Bronchial stump re-resection for carcinoid tumor recurrence after left pneumonectomy: Case report.

Carcinoid tumors of the lung are rare, low-grade neoplasms within the neuroendocrine tumor spectrum. They are classified as typical and atypical carcinoids. Typical carcinoids are predominantly centrally located and rarely metastasize, whereas atypical carcinoids more commonly occur in peripheral locations and have a higher propensity for distant metastasis. Most patients benefit from curative surgical treatment. In this case report, we describe a patient who previously underwent left pneumonectomy for a typical carcinoid tumor and subsequently developed a local recurrence requiring re-resecti

[Combined gastric and respiratory heterotopia in the rectum suggesting malignancy].

Heterotopia refers to the presence of normal cells or tissue located in anatomically unusual sites of the body. In the gastrointestinal tract, most heterotopic lesions do not cause any symptoms, but rarely, they can be mistaken for neoplasms during endoscopic examinations. A 45-year-old man presented with lower abdominal pain and blood in the stool. Macroscopically, a polypoid lesion was found and resected by endoscopic submucosal dissection. Histologically, ectopic gastric mucosa, salivary gland-like structures compatible with bronchial glands, and respiratory epithelium were found. This comb

Lung cancer developing from tracheal bronchus.

Tracheal bronchus is a rare congenital anomaly of the bronchial tree, in which an aberrant bronchus originates in the trachea anywhere above the carina, but usually within 2 cm of it. Lung neoplasms that develop from tracheal bronchus have been identified only rarely. We present a case of tracheal bronchus that included a malignancy of the affected right upper lobe. The post-surgical histological stage was T4N0M0 stage IIIA. The patient was in good condition 24 months after the operation, and there was no evidence of recurrence. Before 2012, 14 cases of lung cancer that developed from tracheal

Pulmonary fibrosarcoma in childhood: fiber-optic bronchoscopic diagnosis and review of the literature.

Primary pulmonary fibrosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor in childhood. In the absence of metastases, complete resection is curative. An 8-year-old boy suffered from unresolving pneumonia due to an obstructing lesion in the left main bronchus. Cytology of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and histology of bronchial biopsy revealed the diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosarcoma. The tumor did not respond to chemotherapy, and a total lobectomy with sleeve resection was performed with complete removal of the neoplasm. Two years after the operation the child has no evidence of disease.

Sleeve resections and bronchoplastic procedures in typical central carcinoid tumours.

BACKGROUND: Typical carcinoids are low grade malignant neuroendocrine neoplasms, mostly located centrally in the tracheobronchial tree. The aim of our study was to analyse the long-term survival and surgical treatment outcome in patients submitted to parenchyma-sparing resections for typical central carcinoid tumours. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 70 patients who underwent sleeve resections or bronchoplastic procedures. We performed 21 sleeve lobectomies, 9 sleeve resections of the main bronchus, 25 bronchoplasties associated with lung resections and 15 isolated wedge bronc

Bronchial brush cytology of primary anaplastic large cell lymphoma of lung.

Primary pulmonary lymphoma is defined as clonal lymphoid proliferation affecting one or both lungs in a patient with no extrapulmonary involvement at the time of diagnosis or during the subsequent 3 months. Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a rare T-cell neoplasm which occurs as two distinct clinical entities-cutaneous and systemic variant. Primary lung involvement is extremely uncommon. It can be classified on the basis of being positive or negative for ALK rearrangement which carries prognostic significance. The 2016 revision of World Health Organization (WHO) classification of lympho

[Neoplasm mortality in women in reproductive age (15 to 49 years) in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, from 1991 to 1995].

OBJECTIVE: To describe the mortality owing to neoplasms in women of reproductive age (15 to 49 years) in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, from 1991 to 1995. METHODS: A list of all deaths and their underlying causes, coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, 9 th revision, and estimates of the female population according to age groups were provided by the SEADE Foundation. Specific coefficients for 100 thousand women for each year as well as the medians of the coefficients related to 5 years, and the percentage of underlying causes of death by subgroups were calculated.

Primary Leiomyosarcoma of the Bronchus: 18F-FDG PET/CT Findings.

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the bronchus is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm. A 29-year-old man presented with persisting cough and sputum over 1 month. Unenhanced and contrast-enhanced chest CT showed a nodular lesion in the main bronchus of the left lower lobe and multiple enlarged lymph nodes in the mediastinum. Preoperative staging F-FDG PET/CT scan displayed a hypermetabolic lesion of the known nodule and mild FDG uptake of mediastinal lymph nodes. The histological examination confirmed bronchial leiomyosarcoma and reactive hyperplasia in lymph nodes.

Acquired Bronchobiliary Fistula in a Young Adult Patient With Sepsis: A Case Report.

Bronchobiliary fistula (BBF) is a rare, highly morbid condition that results from an abnormal connection between biliary channels and the bronchial tree. In the past, this condition has been known to be caused by untreated hydatid cysts or hepatic abscesses that can erode through the diaphragm into the pleural cavity and bronchial tree, creating fistulation. However, the condition's spectrum has changed in recent years, and BBFs have also become associated with neoplasm, iatrogenic causes, and trauma. Cases of BBF are treated differently, either with simple conservative management or invasive

FIP1L1-PDGFRA fusion gene in a patient with asthma and rhinitis.

