurrence of the acromioclavicular joint subluxation in patients with long-standing rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: A cohort of 74 patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis was followed prospectively for 15 years. At the 15-year visit, plain radiographs of both shoulders (n = 148) were obtained using a standard method. Acromioclavicular joint destruction was evaluated using Larsen's method, and radiographic subluxation was measured on the radiographs using two different methods. In one of these methods (method A), the distance between the

Factors affecting bone mineral mass loss after lower-limb fractures in a pediatric population.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of the durations of cast immobilization and non-weight-bearing periods, and decreases in vigorous physical activity (VPA) on bone mineral parameters in a pediatric population treated for a lower-limb fracture. METHODS: Fifty children and teenagers who had undergone a cast-mediated immobilization for a leg or ankle fracture were prospectively recruited. The durations of cast immobilization and non-weight-bearing periods were recorded for each participant. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans were performed at the time of fractur

Clinical characteristics of patients with bone marrow edema syndrome, transient osteoporosis or migratory osteoporosis: a scoping review.

Bone marrow edema syndrome (BMES), transient osteoporosis of the hip (TOH), and regional migratory osteoporosis (RMO), along with numerous variants of these terms, are used inconsistently to describe spontaneous pain, typically in the lower extremity, accompanied by bone marrow edema on MRI and/or bone demineralization. In the present review, we aimed to determine whether these designations represent distinct conditions or varying manifestations of a shared pathology. We employed a scoping review methodology, following a preregistered protocol, utilizing a comprehensive systematic search of el

Osteocyte-directed bone demineralization along canaliculi.

The mammalian skeleton stores calcium and phosphate ions in bone matrix. Osteocytes in osteocyte lacunae extend numerous dendrites into canaliculi less than a micron in diameter and which are distributed throughout bone matrix. Although osteoclasts are the primary bone-resorbing cells, osteocytes also reportedly dissolve hydroxyapatite at peri-lacunar bone matrix. However, robust three-dimensional evidence for peri-canalicular bone mineral dissolution has been lacking. Here we applied a previously reported Talbot-defocus multiscan tomography method for synchrotron X-ray microscopy and analyzed

Demineralization after balloon kyphoplasty with calcium phosphate cement: a histological evaluation in ten patients.

PURPOSE: Balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) with calcium phosphate cement (CPC) is increasingly being used for spinal surgery in younger patients. In routinely performed follow-up CT scans we observed considerable areas of demineralization in CPC processed vertebrae in several patients. To rule out infections or inflammations histological examinations were planned for these patients. METHODS: Ten patients (23-54 years; six men) with significant demineralization areas in CT scans after CPC balloon kyphoplasty were selected. Punch biopsies from these areas were taken in local anesthesia using a biopsy n

Bone demineralization induced by cementless alumina-coated femoral stems.

The biologic compatibility of ceramic materials has been widely demonstrated, and alumina (Al2O3) has been used extensively in clinical applications for nearly 20 years. The authors examined the behavior of bone tissue adjacent to the alumina coating in eight cementless hip prosthetic stems that appeared radiologically stable and were explanted because of pain. Histologic evaluation demonstrated the presence of a consistent layer of decalcified bone tissue in continuity with and parallel to the prosthetic interface. Based on laboratory findings, the authors attribute this demineralization phen

[Gingival hypertrophy in I-cell disease (mucolipidosis II). A report of 2 nonfamilial cases. II].

Two nonconsanguineous patients affected by I-cell disease (mucolipidosis II) are reported. I-cell disease, an oligosaccharidosis, is characterized by severe psychomotor retardation, marked shortness of stature, coarse facies, gingival enlargement, generalized bone demineralization, periosteal cloaking of long bones visible in early infancy, a rapid deteriorating course, and death from heart failure or bronchopneumonia, usually by the age of 5 years. This disorder is the result of a deficiency of glycoprotein N-acetylglucosaminylphosphotransferase activity, necessary for proper intracellular pr

TREATMENT OF UNICAMERAL BONE CYSTS IN CHILDREN: A COMPARATIVE STUDY.

Unicameral bone cysts (UBC) are benign bone tumor-like lesions. Mostly they are located in the metaphyseal-diaphyseal region of long bones in children and adolescents. The etiology of UBC is still unclear. There is no consensus about the protocol of UBC treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of three different techniques for the treatment of UBC. This study included 129 pediatric patients with UBC treated at University Children's Hospital in Belgrade during the 8-year period. The mean follow up was 7.14 years. The following parameters were observed: gender, age, sit

Space flight rehabilitation.

