Pediatric Minor Traumatic Brain Injury : Growing Skull Fracture, Traumatic Cerebrospinal Fluid Leakage, Concussion.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health issue that causes significant morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. Pediatric minor TBIs are the most common and are widely underreported because not all patients seek medical attention. The specific management of these patients is distinct from that of adult patients because of the different physiologies in these age groups. This article focuses on minor TBIs, particularly growing skull fractures, traumatic cerebrospinal fluid leakage, and concussion.

A Potential Role Exists for Nutritional Interventions in the Chronic Phase of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Concussion and Sports-Related Concussion: A Systematic Review.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) represents a significant burden for individuals, economies, and healthcare systems worldwide. Recovery protocols focus on medication and physiotherapy-based interventions. Animal studies have shown that antioxidants, branched-chain amino acids and omega-3 fatty acids may improve neurophysiological outcomes after TBI. However, there appears to be a paucity of nutritional interventions in humans with chronic (≥1 month) symptomology post-mTBI. This systematic literature review aimed to consolidate evidence for nutrition and dietary-related interventions in human

A Mouse Model of Single and Repetitive Rotational Closed Head Concussive Brain Injury.

Concussive brain injury (CBI), the pathophysiological substrate underlying clinical concussion, is a frequent yet insufficiently understood condition with potential long-term neurological impairment in a subset of patients. Especially repetitive CBI, i.e., in contact sports, has been associated with lasting cognitive deficits and progressive neurodegeneration (e.g., chronic traumatic encephalopathy, CTE). To address this knowledge gap, a reproducible mouse model of closed-head rotational brain injury that recapitulates key biomechanical and pathological features of CBI was established. A stere

EEG-based brain biomarker supports hyperbaric oxygen therapy for acute concussions.

Acute concussion is a significant health issue among youth athletes, affecting their quality of life and performance. However, the standard of care, rest, has been questioned, while treatments are lacking. This pilot case series used an FDA-cleared electroencephalogram-based brain biomarker (EEGBB) to demonstrate hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO₂) improvement for treating concussion. From December 31, 2021, through May 27, 2022, school-aged patients presenting at two HBO₂ clinics within ten days of injury with an acute concussion confirmed by an initial EEGBB assessment were evaluated. The EEGBB

The crippled brain that prolonged the Civil War: General Joseph Hooker's concussions at Chancellorsville.

President Lincoln appointed General Joseph Hooker to command the Army of the Potomac in January 1863. In April 1863, Hooker had 130,000 men compared to the Confederate Army's 60,000. The Union forces had more food, clothing, and ammunition. On a decisive day of the Chancellorsville campaign, as Hooker stood on his headquarters porch, a cannonball struck the pillar against which he was leaning. He was hurled to the floor, stunned and senseless. Unconsciousness followed a lucid interval, requiring rest, when another cannonball struck near him. Half of the army was not thrust into battle, resulti

Chronic Neurobehavioral Sex Differences in a Murine Model of Repetitive Concussive Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) resulting from repeated head trauma is frequently characterized by diffuse axonal injury and long-term motor, cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Given the delay, often decades, between repeated head traumas and the presentation of symptoms in TBI patients, animal models of repeated injuries should be studied longitudinally to properly assess the longer-term effects of multiple concussive injuries on functional outcomes. In this study, male and cycling female C57BL/6J mice underwent repeated (three) concussive brain injuries (rCBI) delivered via a Leica Impact

A concussive-like brain injury model in mice (I): impairment in learning and memory.

The modeling of human concussive brain injury (CBI) in the laboratory has been challenging. In the present study, we developed an experimental CBI model in mice using a novel weight-drop device. Various injury levels were examined by adjusting the height of the falling weight (diameter 10 mm, length 20 cm, weight 21 g). At a height of 50 cm, the impact resulted in a mortality rate of 46.7% with a skull fracture rate of 28.6%. At a height of 25 cm, however, the impact produced a concussive-like brain injury (CLBI) to the mice without skull fracture. A series of pathophysiological and neurobehav

[Value of neuropsychologic tests and acoustic evoked brain stem potentials in the prognosis of subjective complaints in patients with brain concussion].

