Radiographic and perceptual outcomes of shoulder imbalance in AIS: bracing alone versus bracing with Schroth methods.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of underarm bracing alone versus combined underarm bracing with Schroth methods for radiographic shoulder imbalance in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients and whether radiographic changes translate into patient-perceived changes. METHODS: This retrospective study included moderate AIS patients with radiographic shoulder imbalance, categorized into brace-alone and combined (brace with Schroth methods) groups. Shoulder balance was assessed using standardized radiographs at baseline, first follow-up, and final follow-up. Primary outcomes were cha

Comparison of In-Brace Correction, Compliance, and One-Year Radiographic Outcomes Between Boston and Scoliosis Brace.

Bracing is the primary conservative treatment for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), aiming to arrest curve progression. Therapeutic success relies on initial in-brace correction and patient compliance. This study compares the symmetric Boston brace and the asymmetric 3D Scoliosis Brace (SB) regarding immediate correction, compliance, and one-year outcomes in Cobb and Raimondi angles. A retrospective observational study involved 135 adolescents (Boston: n=54, SB: n=81) with AIS (Cobb 20-45°). Outcomes included percentage of in-brace correction, compliance (wear time %), and changes in Cobb

Impact of customized add-on nighttime bracing in full-time brace treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: Bracing is an accepted standard therapy for idiopathic scoliosis at Cobb angle ranges between 25° and 40°. However, it is unclear, if a specifically tailored regimen of daytime and nighttime braces (= double brace) yields superior results compared to the standard treatment (single brace for day and night). METHODS: One-hundred-fifteen patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) were assessed before initiation of bracing treatment and at the final follow-up 2 years after deposition of the brace. They were divided into two groups: do

Early Adherence to Prescribed Brace Wear for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Is Associated With Future Brace Wear.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To assess if initial adherence to prescribed brace wear for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) predicts future adherence and curve improvement. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: AIS bracing can be effective if patients adhere to prescribed brace wear. Previous research has associated age, sex, and brace prescription length with future adherence. We hypothesize that a patient's initial adherence to brace wear may be associated with future adherence and outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive AIS patients who met the Scoliosis Research So

No Difference Between Bracing and No Bracing After Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Tibial Plateau Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: The use of a postoperative brace may be beneficial after open reduction and internal fixation of tibial plateau fractures. However, bracing has potential drawbacks related to cost, fitting, wound complications, and compliance. We hypothesized that no difference will be found between patients with and without bracing after open reduction and internal fixation of tibial plateau fractures. METHODS: In this prospective, comparative trial, patients were randomized to 6 weeks of bracing or no bracing after open reduction and internal fixation of tibial plateau fractures. Functional, s

"Brace Technology" Thematic Series - The ScoliOlogiC® Chêneau light™ brace in the treatment of scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Bracing concepts in use today for the treatment of scoliosis include symmetric and asymmetric hard braces usually made of polyethylene (PE) and soft braces. The plaster cast method worldwide seems to be the most practiced technique for the construction of hard braces at the moment. CAD (Computer Aided Design) systems are available which allow brace adjustments without plaster. Another possibility is the use of the ScoliOlogiC™ off the shelf system enabling the Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist (CPO) to construct a light brace for scoliosis correction from a variety of pattern spe

Impact of Brace-Related Stress on Brace Compliance in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Single-Center Comparative Study Using Objective Compliance Measurement and Brace-Related Stress.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the brace compliance and clinical background of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) who demonstrate different degrees of psychological brace-related stress. METHODS: Forty-five patients initiating brace treatment with a Cobb angle between 25° and 45° were included. Patients receiving brace treatment for AIS were administered a questionnaire for brace-related stress (i.e., the Japanese version of the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Brace [JBSSQ-brace]). Based on their scores, we allocated the patients into two stress groups: mil

Spinal ultrasound to quantify in-brace correction before nighttime brace fabrication in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

PURPOSE: Initial in-brace curve correction is an important predictor of brace treatment success in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). After brace measurement and fabrication, in-brace correction is sometimes not perfect and needs further optimization. Ideally, in-brace correction is known before fabrication without using ionizing radiation. This study investigates the use of spinal ultrasounds during Providence nighttime brace measurement, and tests the correlation between spinal ultrasound angles in corrected position and radiographic in-brace Cobb angles. METHODS: Twenty-four consecutiv

The comparison of functional bracing of humeral shaft fractures: thermoplastic custom against preprepared commercial braces.

