A study of infant growth in relation to the type of feeding.

A total of 133 breast fed newborn babies, and 106 bottle fed babies, were selected and studied prospectively. Details taken of feeding practices have shown that by 5--7 wk of age bottle feeds had been introduced in about 50% of breast fed babies. Entirely breast fed babies received their first solid food later than breast-and-bottle fed or entirely bottle fed babies when such babies were in social class I, II or III, but in social class IV and V entirely breast fed babies were weaned at a similar age to those in the other two groups of babies. In the first 5--7 wk of life there was a significa

The Intervention Nurses Start Infants Growing on Healthy Trajectories (INSIGHT) responsive parenting intervention for firstborns impacts feeding of secondborns.

BACKGROUND: The Intervention Nurses Start Infant Growing on Healthy Trajectories (INSIGHT) study's responsive parenting (RP) intervention, initiated in early infancy, prevented the use of nonresponsive, controlling feeding practices and promoted use of structure-based feeding among first-time parents compared with controls. OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine the spillover effect of the RP intervention on maternal feeding practices with their secondborn (SB) infants enrolled in an observational-only study, SIBSIGHT, and to test the moderating effect of spacing of births. METHODS: SB infants of

Mothers' Perceptions of Child Vulnerability in Previous Preterm Infants.

This research examined whether the same predictive variables of mothers'perceptions of child vulnerability are present for extremely low birth-weight (ELBW) and very low birth-weight (VLBW) infants. Data were collected using 120 infants and 119 mothers. In ELBW infants, days until first bottle feeding, feeding problems, and feeding practices accounted for 69.9% of the variance (p < .001) at four months; feeding problems 49.9% (p < .001) at six months; and days until the first bottle feeding and feeding problems were 41.9% (p < .001) at twelve months. In the VLBW infants, feeding problems and l

Stability of Doxycycline in Feed and Water and Minimal Effective Doses in Tetracycline-Inducible Systems.

Despite the extensive use of doxycycline in tetracycline-inducible rodent models, little is known regarding its stability in feed or water or the most effective route or dose. We assessed the concentrations of doxycycline in reverse-osmosis-purified (RO; pH 6.0) and acidified RO (pH 2.6) water in untinted or green-tinted bottles. Doxycycline remained stable in all groups for 7 d and in acidified water in untinted bottles for 14 d. Fungal growth occurred in nonacidified water in tinted and untinted bottles by 12 and 14 d, respectively, and in tinted bottles containing acidified water on day 14,

An inquiry into the effects of health related behaviour on dental health among young Asian children resident in a fluoridated city in Canada.

In low-fluoride areas, infant feeding practices have been implicated in the aetiology of extensive caries found in young Asian children. The purpose of this study was to compare the findings in low-fluoride Leeds, UK with fluoridated Edmonton, in Canada. A multilingual interpreter interviewed Asian parents, and their children aged 2 to 5 years were then given a dental examination. From the initial sample contacted by post, a 72 per cent response rate was achieved. Of the 72 parents interviewed, three-quarters reported that the child was initially breast fed, 11 for over 12 months. The majority

Early feeding practices and body mass index z-score among Saudi preschoolers: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Feeding practices during early years may have long-lasting influences on eating behaviors, growth patterns and body mass index (BMI) trajectory. The objectives of this study were to characterize early feeding practices among mothers in Saudi Arabia and examine their associations with child birthweight and BMI z-score (BMIz) at preschool. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study including 209 mother-child dyads who were recruited from different preschools around the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Mothers completed the study questionnaire over the telephone and preschoolers' anthropo

Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis: a study of feeding practices and other possible causes.

We carried out a case-control study of the hospital charts of 91 infants with infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) to determine the feeding practices at the time of discharge from the neonatal nursery. We excluded infants whose feeding might have been influenced by confounding factors. The infants were matched with controls for gestational age. The mean birth weight of the IHPS group was 3501 g and of the control group 3543 g. The male:female ratio for the IHPS group was 5.5. The odds ratio of male predominance was 4. We found that bottle-feeding was 2.9 times more prevalent among th

Intention to breastfeed and other important health-related behaviour and beliefs during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted that breastfeeding is the best form of infant feeding for the first 4-6 months of life. OBJECTIVE: This study explored whether intention to breastfeed is associated with other positive maternal health-related behaviours and beliefs during pregnancy. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was carried out with 789 women attending antenatal clinics at Leicester Royal Infirmary NHS Trust. A structured questionnaire assessed feeding intention, use of folic acid, vitamin and iron supplementation, smoking status, smoking stage of change, and fetal health locus of control

Association Between Bottle Size and Formula Intake in 2-Month-Old Infants.

