Human papillomavirus prevalence in male and female university students in Gaborone, Botswana.

In 2015, Botswana introduced the quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine as a two-dose schedule in girls aged 9–13 years. We sought to establish a baseline HPV prevalence in unvaccinated young adults in Botswana. HIV-uninfected men and women aged 18–22 years were recruited from the University of Botswana in Gaborone during October 2019–February 2021. Demographic and behavioural characteristics were self-reported during structured interviews. Self-collected vaginal and penile swabs were tested for 28 HPV types using Seegene Anyplex II HPV28. We compared any HPV type, quadrivalent vaccin

Ophthalmomyiasis in a preterm neonate resulting in blindness: A case report from Botswana.

Myiasis is an infestation of human tissue by insect larvae. While rare, healthcare-associated myiasis has been reported from immobilized patients in resource-limited healthcare facilities in warm climates without adequate vector control measures. We describe a case of Ophthalmomyiasis in a hospitalized neonate in Botswana that resulted in vision loss. The neonate, who was initially hospitalized due to the complications of prematurity, received phototherapy for jaundice, and to avoid phototherapy-related retinopathy, the neonate's eyes were covered using cotton gauze and adhesive tapes that pot

Management of Head and Neck Cancers With or Without Comorbid HIV Infection in Botswana.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the fifth most common malignancy in sub-Saharan Africa, a region with hyperendemic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infection. HIV patients have higher rates of HNC, yet the effect of HIV-infection on oncologic outcomes and treatment toxicity is poorly characterized. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational cohort study. METHODS: HNC patients attending a government-funded oncology clinic in Botswana were prospectively enrolled in an observational cohort registry from 2015 to 2019. Clinical characteristics were analyzed via Cox proportiona

Cross-sectional prevalence of Fasciola gigantica infections in beef cattle in Botswana.

A cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the prevalence and distribution of Fasciola gigantica infections in communally grazed and ranch-grazed beef cattle through coprological examination. A total of 8646 cattle (4618 adults, 2843 weaners and 1185 calves) faecal samples were collected during the 24 months of study. Results from this study indicated that only 64 (0.74%; 95% CI 0.57, 0.94%) of the samples were positive for F. gigantica eggs. The positive samples were detected in one (Central) of the six study districts and was restricted to the Tuli Block (commercial) farms in Macha

Analysis of Viral Diversity in Relation to the Recency of HIV-1C Infection in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional, biomarker methods to determine HIV infection recency present a promising and cost-effective alternative to the repeated testing of uninfected individuals. We evaluate a viral-based assay that uses a measure of pairwise distances (PwD) to identify HIV infection recency, and compare its performance with two serologic incidence assays, BED and LAg. In addition, we assess whether combination BED plus PwD or LAg plus PwD screening can improve predictive accuracy by reducing the likelihood of a false-recent result. METHODS: The data comes from 854 time-points and 42 par

Oncogenic viruses associated with vulva cancer in HIV-1 patients in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Oncoviruses such as HPV, KSHV, and EBV have been reported in patients with HIV infection and AIDS. How oncovirus-associated cancers rise in AIDS patients has not been fully established. The purpose of our study was to identify the viral agents in vulvar cancer and to assess their contribution to pathogenesis. METHOD: We retrospectively identified a total of 13 vulva tissue samples from HIV-1 positive and 9 vulvar samples from HIV-1 negative patients from the Botswana National Health Laboratory in Gaborone, Botswana, a Southern African country with a high incidence of HIV. We utili

HIV as a risk factor for cardiac disease in Botswana: a cross-sectional study.

The primary objective of this study was to assess how HIV has influenced the spectrum of heart diseases in Botswana and to examine the HIV prevalence among patients with cardiomegaly. The secondary objective was to evaluate the value of the cardiothoracic (CT) ratio on chest radiography (CXR) as a screening tool for cardiac disease. In total, 179 patients (age 14-97 years) with cardiomegaly (all CT ratios >0.53 on CXR) and known HIV status were referred to Botswana's sole hospital-based echocardiographic centre. Clinical examination and echocardiography were performed. Cardiomyopathy (36.9%),

Epidemic transmission of intestinal schistosomiasis in the seasonal part of the Okavango Delta, Botswana.

A well documented epidemic of human intestinal schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mansoni occurred at Maun in the seasonal part of the Okavango Delta, Botswana, building from very few cases in the 1950s and early 1960s to a peak prevalence of >80% in the 1980s. A retrospective analysis was performed on all available records of the prevalence of S. mansoni in the Maun area and the corresponding flow records of the Thamalakane River. These revealed a statistically significant correlation between prevalence and flow, but only when a lag period was introduced. The correlation was greatest with

Tobacco Control in Botswana: Effectiveness of Tax Changes in Reducing Tobacco Demand.

INTRODUCTION: Botswana has one of the highest adult tobacco-use rates in the WHO African Region. Despite measures and policies put in place to control tobacco consumption, there is still a widespread use of tobacco products in the country. This is because demand for tobacco and tobacco products is mostly affected by changes in tobacco prices and related taxes. This study therefore seeks to analyze the responsiveness of cigarette demand to price changes in Botswana. METHODS: This study analyses Botswana's conditional price elasticity of cigarette demand using Deaton's model. Deaton's method us

Whole-genome sequencing suggests recent transmission of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), continues to be a global health challenge. Transmission of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) poses a significant threat to effective TB prevention and care strategies. This study's aim was to investigate transmission patterns of DR-TB strains, identify factors associated with the spread and reconstruct their transmission dynamics over the study period in Botswana. METHODS: We analysed whole-genome sequencing data for 195 rifampicin-resistant Mtb isolates, which were isolated between 2016 and 2023. Potential recent transmission

Microbial quality of beef tripe (mogodu) sampled from butcheries around Gaborone, Botswana.

Beef tripe is a traditional delicacy in Botswana and many African communities. Despite its popularity and nutritional value, tripe remains highly perishable and prone to microbial contamination due to its origin in the bovine gastrointestinal system and potential exposure during processing. This study assessed the microbial quality of beef tripe samples collected from 18 butcheries in Gaborone, Botswana, including both microbial enumeration and species-level identification. The results revealed a high microbial load across all samples, with aerobic plate counts exceeding 5 log colony forming u
