As part of the Department of Health's National Breast Screening Trial a seven year study is in progress in Huddersfield to assess the effect of an educational programme in Breast Self Examination (BSE) on the mortality due to breast cancer among women aged 45-64. The initial cohort of 22,484 women have completed 3 years in the study and show a higher than expected annual incidence rate of breast cancer. There is no significant difference in the incidence rates between those who attended meetings for BSE instruction and those who did not. Similarly there is no difference in stages of presentati

Breast self-examination (BSE), increasingly promoted as a good health habit, is gaining recognition by surgeons as a significant factor in tumour size and staging at diagnosis. Clinically-based reports leave unanswered important behavioural questions and pay scant attention to the quality of the teaching or of the practice of BSE. This paper argues that if BSE is to be used as the coarse-screening modality of which it seems to be capable, we must apply to it the same criteria as to other screening modalities. Since BSE ipso facto must be undertaken by the women herself, it is a screening in wh

Breast self-examination (BSE) may be effective in the early detection of breast cancer, but women must be aware of both the benefit of the procedure and the need for regular practice. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects of modeling plus rehearsal with respect to knowledge, attitudes, and subsequent frequency of BSE among women. The sample for this study consisted of 292 college students randomly assigned to one of two groups and exposed to: a facilitator-conducted program using modeling plus rehearsal (treatment group); or pamphlets addressing breast cancer and BSE (comparis

Of 28 788 women aged 40 to 74 registered at 28 university teaching practices in greater Belfast, half were randomly selected to receive a booklet on breast self-examination from their general practitioner at the start of the study and 1 year later. The frequency of breast abnormalities was identical in both groups (0.83%) during the 2-year follow-up. Early malignant breast cancers (stages TX, TO, Tla) were significantly more frequent in the intervention group (53.6%) than in the control group (24.3%). Among women in the intervention group with malignant lesions, 2 sites, left nipple and left i

The importance of competent and regular breast self-examination in the early detection and improved outcome of breast cancer cannot be emphasized enough. In their contacts with women, nurses are in an opportune position to promote BSE through education and demonstration. Breast self-examination is an area where many nurses are not comfortable. However, with planned and organized instruction, professional nurses can assume the role of teaching this important skill. Breast self-examination can then be incorporated into any clinical setting where professional nursing is practiced.

In 1988, a cross-sectional survey was carried out in the Romagna region (Italy) to evaluate the association between knowledge of breast pathophysiology and preventive attitudes and screening tests practice for breast cancer. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to a sample of asymptomatic women aged 20-64 years living in the city of Faenza (Northern Italy). Of the 657 responders, 58% reported that they practiced breast self-examination; 55% had had a professional breast examination, and only 9% had had a mammogram as a screening test. Breast cancer is the top cancer in women worldwide and its incidence is increasing, particularly in developing countries. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), many cases are first diagnosed in later stages and at younger age compared to those seen in developed countries. Early detection in order to improve breast cancer outcome and survival remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. Performance of breast self examination is one of the important steps for identifying breast disease at an early stage, by the woman herself. No information has hitherto been available about the frequency of th

OBJECTIVE: While the relatively common nature of female breast cancer has resulted in a high level of general awareness, male breast cancer is still comparatively unknown to the general public and to healthcare professionals. The objective of this study is to explore the perceptions and opinions about male breast cancer and male breast self-examination among male university students.
METHODOLOGY: In-depth interviews were conducted among 36 male university students from the Management and Science University, Malaysia, selected by simple random sampling. The themes of the interview were: knowle

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the industrialized world and a leading cause of death. Breast self-examination (BSE) is one of the methods for an early detection of breast cancer. In the present study the effectiveness of a campaign promoting BSE and breast awareness was analysed. Seminars were conducted in 2003 in Lower Saxony, Germany by a female gynaecologist and a social pedagogue and included a lecture, an individual training in BSE in a separate room and a talk about the importance of regular BSEs. Questionnaires were handed out immediately after the seminar and were

A population based programme to educate women in breast self-examination (BSE) was organised as part of the UK Trial of Early Detection of Breast Cancer. Women who responded to an invitation to a meeting were educated in groups and were not routinely screened. Open access clinics offered x ray and clinical examination to all women in the study age group of 45 to 64. Women who presented for screening without prior BSE education were taught individually by clinic staff. Women taught by the two methods were surveyed by post and their BSE practice since education was compared. It was hypothesised

Women' knowledge of breast cancer and their beliefs about susceptibility to breast cancer and benefits of breast self-examination were explored in relation to frequency of practice of breast self-examination. Previous findings indicated that knowledge and beliefs may affect the practice of preventive health behaviors. A self-report questionnaire was administered to 263 women contacted through sorority alumnae groups and Y.M.C.A. groups. Subjects were grouped according to levels of physical exercise (high, moderate, or none) and compared on knowledge and beliefs about breast cancer and breast s