Neuropsychological impairment and pathologically delayed Acoustic Brain stem Responses (ABR) have been found in patients examined after minor head injury. The relation of these alterations with the emergence of post-concussional symptoms is unknown. In this study 27 patients were examined with ABR within 48 hours of a clearly defined head injury and with a complete neuropsychological test battery one month after the trauma. They were checked for postconcussional symptoms such as headache, depression or dizziness one year later. ABR recordings were pathological in four patients. Neuropsychologi

Incretin Mimetics as Potential Therapeutics for Concussion and Traumatic Brain Injury: A Narrative Review.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents a significant health concern, with an estimated 70 million annual cases worldwide. Mild brain trauma (concussions) is the most common TBI (81%), followed by moderate (11%) and severe (8%). Cytokine release and neuroinflammation after TBI may cause blood-brain barrier and tissue damage, triggering unfavorable outcomes, including disabilities and mortality. Current TBI treatments, focused on preventing secondary injury, are limited and insufficient. Therefore, new therapeutic approaches are necessary. A growing body of recent literature supports the potent

Quantitative assessment of brain injury and concussion induced by an unintentional soccer ball impact.

BACKGROUND: Accidental impact on a player's head by a powerful soccer ball may lead to brain injuries and concussions during games. It is crucial to assess these injuries promptly and accurately on the field. However, it is challenging for referees, coaches, and even players themselves to accurately recognize potential injuries and concussions following such impacts. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a list of minimum ball velocity thresholds that can result in concussions at different impact locations on the head. Additionally, it is important to identify the affected brain regions resp

Longitudinal Trajectories of Post-Concussive Symptoms Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Individuals recovering from mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) represent a heterogenous population that requires distinct treatment approaches. Identification of recovery trajectories improves our ability to understand the natural history of mild TBI recovery and develop targeted interventions. OBJECTIVE: To utilize group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) to identify distinct patterns of symptom recovery following mild TBI in the first 6 months after mild TBI. METHODS: This study is comprised of 253 adults who presented to the emergency department with mild TBI and completed assess

Hyper-acute effects of sub-concussive soccer headers on brain function and hemodynamics.

INTRODUCTION: Sub-concussive head impacts in soccer are drawing increasing research attention regarding their acute and long-term effects as players may experience thousands of headers in a single season. During these impacts, the head experiences rapid acceleration similar to what occurs during a concussion, but without the clinical implications. The physical mechanism and response to repetitive impacts are not completely understood. The objective of this work was to examine the immediate functional outcomes of sub-concussive level impacts from soccer heading in a natural, non-laboratory envi

Mild traumatic brain injury/concussion and female sexuality, a scoping review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) in 2010 called for more head injury research on gender disparities to bridge the gender gap for the short-and long-term effects of TBI, including sexual and reproductive outcomes. In this paper, we review the state of the literature before and after the ACRM announcement, and evaluate how research teams have considered females and mildly injured TBI(mTBI)/concussion groups in post-TBI-related changes in sexual functioning. METHODS: The research question for this scoping review was "what is the state of the literature in the e

The Effect of Sub-Concussive Impacts during a Rugby Tackling Drill on Brain Function.

Concussion is known to detrimentally affect brain health. Rugby tackles commonly occur with high collision force between tackler and ball carrier, and low impact head contact is not uncommon. Cognitive deficits following a bout of soccer ball heading has been attributed to the impact and termed sub-concussion. Although soccer ball heading studies provide evidence for acute effects of sub-concussion, it is unknown whether this phenomenon occurs following rugby tackles. This study investigates the acute effects of rugby tackles on brain function and balance in rugby players. Twenty-six volunteer

Effects of naloxone on systemic and cerebral responses to experimental concussive brain injury in cats.

This study examined the effects of bolus injections of naloxone hydrochloride, a specific narcotic antagonist, on systemic cardiovascular function, intracranial and cerebral perfusion pressures, blood gas status, and cortical encephalograms (EEG's) in 38 cats after two different grades of experimental brain injury. Naloxone had no prolonged effects on uninjured control animals. However, as compared to a saline-injected control group, naloxone significantly reversed the hypotension and reduction in pulse pressure seen after higher grades of injury. These changes persisted for at least 60 minute