OBJECTIVE: To determine range of bottle sizes used and examine the relationship between bottle size and total daily consumption of infant formula. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of baseline data collected as part of Greenlight, a cluster randomized trial to prevent childhood obesity at 4 pediatric resident clinics. The Greenlight study included healthy, term infants. For our analysis, parents of exclusively formula-fed infants reported volume per feed, number of feeds per day, and bottle size, which was dichotomized into small (<6 oz) or large (≥6 oz). We identified determinants of bottle

Lack of Immediate Diagnosis and Appropriate Intervention Leads to Malnutrition in an Infant With Cleft Palate.

This case report describes a full-term infant with a cleft palate who experienced malnutrition because of the delayed introduction of a cleft-adapted bottle and identifies potential areas for improvement in clinical practice. The infant's weight for age z-score at birth was 0.05 and dropped to -1.45 by 2 months of age, indicating mild malnutrition. The infant established care with a cleft team and a cleft-adapted bottle was recommended as the primary feeding method. Feeding time subsequently decreased from 60 minutes per feeding to 20 minutes. The infant presented for palate repair at 9 months

The Pima Infant Feeding Study: breast feeding and gastroenteritis in the first year of life.

In 1978, a retrospective study of infant feeding was conducted among 257 Pima Indian women of reproductive age, who were residing on the Gila River Reservation, Arizona. With data on infant feeding patterns from 683 infants born 1950-1977 to the Pima Indian women, infants were classified into one of five feeding groups based on the duration breast-fed and time of introduction and duration bottle-fed. History of severe diarrhea/diarrhea with dehydration/diarrhea and vomiting was abstracted from the infant's medical record and classified as a case of gastroenteritis. The risk of developing a fir

Effect of breast feeding on the plasma cholesterol and growth of infants.

The effect of breast-feeding on plasma cholesterol, body weight, and body length was studied longitudinally in a large free-living cohort of infants (n = 512) from birth until the age of 1 year. Of the cohort, 21.4% were exclusively breast-fed for at least 3 months, 39.3% received bottle-feeding, and 39.3% received a combination of breast- and bottle-feeding. At birth the plasma cholesterol was similar in the three groups. After 3 months the mean plasma cholesterol and proportion of hypercholesterolemic infants in the breast-fed group were significantly (p less than 0.001) higher than that of

Breast feeding for cleft lip and palate patients, using the Hotz-type plate.

OBJECTIVE: Oral-cavity feeding movements were analyzed during sucking and used to modify a Hotz-type plate to facilitate sucking in infants with cleft lip and palate. DESIGN: Sucking movements were analyzed using lateral view cine radiography as three adults fed from a bottle. A Hotz-type plate was then modified to better isolate the oral cavity and to occlude the oral airway. The plate was then utilized in direct breast feeding by 10 babies. OUTCOME MEASURES: Sucking rate, amount of milk taken, and duration of use of the plate were assessed. RESULTS: Wearing this plate, four babies with cl

[Celiac disease and dietary habits in the 1st year of life].

The Authors have performed a study on the dietary habits of 74 celiac children and have analysed retrospectively the type of nursing (breast-feeding or bottle-feeding), the time and the age of gluten introduction. Then they related these data to the age of onset of symptoms. Children breast-fed for 3 months or more showed a marked delay in the onset of the disease and a longer latency time from gluten introduction when compared with bottle-fed children; on the contrary early gluten introduction was not positively correlated to risk of celiac disease. This observations induce to think that brea

Changes in behavioural contingencies produce a loss of tolerance to amphetamine hypophagia in rats despite continued feeding tests while drugged.

Rats administered amphetamine prior to access to milk in bottles develop tolerance to the hypophagic effect of the drug by learning to suppress stereotyped behaviours that interfere with feeding. When tolerant rats are later allowed to drink milk from a bottle in an unintoxicated state, tolerance is lost, even when drug exposure is held constant by administration of the drug after the test. In the present experiment, we show that tolerance can also be lost in the face of continued administration of amphetamine prior to milk tests, as a result of changes in the contingencies of reinforcement th

Sleep SAAF responsive parenting intervention improves mothers' feeding practices: a randomized controlled trial among African American mother-infant dyads.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Parents shape children's early experiences with food, influencing what is served, children's food choices, and how much children eat. Responsive parenting (RP) interventions such as INSIGHT have improved maternal infant feeding practices, but have only been tested among predominantly White families. This secondary analysis of data from the Sleep SAAF (Strong African American Families) RCT tests the effects of an RP intervention designed to prevent rapid infant weight gain on African American mothers' infant feeding practices. METHODS: Primiparous African American mother-

Fluid flow and feeding performance in infant mammals: evaluating the impact of nipple design.

Infant mammals must suckle in order to acquire food. Many factors, including the design of a nipple, impact suckling, and thus can alter feeding performance. For example, feeding on a bottle nipple that has ducts embedded in silicone requires infants to generate suction to acquire milk, whereas a hollow bottle nipple allows infants to express milk via nipple compression. Furthermore, the design of a nipple impacts milk flow, and likely changes the relationships between suction generation, tongue kinematics and milk flow. In this experiment, we designed two ducted bottle nipples with similar pr
