Fixed and Fluid: The Two Faces of Gender Roles-A Combined Study of Activity Patterns and Burial Practices in the European Neolithic.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates gender roles in the European Neolithic by analyzing activity-related skeletal changes (ARSCs) and burial practices at two Polgár microregion sites in Hungary: Polgár-Ferenci-hát (5300-5070 cal. bce) and Polgár-Csőszhalom (4800-4650 cal. bce). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 125 well-preserved adult skeletons were included in the study. Types of ARSCs examined include spondylolysis (overall workload), humeral enthesopathies (unilateral upper-limb overuse), and metatarsal facets (habitual postures). Burial positions and grave goods were analyzed to assess s

Performance of a safe and dignified burial intervention during an Ebola epidemic in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2018-2019.

BACKGROUND: A protracted Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) epidemic in the eastern Ituri, North and South Kivu provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) caused 3470 confirmed and probable cases between July 2018 and April 2020. During the epidemic, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) supported the DRC Red Cross and other local actors to offer safe and dignified burials (SDB) for suspected and confirmed EVD cases, so as to reduce transmission associated with infectious dead bodies. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of the SDB service's performan

[Scientific substantiation of sizes of sanitary protection zones of anthrax burial sites based on the comprehensive evaluation of risk factors].

In the Russian Federation anthrax epizootics are still being registered among animals as well as epidemic foci of the population. This situation is linked to natural reservoirs of the pathogen - numerous anthrax burial sites which belong to class I of dangerous objects. In this connection, a one-kilometer sanitary protective zone is required according to current Russian Federation legislation. As a result, a significant land of the country is unsuitable for any agricultural use. Meanwhile, epizootologo-epidemiological observations indicate to that different anthrax burial sites differ in their

Differential diagnosis of a calcified cyst found in an 18th century female burial site at St. Nicholas Church cemetery (Libkovice, Czechia).

During archaeological excavations in burial sites, sometimes stoned organic objects are found, in addition to human remains. Those objects might be of a different origin, depending on various factors influencing members of a community (i.e. diseases, trauma), which provides information about their living conditions. The St. Nicholas Church archaeological site (Libkovice, Czechia) in the 18th century horizon of the cemetery, yielded a maturus-senilis female skeleton with a stone object in the left iliac fossa. This object was an oviform cyst-like rough structure, measuring 54 mm in length, 35 m

Prolonged critical avalanche burial for nearly 23 h with severe hypothermia and severe frostbite with good recovery: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Accidental hypothermia with severe frostbite is a rare combination of injuries with a high risk for long-term sequelae. There are widely accepted recommendations for the management of avalanche victims and for frostbite treatment, but no recommendation exists for the treatment of frostbite in severe hypothermic patients, specifically for the management of hypothermic avalanche victims presenting with frostbite. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a previously healthy, 53-year-old male skier who was critically buried by an avalanche at 2300 m of altitude at an ambient temperatu

Challenges and facilitators for the implementation of safe and dignified burials during Ebola and Marburg virus disease outbreaks: A scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to map and synthesize the evidence on key challenges, facilitators, and recommendations related to the implementation and community acceptance of safe and dignified burials (SDBs) during outbreaks of Ebola disease (EBOD) or Marburg virus disease (MVD). INTRODUCTION: SDBs are a critical public health intervention designed to reduce post-mortem transmission of EBOD and MVD-two contagious and often fatal diseases-while upholding cultural and religious practices. Despite their importance, challenges to implementation and acceptance have been documented, which m

Evidence of skeletal treponematosis from the medieval burial ground of St. Mary Spital, London, and implications for the origins of the disease in Europe.

Treponematosis is a syndrome of chronic infectious diseases. There has been much debate on its origins and spread, particularly with regard to venereal syphilis, an unsightly and debilitating disease in preantibiotic populations. The osteological analysis of 5,387 individuals excavated by Museum of London Archaeology from the medieval burial ground of St. Mary Spital in London (dated c 1120-1539) provided an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the nature and prevalence of disease over a period of time. Twenty-five individuals were found with suspected treponematosis, originating from all

[Inadequate burials as an important factor in plague epidemic amongst Serbs in the Habsburg monarchy by the end of the 18th century: a historical analysis].

Analysis of the archaic customs of burying the deceased in Srem, primarily amongst Serbs, in the second half of the 18th century is the essential part of the paper that aims at clarifying the consequences of this negative habit onto the spreading of plague epidemic. The Austrian Empire tried to stop and prevent the epidemic with an array of legal norms, but in practice, these orders were often not upheld. Serbian Metropolitans Pavle Nenadović and Stefan Stratimirović insisted on eradicating superstition and retrograde, often uncivilized actions in burial rituals, and they partially succeeded.

