Brucella is a gram negative, facultative intracellular bacterial pathogen that constitutes a substantial threat to human and animal health. Brucella can replicate in a variety of tissues and can induce immune responses that alter host metabolite availability. Here, mice were infected with B. melitensis and murine spleens, livers, and female reproductive tracts were analyzed by GC-MS to determine tissue-specific metabolic changes at one-, two- and four- weeks post infection. The most remarkable changes were observed at two-weeks post-infection when relative to uninfected tissues, 42 of 329 dete

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is an anthropo-zoonotic infectious disease caused by various Brucella species. It is usually transmitted through contact with infected animals or consumption of contaminated animal products. Brucellosis most commonly affects the musculoskeletal and reticuloendothelial system with additional involvement observed in gastrointestinal system, urinary tract, reproductive system, central nervous system, and cardiovascular system. Skin involvement is extremely rare in brucellosis. Here, we report a rare case of Brucella melitensis infection developing in a back wound following

Brucella melitensis was identified in an aspirate obtained from a patient's hip joint during a procedure at a hospital in Canada. We conducted an investigation into possible exposures among hospital workers; 1 worker who assisted with the procedure tested positive for B. melitensis. Aerosol-generating procedures performed outside the laboratory may facilitate transmission of this bacterium.

Erythritol is a four-carbon sugar preferentially utilized by Brucella spp. The presence of erythritol in the placentas of goats, cows, and pigs has been used to explain the localization of Brucella to these sites and the subsequent accumulation of large amounts of bacteria, eventually leading to abortion. Here we show that Brucella melitensis will also localize to an artificial site of erythritol within a mouse, providing a potential model system to study the pathogenesis of Brucella abortion. Immunohistological staining of the sites of erythritol within infected mice indicated a higher than e

Brucellosis which is a systemic infection, is seen endemically in Turkey. Although there a lot of complications related to brucellosis, soft tissue involvement is rare. In this case report a patient with mature cystic teratoma and a Brucella related obturatory abscess, was presented. A 21-year-old female patient with bilateral pelvic pain was admitted to the hospital with complaints of weakness, backache and ab- dominal swelling. Pelvic examination revealed bilateral adnexial sensitive masses. There were no history of systemic complaints or other organ involvement. The patient had no history o

Brucella bacteremia is not uncommon in children living in endemic areas. Reports on brucella bacteremia, however, are scarce. Its clinical features and complications are unknown. This retrospective review describes the clinical and laboratory characteristics, the relapse rate, and response to different regimens of antimicrobials in children with brucella bacteremia over a 5-year period. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed on all isolates. Data on 62 children with brucella bacteremia were collected between 1996 and 2000. All isolates were of Brucella melitensis species. Most chil

We previously showed that a purE mutant (delta purE201) of Brucella melitensis 16M is attenuated for growth in cultured human monocytes (E. S. Drazek, H. H. Houng, R. M. Crawford, T. L. Hadfield, D. L. Hoover, and R. L. Warren, Infect. Immun. 63:3297-3301, 1995). To determine if this strain is attenuated in animals, we compared the growth of the delta purE201 mutant with that of strain 16M in BALB/c mice. The number of bacteria in the spleen and spleen weight peaked for both strains between 1 and 2 weeks postinfection (p.i.), though the number of delta purE201 cells was significantly less than

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease and virtually all infections derived from exposure to animals or ingestion of unpasteurized dairy products. Brucellosis among family members has been reported. However, screening household members of an index case of acute brucellosis is not a routine procedure. A 10-y-old boy was diagnosed with acute brucellosis. Unpasteurized goat cheese commonly consumed within the family was thought to be the possible source of the bacteria. The family (parents, sister and brother) was screened with physical examination, serum tube agglutination test, blood cultures and ro

Brucellosis is a zoonosis caused by bacteria of the Brucella genus. In ruminants, brucellosis causes abortion, followed by chronic infection and secretion of bacteria in milk. In humans, it usually presents as flu-like symptoms, with serious complications if untreated. Epidemiological studies have only recently established that brucellosis can also cause pregnancy complications in women, but the pathogenic mechanisms are unknown. Pioneering studies in ruminants showed that Brucella infect trophoblasts and then colonise the placenta where they grow to high density. A recent study showed that th

Brucella melitensis Rev.1 is a live attenuated vaccine strain that is widely used to control brucellosis in small ruminants. For successful surveillance and control programs, rapid identification and characterization of Brucella isolates and reliable differentiation of vaccinated and naturally infected animals are essential prerequisites. Although MALDI-TOF MS is increasingly applied in clinical microbiology laboratories for the diagnosis of brucellosis, species or even strain differentiation by this method remains a challenge. To detect biomarkers, which enable to distinguish the B. melitensi

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease endemic in many developing countries, including Türkiye. Among the species that are pathogenic for humans; Brucella melitensis is isolated from livestock animals like sheep and goats, Brucella abortus from cattle and Brucella suis from pigs. Laboratory diagnosis of infection caused by Brucella species with gram-negative coccobacillus morphology; can be made through characteristic culture features, serological tests and molecular methods. Brucellosis, which has a wide distribution of clinical signs and symptoms; can cause various complications by affecting many

Objective: To understand the molecular characteristics and correlation among isolated strains of Brucella melitensis (BM) so as to improve the strategies on prevention and control of the disease in Jiangxi province. Methods: A total of 25 strains of BM isolated from human in 17 counties of Jiangxi province were analyzed by multiple locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) method. Results: A total of 25 strains of BM were classified into 24 independent genotypes with similarities between 67.00% and 100.00% and Simpson index between 0.000 and 0.773. There were 3 genotypes in MLVA8, in

Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection that is usually transmitted from cattle to humans through ingestion of animal milk, direct contact with animal parts, or inhalation of aerosolized particles. In Korea, brucellosis seem to be transmitted through close contact with blood, fetus, urine, and placenta of domestic cow that has been infected by Brucella abortus, or inhalation of B. arbortus while examining or slaughtering cow. Brucella melitensis infection is rare in Korea and there have been no reported cases of B. melitensis originating from other countries until now. This report details a case o

Brucella melitensis is the main etiological agent of brucellosis in sheep and goats, and is also the main agent responsible for human brucellosis, a predominantly occupational disease related to professions in direct contact with livestock. As there is currently no viable method of preventing human brucellosis to safeguard people attention must be directed toward effectively controlling the disease in sheep and goats. This review focuses on the different strategies in different socioeconomic and epidemiologic situations that can be applied to either control or eradicate brucellosis in sheep an