Eosinophilia in asthma or rhinitis is usually considered to be reactive to the allergic diseases. We report a 33-year-old man with asthma and rhinitis, and progressive hypereosinophilia. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis detected interstitial chromosomal deletion at 4q12 in cells of the bone marrow. The patient was diagnosed as myeloproliferative neoplasm with a FIP1L1-PDGFRA fusion gene, and successfully treated with the tyrosine kinase inhibitor, imatinib. Clonal expansion of eosinophils due to the FIP1L1-PDGFRA fusion gene could underlie refractory mechanisms in patients with bron

Endobronchial Schwannoma Presenting as Persistent Cough: Diagnosis and Successful Bronchoscopic Resection.

Schwannomas are benign, slow-growing tumors that arise from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath. Pulmonary schwannomas are extremely uncommon, accounting for approximately 0.2% of all lung tumors and representing a small fraction of tracheobronchial neoplasms. We present a case involving a 49-year-old non-smoking male with a history of Crohn's disease who reported a persistent productive cough, dyspnea, and a subjective sensation of airway obstruction that did not improve with nebulized therapy. Chest CT revealed an endobronchial lesion obstructing the right mainstem bronchus. Flexibl

[Pulmonary carcinoid tumors].

27 patients suffering from carcinoid of the lung (18 females and 9 males, middle age 52 years, range 26-68) underwent surgery in our department. The neoplasms were located at the pulmonary hilum in 21 cases. The diagnosis was occasional in 6 cases, cough (51.8%) and recurrent bronchitis (37%) were the most frequent symptoms. No instances of carcinoid syndrome were detected. Preoperative staging ruled out pathologic mediastinal lymph nodes or hematogenous metastases. 26 patients underwent complete excision of the neoplasm (11 lobectomies, 9 pneumonectomies, 4 bilobectomies, 1 segmental resectio

Wrong place at the right time, a case of primary bronchial myoepithelial carcinoma.

Primary bronchial myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare neoplasm, accounting for less than 1% of all primary lung malignancies. These tumours typically arise from submucosal tracheobronchial glands and are resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, making surgical resection the preferred treatment. We present the case of a 78-year-old male who was incidentally found to have a right upper lobe endobronchial lesion following investigation for a chest infection. Imaging revealed a 3.8 cm obstructive mass in the right main bronchus. Bronchoscopic biopsy confirmed a high-grade myoepithelial carcinoma.

Parotid gland metastasis - an unusual presentation of adenocarcinoma of lung.

Lung cancer is the most frequent malignant disease and the most common cause of cancer death in the world. Primary carcinoma of the lung was an uncommon cancer until the 1930s. Common cell types in bronchial carcinoma are squamous 35%, Adenocarcinoma 30%, Small-cell 20%, Large-cell 15%. We present a case of a bronchial neoplasm metastasis to the parotid gland. A 50 years old male patient presented with a 7×5cm painless parotid mass that was metastatic adenocarcinoma on histopathology. Then we thoroughly examined the patient and he was investigated accordingly. There was an abnormal shadow in t

Skin and thigh muscle metastasis from papillary thyroid cancer.

A 44-year-old man with total thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) performed at the age of 38 years was referred for mediastinal metastases demonstrated on chest radiograph and high serum thyroglobulin (Tg 328 ng/ml). Computed tomography revealed mediastinal lymph node enlargement with left bronchial compression and reduction of bronchial diameter, as well as two metastases in the left lung. Bronchoscopic biopsy findings showed a poorly-differentiated PTC, while a whole body scan after 131-Iodine therapy demonstrated uptake in the right subclavicular region. External beam radioth

Endotracheal/endobronchial metastases : clinicopathologic study with special reference to developmental modes.

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal/endobronchial metastases (EEMs) from nonpulmonary neoplasms are rare. However, their definition and developmental modes have not yet been fully elucidated. METHODS: EEMs were defined as documented nonpulmonary neoplasms metastatic to the subsegmental or more proximal central bronchus, in a bronchoscopically visible range. The clinical and pathologic features of 16 cases were reviewed, with special emphasis on the developmental modes based on five criteria: location in the tracheobronchial tree, number of lesions, laterality of lesions, depth of lesions, and relationsh

Immunohistochemical studies on gastrin-releasing peptide- and adrenocorticotropic hormone-containing cells in the human lung.

Bronchial endocrine cells containing gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), a mammalian analog of bombesin, and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) were immunohistochemically localized in paraffin sections of normal and pathologic human lungs. GRP-containing cells were present in fetal bronchi at the 12th gestational week and in "neuroepithelial bodies" about the time of delivery. In normal adult lungs, a few isolated GRP-containing cells were present in bronchial and bronchiolar mucosa. In bronchiectatic or fibrotic lungs, small clusters of GRP-containing cells were occasionally noted in basal bronc

Bronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchial localization of Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is rare. The precise nature of these neoplasms is not yet clear and little is known on the histogenesis and pathogenesis of the disease. Here we present a case of a bronchial MEC with a detailed pathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular analysis. PRESENTATION OF A CASE: A 46 years old Caucasian male patient was referred to our Unit for fever, non productive cough and dyspnea lasting for two months. The chest CT scan evidenced an 8-mm intraluminal lesion in the left main bronchus, in correspondence of the origin of t

Advancements in Interventional Oncology of the Chest: Transarterial Chemoembolization and Related Therapies.

While embolization therapy has been used for many years in the treatment of nonmalignant diseases of the chest, such as pulmonary arteriovenous malformation treatment and bronchial artery embolization for hemorrhage, the application of transarterial techniques to the treatment of chest neoplasms is relatively uncommon. Extrapolating from transarterial chemoembolization techniques used for liver malignancy, investigators have recently sought to expand the indications for transarterial techniques from the control of symptoms such as bleeding to the control of disease progression and potentially
