High estimated pulse-wave velocity is associated with lower brain white matter microstructural integrity twelve years later.

High pulse wave velocity (PWV), a measure of increased arterial stiffness, is a risk factor for cerebrovascular disease. PWV can be estimated (ePWV) from age and blood pressure (BP). Elevated ePWV is associated with cerebral small-vessel disease, cognitive decline, and dementia risk in middle-aged and older adults. We examined data from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) Neuroscience Project to examine the association of ePWV with brain white matter microstructure. BP was measured in 132 middle-aged adults (mean age 53+/- 10 years, n = 77 women, n = 38 Black/African American) between 200

Association between blood-brain barrier permeability and changes in pulse wave velocity following a recent small subcortical infarct.

Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) is associated with increased blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. We sought to evaluate whether arterial stiffness might be associated with BBB permeability in patients with cSVD. We assessed BBB permeability using Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) in 29 patients that had suffered a recent small subcortical infarct (RSSI). BBB permeability in the whole brain (WB), gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) was assessed with the parameter Ktrans. We used ambulatory blood pressure monitoring to measure 24-h systolic blood pressure (24-h SBP), diastolic b

Supershear Rayleigh wave imaging for quantitative assessment of biomechanical properties of brain using air-coupled optical coherence elastography.

Recently, supershear Rayleigh waves (SRWs) have been proposed to characterize the biomechanical properties of soft tissues. The SRWs propagate along the surface of the medium, unlike surface Rayleigh waves, SRWs propagate faster than bulk shear waves. However, their behavior and application in biological tissues is still elusive. In brain tissue elastography, shear waves combined with magnetic resonance elastography or ultrasound elastography are generally used to quantify the shear modulus, but high spatial resolution elasticity assessment in 10 μm scale is still improving. Here, we develop a

Word deafness after resection of a pineal body tumor in the presence of normal wave latencies of the auditory brain stem response.

We studied the case of a 48-year-old woman who had resection of a pineal body tumor in terms of postoperative audiological function. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging disclosed partial inferior colliculi destruction and medial geniculate body degeneration. A pure tone audiogram revealed only moderate sensorineural hearing loss, but her speech perception was totally impaired. The binaural sound localization function was also impaired. The auditory brain stem response (ABR) showed waves I, III, and V to have normal latencies. The amplitude of wave III was larger than that of wave V. These

Effect of caffeine on respiratory rate, recovery time, and brain wave activity during emergence from sevoflurane anaesthesia in rats.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether caffeine affects the respiratory rate, recovery time, and brain slow-wave (theta and delta) activity during emergence from sevoflurane anaesthesia in rats. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 16) were randomly divided into two groups: control (saline) and caffeine (75 mg/kg). After tripolar electrode implantation, rats were placed in an anaesthesia induction chamber and brain electrocorticographic wave activity was recorded. Anaesthesia was induced with 4% sevoflurane (4 L/min O2) for 5 min, and once all the rats were asleep, sevoflurane concentration was re

Lower slow wave sleep and rapid eye movement sleep are associated with brain atrophy of Alzheimer's disease-vulnerable regions.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep deficiency is associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. We examined the association of sleep architecture with anatomical features observed in AD: (1) atrophy of hippocampus, entorhinal, inferior parietal, parahippocampal, precuneus, and cuneus regions ("AD-vulnerable regions") and (2) cerebral microbleeds (CMBs). METHODS: In 270 participants of the Atherosclerosis Risk in the Communities Study, we examined the association of baseline sleep architecture with anatomical features identified on brain magnetic resonance imaging 13-17 years later. Sleep archite

Association of abnormal p-wave parameters with brain MRI morphology: The atherosclerosis risk in communities neurocognitive study (ARIC-NCS).

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence indicates that abnormal P-wave parameters (PWPs)-ECG markers of atrial myopathy-are associated with incident dementia, independent of atrial fibrillation (AF) and clinical ischemic stroke. However, the mechanisms remain unclear and may include subclinical vascular brain injury. Hence, we evaluated the association of abnormal PWPs with brain MRI correlates of vascular brain injury in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Neurocognitive Study (ARIC-NCS). METHODS: ARIC-NCS participants who underwent 3T brain MRI scans in 2011-2013 were included. PWPs were measured f

Effects of Isolated and Combined Exposure of the Brain and Lungs to a Laser-Induced Shock Wave(s) on Physiological and Neurological Responses in Rats.