London parochial burial records from 1563 to 1665 indicate higher plague death rates for males than females: Some possible demographic and social explanations.

The burial rates of males and females in early modern central London were compared to investigate a possible bias towards male mortality in the plague years of 1563, 1593, 1603, 1625 and 1665. The burial records of sixteen parishes were examined and compared with the five-year periods immediately preceding each plague year when recorded burials were substantially less. A markedly higher burial rate for males was detected in each plague year but this can be partly attributed to a general preponderance of males in the central London population since there was a similar but lesser bias in non-pla

Effect of a safe and dignified burial intervention on Ebola virus transmission in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2018-19: a propensity score analysis.

BACKGROUND: Safe and dignified burial (SDB) is a pillar of the response to epidemics of Ebola virus disease and other diseases caused by pathogens transmissible through contact with corpses. A large epidemic of Ebola virus disease affected eastern DR Congo during 2018-20, throughout which the DR Congo Red Cross and local authorities, with support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, provided SDB services. We aimed to estimate the effect of SDB performance on the transmission of Ebola virus during this epidemic. METHODS: For this quasi-experimental propens

Comparison of spatiotemporal burial and contamination of heavy metals in core sediments of two plateau lakes with contrasting environments: implication for anthropogenic-driven processes.

Investigating the impacts of climatic factors and human activities on sedimentary records of heavy metal (HM) contamination in lakes is essential for decision-making in global environmental monitoring and assessment. Spatiotemporal distributions of grain size (GS) and HM (Al, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb) concentrations have been conducted in core sediments that are collected from two adjacent plateau fault-bound lakes in southwest China with contrasting environments, i.e., deep oligotrophic Lake Fuxian (FX) and shallow hypertrophic Lake Xingyun (XY). Results showed that the average value of

Burial workers' perceptions of community resistance and support systems during an Ebola outbreak in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Community Health Workers (CHWs) provide vital services during disease outbreaks. Appropriate burials of those who died from an infectious disease outbreak is a critical CHW function to prevent infection and disease spread. During the 2018 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Beni Town, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, we sought to understand the levels of understanding, trust, and cooperation of the community in response to the outbreak, the barriers burial workers faced in their health work and its impact on local burial workers and other CHWs. METHODS: 12 EVD buria

Changes in systemic carbon dioxide levels during simulated avalanche burial using a one-way valve device: A randomized, double-blind, crossover trial.

INTRODUCTION: Mortality following complete avalanche burial remains high, primarily due to asphyxiation. Rebreathing-related CO₂ accumulation and oxygen depletion in the air pocket and surrounding snow are considered key mechanisms contributing to asphyxia. Artificial air pocket devices (AAPD) may mitigate this effect by separating exhaled from inhaled air. The present trial aimed to assess this effect in a simulated avalanche burial setting using continuous transcutaneous CO2 monitoring. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, crossover trial, 11 healthy participants (3 female) underwent

Recent Carbon Storage and Burial Exceed Historic Rates in the San Juan Bay Estuary Peri-Urban Mangrove Forests (Puerto Rico, United States).

Mangroves sequester significant quantities of organic carbon (C) because of high rates of burial in the soil and storage in biomass. We estimated mangrove forest C storage and accumulation rates in aboveground and belowground components among five sites along an urbanization gradient in the San Juan Bay Estuary, Puerto Rico. Sites included the highly urbanized and clogged Caño Martin Peña in the western half of the estuary, a series of lagoons in the center of the estuary, and a tropical forest reserve (Piñones) in the easternmost part. Radiometrically dated cores were used to determine sedime

Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement responses to viral hemorrhagic fever outbreaks: A mixed-method evaluation of information management practices for Safe and Dignified Burials.

BACKGROUND: Ebola and Marburg are viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) with pronounced epidemic potential. Safe and Dignified Burials (SDBs) are a key pillar of humanitarian responses to VHF outbreaks, with Red Cross and Red Crescent (RCRC) National Societies often supporting implementation. The SDB information management (IM) toolkit is a collection of tools and templates that provides guidance for SDB IM across the RCRC Movement. OBJECTIVE: To identify lessons learned from the implementation of the SDB IM toolkit and the broader approach to SDB IM in the RCRC Movement, focusing on acceptability,