BACKGROUND: Functional humeral bracing of midshaft humeral fractures has been widely accepted as a gold standard for nonoperative treatment. Despite reported high union rates, there is no proven superiority of any orthosis. Here we aim to compare the outcomes after the use of custom-made thermoplastic vs. commercial humeral brace with regard to time to union, nonunion rates, types of nonunion, and conversion to surgery. METHODS: Patients with humeral fractures treated between 2018 and 2021 were identified retrospectively by electronic records. Only diaphyseal humerus fractures (AO 12) were in

Association of success of brace treatment and various aspects of in-brace correction in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Although skeletal maturity and brace wear time contribute to the success of brace treatment in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), the extent of initial in-brace correction for ensuring successful outcomes remains unclear. We hypothesized that the degree of initial in-brace correction correlates with brace success in patients with AIS. METHOD: The study included 135 AIS patients with a major Cobb angle of 20°-40° treated with a thoracic lumbosacral orthosis for at least one year and followed up for skeletal maturity. The subjects were divided into two groups: the skeletally imm

Evaluation of Predictors and Outcomes of Bracing with Emphasis on the Immediate Effects of in-Brace Correction in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is defined as a lateral curvature of the spine of unknown etiology with a Cobb angle of greater than 10 degrees with vertebral rotation. Bracing, specifically with a rigid thoracolumbosacral orthosis (TLSO), decreases the risk of curve progression to over 50 degrees, the threshold for surgical intervention. Some authors have suggested that 30-50% in-brace correction of the Cobb angles is required to prevent significant curve progression. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the current bracing protocol at the University of Iowa as a quality

Brace treatment for patients with Scheuermann's disease - a review of the literature and first experiences with a new brace design.

BACKGROUND: In contemporary literature few have written in detail on the in-brace correction effects of braces used for the treatment of hyperkyphosis. Bradford et al. found their attempts effective, treating Scheuermann's kyphosis with Milwaukee braces, but their report did not specifically focus on in-brace corrections. White and Panjabi's research attempted to correct a curvature of > 50 degrees with the help of distraction forces, but consequently led to a reduction in patient comfort in the application of the Milwaukee brace. In Germany they avoid this by utitlising braces to treat hyperk

Valgus bracing in patients with medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee. A gait analysis study of a new brace.

A new valgus brace was evaluated in 15 patients with medial osteoarthritis of the knee and a varus leg axis. Significant improvement of pain and function were found after 6 weeks of brace treatment. Gait analysis showed that the brace had a tendency of lowering the peak varus moment about the knee. This effect was more profound in the presence of higher initial varus deformity angle of the knee. Furthermore, bracing led to a small decrease of knee extension at the end of the swing phase and an increase of walking velocity. The mechanisms identified by gait analysis in this study may be of clin

Functional cast-bracing for Colles' fractures. A comparison between cast-bracing and conventional plaster casts.

The use of Orthoplast cast-bracing to allow early hand function in the treatment of displaced Colles' fractures was investigated in 243 patients. They were randomly allocated into three groups: in the first a conventional Colles' type plaster was used; in the second an above-elbow cast-brace with the forearm in supination; and in the third a below-elbow cast-brace. Radiographic measurements were made at each stage of treatment, and the final anatomical result was scored using Sarmiento's (1975) criteria. Function was assessed at three months and at six months. The anatomical result was not inf

Skeletal Maturity, Brace Compliance, and In-Brace Correction Rate Are Important Factors Associated with Cobb Angle Progression after Brace Treatment in Patients with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated brace treatment for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) to comprehensively evaluate the factors associated with curve progression, including the effects of in-brace correction rate (ICR) and objective brace compliance. Additionally, it aimed to establish a clinically useful optimal ICR threshold for effective curve progression control. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data, 116 patients with AIS, with Cobb angles of 20°-40° and at least 1-year follow-up were included. Patients whose Cobb angl

Predicting final results of brace treatment of adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis: first out-of-brace radiograph is better than in-brace radiograph-SOSORT 2020 award winner.

PURPOSE: In-brace radiograph of adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has been shown to reflect brace efficacy and the possibility of achieving curve correction. Conversely, the first out-of-brace radiograph could demonstrate the patient's ability to maintain the correction. We aimed to determine which of the two radiographs is the best predictor of the Cobb angle at the end of treatment (final radiograph). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of a prospective dataset. METHODS: The population was selected based on the following inclusion criteria: AIS, age 10-18 years; Risser score 0-2;