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) has been suggested to be caused by direct head exposure and by torso exposure to a shock wave (thoracic hypotheses). It is unclear, however, how torso exposure affects the brain in real time. This study applied a mild-impulse laser-induced shock wave(s) (LISW[s]) only to the brain (Group 1), lungs (Group 2), or to the brain and lungs (Group 3) in rats. Because LISWs are unaccompanied by a dynamic pressure in principle, the effects of acceleration can be excluded, allowing analysis of the pure primary mechanism (the effects of a shock wave). For all r

Mapping adolescent brain change reveals dynamic wave of accelerated gray matter loss in very early-onset schizophrenia.

Neurodevelopmental models for the pathology of schizophrenia propose both polygenetic and environmental risks, as well as early (pre/perinatal) and late (usually adolescent) developmental brain abnormalities. With the use of brain mapping algorithms, we detected striking anatomical profiles of accelerated gray matter loss in very early-onset schizophrenia; surprisingly, deficits moved in a dynamic pattern, enveloping increasing amounts of cortex throughout adolescence. Early-onset patients were rescanned prospectively with MRI, at 2-year intervals at three time points, to uncover the dynamics

Atypical brain responses to 40-Hz click trains in girls with Rett syndrome: Auditory steady-state response and sustained wave.

AIM: The current study aimed to infer neurophysiological mechanisms of auditory processing in children with Rett syndrome (RTT)-rare neurodevelopmental disorders caused by MECP2 mutations. We examined two brain responses elicited by 40-Hz click trains: auditory steady-state response (ASSR), which reflects fine temporal analysis of auditory input, and sustained wave (SW), which is associated with integral processing of the auditory signal. METHODS: We recorded electroencephalogram findings in 43 patients with RTT (aged 2.92-17.1 years) and 43 typically developing children of the same age durin

Acute transcutaneous cervical but not auricular vagus nerve stimulation increases alpha wave brain activity and lowers arterial blood pressure.

Noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) devices promise stress-relief through increased parasympathetic activity and a more relaxed mental state, associated with heightened alpha wave electroencephalogram (EEG) activity. The cervical vagus nerve (CVN) contains five to six times more Aβ-fibers than the auricular branch of the vagus nerve (ABVN). In addition, the CVN contains afferent and efferent fibers, whereas the ABVN is a purely afferent nerve. We hypothesized that hemodynamic, autonomic, and cerebral responses to cervical VNS are more pronounced than those to auricular VNS. Young healthy

Inducing Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in C. elegans via Cavitation-Free Surface Acoustic Wave-Driven Ultrasonic Irradiation.

Mild traumatic brain injury is an all-too-common outcome from modern warfare and sport, and lacks a reproducible model for assessment of potential treatments and protection against it. Here we consider the use of surface acoustic wave (SAW) irradiation of C. elegans worms-without cavitation-as a potential, ethically reasonable animal-on-a-chip model for inducing traumatic brain injury in an animal, producing significant effects on memory and learning that could prove useful in a model that progress from youth to old age in but a few weeks. We show a significant effect by SAW on the ability of

Metabolic activity is increased in discrete brain regions before the occurrence of spike-and-wave discharges in weanling rats with genetic absence epilepsy.

In the present study, we measured basal local cerebral metabolic rates for glucose (LCMRglcs) in immature genetic absence epilepsy rats from Strasbourg (GAERS) at postnatal day 21 (P21), at which age no spike-and-wave discharges can be recorded. LCMRglcs in GAERS were compared to those in control non-epileptic (NE) rats of the same age selected from our breeding colony. LCMRglcs were measured in 60 structures by the quantitative [14C]2-deoxyglucose (2DG) autoradiographic technique. In P21 GAERS, LCMRglcs were similar to those of P21 NE rats in 46 areas. They increased over NE control levels in

Cochlear processes affecting wave V latency of the auditory evoked brain stem response. A study of patients with sensory hearing loss.

The effects of inner ear pathologies on wave V latency of the auditory evoked brain stem response (BSR) were studied in 12 selected patients with flat, low-frequency, severe high-frequency, and gradual high-frequency sensory hearing loss. In patients with flat and low-frequency sensory hearing loss (Meniere's disease), the latencies of wave V at intensities 4--10 dB greater than their response thresholds were roughly the same as those in normal-hearing subjects. In patients with severe high-frequency sensory hearing loss (sharp cut-off at about 2 or 3 kHz), the latencies of wave V were always
