The effects of performance-based financing on neonatal health outcomes in Burundi, Lesotho, Senegal, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Maternal and newborn care has been a primary focus of performance-based financing (PBF) projects, which have been piloted or implemented in 21 countries in sub-Saharan Africa since 2007. Several evaluations of PBF have demonstrated improvements to facility delivery or quality of care. However, no studies have measured the impact of PBF programmes directly on neonatal health outcomes in Africa, nor compared PBF programmes against another. We assess the impact of PBF on early neonatal health outcomes and associated health care utilization and quality in Burundi, Lesotho, Senegal, Zambia and Zimb

Capacity gaps in health facilities for case management of intestinal schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Burundi.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are endemic diseases in Burundi. STH control is integrated into health facilities (HF) across the country, but schistosomiasis control is not. The present study aimed to assess the capacity of HF for integrating intestinal schistosomiasis case management into their routine activities. In addition, the current capacity for HF-based STH case management was evaluated. METHODS: A random cluster survey was carried out in July 2014, in 65 HF located in Schistosoma mansoni and STH endemic areas. Data were collected by semi-quantita

A comparative analysis of the cost-effectiveness of treatment based on parasitological and symptomatic screening for Schistosoma mansoni in Burundi.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the cost-effectiveness of three alternative screening strategies in delivering treatment to patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of S. mansoni, using data collected from 17 PHCCs in the Rusizi Plain, Burundi. The three strategies were: (1) screening all symptomatic patients using a Kato-Katz smear and treating only the ones found positive; (2) treating all symptomatic patients or (3) treating only those presenting with symptoms of severe diarrhoea (blood in stool). METHODS: The database consisted of 41 051 visits of symptomatic patients to the 17 PHCCs during 199

Beyond knowledge acquisition: factors influencing family planning utilization among women in conservative communities in Rural Burundi.

BACKGROUND: With a fertility rate of 5.4 children per woman, Burundi ranked as seventh country with the highest fertility rate in the world. Family planning is an effective way of achieving desirable family size, appropriate birth spacing and significant reduction in unintended pregnancies. Furthermore, family planning has been linked to improvements in maternal health outcomes. Yet, in spite of the overwhelming evidence on the benefits of family planning and despite high knowledge and free services, utilisation is low especially in rural communities with conservative people. Employing a mixed

Epidemiological and molecular characterization of Rift Valley fever outbreak in livestock in Burundi, May - November 2022.

An outbreak of Rift Valley fever (RVF) was officially reported for the first time in Burundi on 10th May 2022. The outbreak originated in the northern provinces and progressively spread to other regions of the country. This study presents (i) epidemiological investigations that were carried out through a countrywide emergency response and (ii) the characterization of the genotype of the RVF virus that caused the outbreak through phylogenetic analyses. Field teams visited each affected farm, collected data on observed syndromes, species and number of animals affected, farm's locations, and herd

Treatment of onchocerciasis with ivermectin (Province of Bururi, Burundi): parasitologic and clinical evaluation of different periodicities of treatment.

To find out whether biannual treatments of onchocerciasis with ivermectin were necessary or whether annual treatments could suffice, parasitologic and clinical results in Burundi were compared at 12 months after a single treatment and after two treatments with an interval of six months. Adverse reactions were also compared at 12 months, after a second or third treatment, respectively. The biannual treatment resulted in a greater reduction of parasitologic parameters, had a longer-lasting effect on itching, and produced less side effects (especially itching, rash, and swellings) at 12 months th

Prognostic indicators in adult cerebral malaria: a study in Burundi, an area of high prevalence of HIV infection.

We examined the possible risk factors for poor prognostic in cerebral malaria in 31 adults from Burundi, an area of high prevalence rate of HIV-1 infection. Depth of coma, temperature, vomiting, seizures, parasite load, or anaemia did not modify the outcome. High levels of creatinine, bilirubin, and/or lactates were indicators of poor prognostic. HIV-1 infection did not affect the clinical or biological presentation of cerebral malaria, and did not appear to influence the outcome.

Prevalence of chronic kidney disease among people living with HIV/AIDS in Burundi: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Since little is known about chronic kidney disease (CKD) among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Sub-Saharan Africa, the prevalence and nature of CKD were assessed in Burundi through a multicenter cross-sectional study. METHODS: Patients underwent assessments at baseline and 3 months later. Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) was estimated using abbreviated 4-variable Modification of Diet in Renal Diseases (MDRD) and Cockroft-Gault estimation methods. Patients were classified at month 3 into various CKD stages using the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) definition, which combines

[Trypanosoma rhodesiense African human trypanosomiasis foci in Burundi (vector : Glossina morsitans). Historic and present aspects (author's transl)].

From 1954, Trypanosoma rhodesiense trypanosomiasis affects North East Burundi in an endemic way. However, for two years (1979-1980) in spite of a constant monitoring, no new trypanosomiasic patient has been detected. The author, in order to appreciate the epidemiological prospects, reviews the history of trypanosomiasis in Burundi and considers the role of the geographical environment, the socio-economic changes and the various attempts to control the disease. Nowadays the existence of animal reservoirs is not proved and the human reservoir seems almost in existant. The vector still exists and

Understanding perceptions of malaria control measures in Burundi: a qualitative descriptive study using a socio-ecological approach.

BACKGROUND: In Burundi, malaria remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality and persists as a major public health problem despite control strategies implemented nationally since 2000. While some quantitative studies have evaluated specific interventions, qualitative research examining the perceptions and practices of target populations regarding prevention measures is lacking. Such research is particularly important in the current context, where multiple control strategies are simultaneously implemented, potentially leading to confusion or reluctance among the population to adhere to