The weightless environment of space imposes specific physiologic adaptations on healthy astronauts. On return to Earth, these adaptations manifest as physical impairments that necessitate a period of rehabilitation. Physiologic changes result from unloading in microgravity and highly correlate with those seen in relatively immobile terrestrial patient populations such as spinal cord, geriatric, or deconditioned bed-rest patients. Major postflight impairments requiring rehabilitation intervention include orthostatic intolerance, bone demineralization, muscular atrophy, and neurovestibular sympt

Radiological and optical coherence tomography aspects in external root resorption.

Pathological external root resorption is a process by which the hard tooth substance is lost because of action of different local irritative or systemic factors. Six forms of external root resorption are described: surface external root resorption, inflammatory external root resorption, replacement external root resorption, invasive external cervical root resorption, ankylosis and transient apical breakdown. The objective of the study was to establish the prevalence of the pathological root resorption in a retrospective radiological study, to highlight radiological aspects of external root res

Vertebral endplate signal changes (Modic change): a systematic literature review of prevalence and association with non-specific low back pain.

The prevalence of "vertebral endplate signal changes" (VESC) and its association with low back pain (LBP) varies greatly between studies. This wide range in reported prevalence rates and associations with LBP could be explained by differences in the definitions of VESC, LBP, or study sample. The objectives of this systematic critical review were to investigate the current literature in relation to the prevalence of VESC (including Modic changes) and the association with non-specific low back pain (LBP). The MEDLINE, EMBASE, and SveMED databases were searched for the period 1984 to November 200

Atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation in a pediatric patient with osteopetrosis following minor trauma: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Osteopetrosis is a rare skeletal dysplasia characterized by impaired osteoclastic bone resorption, leading to dense but brittle bones prone to pathological fractures. Although fractures in the appendicular skeleton are well described, cervical spine involvement, particularly atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation is rare in children. OBSERVATIONS: The authors present the case of a 7-year-old boy with autosomal recessive osteopetrosis who developed torticollis and restricted neck motion following minor trauma. Imaging revealed rotatory C1-2 subluxation with bilateral C2 pars interarticu

Oral Manifestations of Chronic Kidney Disease and Renal Secondary Hyperparathyroidism: A Comparative Review.

Recent epidemiological studies have demonstrated that significant associations exist between oral disease and diseases involving non-oral tissues. Occasionally, the roles may be reversed and the oral cavity can be severely affected by systemic disease originating in another part of the body. Renal secondary hyperparathyroidism is a common endocrinopathy that occurs as a consequence of chronic azotemic kidney disease. Renal osteodystrophy, the most dramatic clinical consequence of renal secondary hyperparathyroidism is uncommon, but can result in demineralization of maxillofacial bones, looseni

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate Combined With Demineralized Bone Matrix With Open Curettage vs Mini-Open Trocar-Assisted Injection for Unicameral Bone Cysts: A Retrospective Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Unicameral bone cysts (UBCs) are common benign pediatric bone lesions prone to pathologic fracture and recurrence. Bone marrow aspirate concentrate combined with demineralized bone matrix (BMAC/DBM) is a biologically active treatment strategy. However, no study has directly compared open curettage combined with BMAC/DBM injection against mini-open trocar-assisted injection (MOTAI) of BMAC/DBM in a long-term cohort. METHODS: A retrospective comparative study was conducted at a single tertiary referral center. Thirty-five patients treated for UBCs between 2006 and 2019 were included

Role of cartilage-derived anti-angiogenic factor, chondromodulin-I, during endochondral bone formation.

OBJECTIVE: Cartilage is a typical avasclar tissue that exhibits powerful resistance to angiogenesis or vascular invasion. We previously identified a cartilage-specific 25 kDa glycosylated protein, chondromodulin-I (ChM-I), as anti-angiogenic factor. Taking advantage of ectopic bone formation and xenograft tumour model by human chondrosarcoma cell line OUMS-27, we examined how ChM-I is involved in switching of angiogenesis in cartilage. DESIGN: Gene expression pattern of ChM-I was examined in 4-week-old mice and mouse embryos by northern blot analysis and in situ hybridization. To evaluate the

Factors affecting bone demineralization and blood lead levels of postmenopausal women--a population-based study from Germany.

We investigated the influence of various lifestyle factors on blood lead levels in postmenopausal women from the general population of Germany. Particular consideration was given to those factors which are suspected to be related to bone demineralization. The study population consisted of 424 women, aged 45 to 80 years, who were examined in a substudy of the National Health and Nutrition Survey called VERA (Verbundstudie Ernährungserhebung, und Risikofaktorenanalyse) from 1987 to 1988. Mean blood lead level was 61.4 micrograms/liter (SD, 27.3). In multiple linear regression analysis alcohol co
