[Peripheral facial paresis as a symptom of Borrelia burgdorferi infection].

Infection with the tick-borne Borrelia burgdorferi can lead to a variety of neurologic symptoms, the most frequent being a radicular pain syndrome due to meningitis. General symptoms such as asthenia or headache are also frequent, however, and serious neurologic complications such as dementia or spastic paresis may occur. At an early stage, Borrelia infections can be easily treated with antibiotics, which makes it important to recognize the symptoms and make the correct diagnosis. A common feature of borreliosis is facial palsy, and in the article is described the case of a 14 year-old boy wit

Tick-borne Borrelia infection in patients with Bell's palsy.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was applied to serum samples of 94 patients diagnosed as having Bell's palsy: they were studied throughout two consecutive years in an attempt to establish serologic evidence of a tick-borne spirochetal infection. A strain of Borrelia spirochetes, isolated from Swedish Ixodes ricinus ticks, was used as an antigen, and separate estimations of spirochetal IgG and IgM antibodies were made; serum samples with titers above the 95th-percentile level of 120 healthy individuals were considered positive. Thirteen percent of the patients' serum samples were IgG-posit

Unusual manifestations of nervous system Borrelia burgdorferi infection.

Borrelia burgdorferi infection may show disease manifestations in different organ systems, including the skin, heart, central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and joints. We report two hitherto unknown (to our knowledge) disease manifestations, an arteritis in the central nervous system, and a neuromyopathy of 11 years' duration. Diagnoses were made by demonstrating specific antibodies against B burgdorferi in the cerebrospinal fluid, and elevated specific antibody index. Both patients responded well to treatment, and intrathecal immunologic activity could not be demonstrated after t

Chronic progressive neurological involvement in Borrelia burgdorferi infection.

Five patients with chronic meningitis were hospitalized several times for progressive neurological symptoms. The clinical manifestations included cranial neuritis, radiculoneuritis, myelitis and encephalitis. In two cases cerebral infarction occurred. The course was commonly characterized by a tendency to deteriorate. From the clinical point of view, it was repeatedly difficult to exclude multiple sclerosis or tuberculous meningitis. Finally, specific antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi were detected by indirect immunofluorescence assay. The diagnosis of a borreliosis was not considered in

Closely-related Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu stricto) strains exhibit similar fitness in single infections and asymmetric competition in multiple infections.

BACKGROUND: Wild hosts are commonly co-infected with complex, genetically diverse, pathogen communities. Competition is expected between genetically or ecologically similar pathogen strains which may influence patterns of coexistence. However, there is little data on how specific strains of these diverse pathogen species interact within the host and how this impacts pathogen persistence in nature. Ticks are the most common disease vector in temperate regions with Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, being the most common vector-borne pathogen in North America. Investigations on the mode and dynamics of transmission and infectivity of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto and Borrelia afzelii in Ixodes ricinus ticks.

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (sl), the agent of Lyme disease, is transmitted to the host during the blood meal of Ixodes ticks. In most unfed ticks, spirochetes are present in the midgut and migrate during blood feeding to the salivary glands, from which they are transmitted to the host via saliva. In the present study, the efficiency of Ixodes ricinus ticks to transmit B. afzelii and B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (ss) and their infectivity for mice were examined in relation to the duration of the blood meal. In addition, we investigated whether these two Borrelia species can penetrate intac

OspA vaccination of mice with established Borrelia burgdorferi infection alters disease but not infection.

C3H mice were actively immunized with outer surface protein A (OspA) at different intervals after infection with Borrelia burgdorferi to determine the effect of postexposure vaccination on the course of murine Lyme borreliosis. Mice were vaccinated with an OspA-glutathione transferase fusion protein or glutathione transferase (control) in complete Freund's adjuvant; vaccination was followed by two weekly booster injections in incomplete adjuvant. Two weeks after the final booster injection, organs were cultured for B. burgdorferi (blood, spleen, skin, and bladder) and examined for histopatholo

Increasing the recruitment of neutrophils to the site of infection dramatically attenuates Borrelia burgdorferi infectivity.

Borrelia burgdorferi infection causes an initial skin lesion called erythema migrans (EM) in human Lyme disease and in models of monkey and rabbit borreliosis. EM results from the inflammatory response triggered by spirochete replication and likely develops to contain the initial infection but allows bacterial dissemination to occur. The essential lack of neutrophil involvement in EM histopathology prompted us to examine the consequence of increasing their recruitment in the inflammatory response to the Lyme disease agent. B. burgdorferi was modified genetically to constitutively express and s

[Significance of circulating immune complexes (CIC) in the diagnosis of infections with Borrelia burgdorferi].

