Serological diagnosis of brucellosis.

AIM: To present a review and to describe the most widely used laboratory tests for serology diagnosis of brucellosis along with their pros and cons. METHODS: Review the recent literature on brucellosis serology diagnostic tests. The choice of the testing strategy depends on the prevailing brucellosis epidemiological situation and the goal of testing. RESULTS: The 'gold standard' for the diagnosis of brucellosis is isolation and identification of the causative bacterium, a member of Brucella sp. Isolation of Brucella sp. requires high security laboratory facilities (biological containment lev

Brucellosis in northern Australia.

The aim of this study was to define the clinical presentation of brucellosis in northern Australia and to assess the long-term impact of brucellosis on individual lives. A retrospective review was conducted to assess 32 patients with brucellosis caused by Brucella suis in Townsville, Australia during 1996-2009. All patients were Caucasian males with a mean age of 35 years. The greatest risk factor for brucellosis was feral pig hunting (94%, n = 30). There was one laboratory-acquired case. The most frequent clinical features included fever (94%, n = 30), fatigue (78%, n = 25) and arthralgia (78

Rheumatologic manifestations of brucellosis.

Brucellosis, an endemic disease in certain parts of the world is usually accompanied by osteoarticular involvement. The present study was performed to determine the types and frequency of rheumatologic manifestations in patients with brucellosis diagnosed in the north of Iran. Diagnosis of active brucellosis was based on the serological tests along with compatible clinical findings. Musculoskeletal involvement of brucellosis was confirmed by clinical and radiographic examinations; 51 (32 males, 19 females) patients with mean (SD) age of 35 (19) years old were studied. Rheumatological manifesta

Brucellosis in India - a review.

Brucellosis is an important re-emerging zoonosis with a worldwide distribution. It is still an uncontrolled serious public health problem in many developing countries including India. Brucellosis in India is yet a very common but often neglected disease. Currently, Brucella melitensis accounts for most recorded cases globally with cattle emerging as a important reservoir with the few cases of B. suis. Isolated cases of non-terrestrial brucellosis and continuing transmission from wild animals have raised important epidemiological issues. Routine serological surveillance along with high clinical

Brucellosis: a retrospective evaluation.

One hundred and sixty-six presumed brucellosis patients were included in the study. These patients were classified as primary (91), relapse (18) and suspected (57) cases according to their clinical presentations, and serologic and microbiologic test results. Primary and relapse cases were evaluated retrospectively according to age, sex, residence, routes of transmission, clinical and laboratory findings, treatment regimens, duration of treatment, and relapse rates. Of the 109 primary and relapse patients, 57 were male and 52 female. The ages of the patients ranged between 16-75 (mean age 40.2)

Brucellosis and the respiratory system.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease that remains endemic worldwide. Its clinical manifestations and focal complications are often troublesome in making a diagnosis. Involvement of the respiratory system in brucellosis is an acknowledged but rare event that is only occasionally described in literature. We describe 37 cases of respiratory involvement during the course of brucellosis that presented as pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, pleural effusion with a predominance of monocytic or lymphocytic infiltrates, and paroxysmal dry cough. We also discuss aspects of the respiratory pathology, radiological

[Brucellosis--a rare zoonosis].

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a rare infectious disease in Norway. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present a patient admitted to the department of medicine at Haraldsplass Hospital, Bergen and give a review of the epidemiology, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of Brucellosis. RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION: The clinical picture of Brucellosis is often non-specific, with swings in fever, general malaise and myalgia. Complications such as osteomyelitis, endocarditis and coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CNS) infection occur in rare cases. The diagnosis is established by detection of Brucella species in bl

Hearing status in brucellosis.

BACKGROUND: Although brucellosis can lead to multisystem complications, involvement of the ear in brucellosis is rarely reported in the literature. The purpose of this study was to assess the hearing status of patients with brucellosis. STUDY DESIGN: Thirty-two patients with brucellosis were included in the study. Pure tone and speech audiometry and tympanometry were performed in the patients. RESULTS: The mean pure tone averages of the patients were within normal limits and were similar in both ears (P > 0.05). The pure tone averages of the patients with or without anti-Brucella treatment w

Brucellosis in immigrants in Denmark.

Brucellosis is a rarely encountered infection in northern Europe. We report 4 cases of Brucella abortus bacteremia occurring in Denmark during 1999-2000. The clinical presentation was characteristically vague and brucellosis was not suspected by the attending physicians, partly because incomplete patient histories were obtained as a result of language barriers. The diagnosis was finally established by means of blood cultures, which were performed because of fever of unknown origin.

Brucellosis in pregnant women.

Brucella species occasionally cause spontaneous human abortion, but theories regarding whether they do so more frequently than do other infectious pathogens remain controversial. We reviewed 92 pregnant women who presented with acute brucellosis at a Saudi Arabian hospital. From 1983 through 1995, the cumulative incidence of pregnancy and brucellosis was 1.3 cases per 1000 delivered obstetrical discharges. The incidence of spontaneous abortion in the first and second trimesters was 43%, and the incidence of intrauterine fetal death in the third trimester was 2%. Antepartum antimicrobial therap

Brucellosis: a worldwide zoonosis.

Brucella is one of the world's major zoonotic pathogens, and is responsible for enormous economic losses as well as considerable human morbidity in endemic areas. Control of brucellosis requires practical solutions that can be easily applied to the field. Rapid DNA-based diagnostic tests for both humans and livestock have now proved themselves on an experimental level. Data on the virulence of Brucella suggest common mechanisms shared with plant pathogens and endosymbionts of the alpha-proteobacteria. Understanding virulence will have practical repercussions in the realms of vaccine developmen

Treatment of human brucellosis.

Human brucellosis is a multisystem disease that may present with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. The primary goals of therapy for brucellosis are to improve the symptoms, reduce complications and prevent relapses. The choice of a regimen and duration of antimicrobial therapy should be based on the location of the disease and the underlying conditions. The regimen of choice is a combination therapy with doxycycline for 45 days and streptomycin for 14 days. A second-choice consists of a combination of doxycycline and rifampin for 45 days. Children under 8 years old and pregnant wome