INTRODUCTION: The infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi initiates a number of reactions in the human immunological system and particular behaviors of the infectious factor. The aim of work was to analyze the level of circulating immune complexes (CIC) due to infection with Borrelia burgdorferi in persons professionally exposed to tick bites. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The group of tested consisted of 275 persons, who are professionally exposed to tick bites, including 171 foresters and 104agriculturists. The controlled group consisted of 45 people, living permanently ortemporarily in Biata Podl

The important and diverse roles of antibodies in the host response to Borrelia infections.

Antibodies are of critical importance in the host response to tick-borne Borrelia species that cause relapsing fever and Lyme disease. Recent studies on the role of various B cell subsets in the host response to Borrelia, complement-independent, bactericidal antibodies, and diagnostics led to this review that focuses on the array of functions that antibodies to Borrelia can perform.

Increased prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi infections in Bernese Mountain Dogs: a possible breed predisposition.

BACKGROUND: Glomerulonephritis in dogs has been associated with B. burgdorferi infections. In Bernese Mountain Dogs with glomerulonephritis antibodies against B. burgdorferi have been found in most dogs, raising the question if the breed is predisposed to infections with B. burgdorferi. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of antibodies against B. burgdorferi sensu lato in a well defined population of Bernese Mountain Dogs and to compare this prevalence with data from dogs of other breeds. RESULTS: 160 Bernese Mountain Dogs and 62 control dogs (large breed dogs with long hair

Occurrence of multiple infections with different Borrelia burgdorferi genospecies in Danish Ixodes ricinus nymphs.

The pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi causes Lyme Borreliosis in human and animals world-wide. In Europe the pathogen is transmitted to the host by the vector Ixodes ricinus. The nymph is the primary instar for transmission to humans. We here study the infection rate of five Borrelia genospecies: B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. afzelii, B. garinii, B. valaisiana, B. lusitaniae in nymphs, by IFA and PCR. 600 nymphs were collected in North Zealand of Denmark. Each nymph was first analysed by IFA. If positive for spirochaetal infection, the genospecies was determined by PCR. The infection rate of B.

Polymerase chain reaction in diagnosis of Borrelia burgdorferi infections and studies on taxonomic classification.

Lyme borreliosis caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi is now the most common vectorborne disease in North America, Europe and Asia. It is a multisystemic infection which may cause skin, neurological, cardiac or rheumatologic disorders. The aims of the present thesis were: (i) to develop a PCR assay for direct detection of B. burgdorferi DNA and to evaluate the diagnostic utility of PCR in clinical specimens from patients with Lyme borreliosis and (ii) to study the taxonomic classification of B. burgdorferi isolates and its implications for epidemiology and clinical presentation. Routine diagnosis of Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato) infections using a real-time PCR assay.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a one-tube fluorogenic real-time PCR assay for routine detection of Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato) DNA in various clinical specimens. METHODS: A fragment of the flagellin gene sequence was amplified with the TaqMan chemistry using primers and a probe common to Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, Borrelia afzelii, Borrelia garinii and Borrelia valaisiana. A recombinant plasmid containing the chromosomal gene coding for the flagellin protein was used as standard. RESULTS: The specificity of the assay was documented with 48 different clinically relevant Borrelia burgd

[Borrelia infections of the skin--progress of knowledge since the discovery of Lyme disease].

The description of Lyme disease in 1976 and the detection of its causative agent, the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi (B. burgdorferi), in 1982 led to an increase in our knowledge of the course of B. burgdorferi infection and its clinical manifestations. The classic tick-borne dermatoses erythema chronicum migrans (ECM), lymphadenosis benigna cutis (LABC) and acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans (ACA) were proven by isolation of the spirochete from skin lesions to be caused by B. burgdorferi infection. In early disease (less than 1 year) ECM and LABC can develop locally at the site of infection

Neonatal Borrelia infections (relapsing fever): report of 5 cases and review of the literature.

Tick borne relapsing fever is an endemic disease in Sengerema district, Mwanza region, Tanzania, East Africa. Five cases of neonatal relapsing fever occurring in this endemic area are described. Two neonates showed signs of septicaemia, clumping of spirochetes (Borrelia index is uncountable) in the thick blood smear and they died the day of admission. Two neonates showed severe spirochetaemia (Borrelia index: 3). The neonate treated with low dose penicillin died, the other neonate, treated with erythromycin, survived. One neonate had only a mild spirochetaemia (Borrelia index is 0.5) and respo

Following a tick bite: double infections by tick-borne encephalitis virus and the spirochete Borrelia and other potential multiple infections.

In Central Europe and large parts of Asia, tick-borne-encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis caused by the spirochetal bacterium of the genus Borrelia are among the most common diseases transmitted by the bite of a tick. When in regions with overlapping TBE virus and Borrelia endemicity, a tick bite causes the victim to become ill, it is important that appropriate serological and other laboratory investigations form part of the differential diagnosis. Account must always be taken of the fact that a tick bite may be followed by a double infection with the TBE virus and Borrelia. For this reaso
