Preventive and therapeutic effects of caffeic acid against inflammatory injury in striatum of MPTP-treated mice.

Preventive or therapeutic effects of caffeic acid in brain of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) treated mice against inflammatory injury were examined. Caffeic acid at 0.5, 1 or 2% was supplied either pre-intake or post-intake for 4 weeks. Brain caffeic acid content was increased by caffeic acid pre-intake at 1 and 2%, and post-intake at 2% (P < 0.05). MPTP treatment enhanced the release of interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, IL-4 and IL-10 (P < 0.05). Pre-intake of caffeic acid decreased the production of test cytokines (P < 0.05); however, post-

Protective effect of caffeic acid phenethyl ester against carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in mice.

This study was designed to investigate the protective effects of the phenethyl ester of caffeic acid (CAPE) against carbon tetrachoride (CCl(4))-induced hepatotoxicities in mice. Pretreatment with CAPE prior to administration of CCl(4) significantly prevented the increases in serum alanine, aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities, hepatic lipid peroxidation formation, and depletion of glutathione content. In addition, CAPE prevented CCl(4)-induced apoptosis and necrosis, as indicated by liver histopathology and DNA laddering studies. To determine whether the Fas/Fas liga

Protective effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester on skeletal muscle ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.

There is a great evidence that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in the pathophysiology of ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in skeletal muscle. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is a component of honeybee propolis. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenger properties. The aim of this study is to determine the protective effects of CAPE against I/R injury in respect of protein oxidation, neutrophil in filtration, and the activities of xanthine oxidase (XO) and adenosine deaminase (AD) on an in vivo model of skeletal muscle I/R injury. Rats were divid

Neuroprotective effects of curcumin, memantine, and caffeic acid in a Rat model of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury leads to neuronal loss through oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. Curcumin, memantine, and caffeic acid possess antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. This study compared their efficacy in a rat model of transient cerebral ischemia. Forty male Wistar albino rats were initially allocated into six experimental groups; however, the vehicle control group was excluded from statistical analyses, and data are presented for five groups (n = 8 per group): sham, ischemia-reperfusion (I/R), I/R + curcumin (300 mg/kg/day), I/R + memantine (10 mg/

A novel factorial design implemented spectrofluorimetric determination of caffeic acid: individual and combined assays with curcumin.

In this research, we developed, for the first time, sensitive, selective, and reliable spectrofluorimetric methods for the quantitative analysis of caffeic acid (CAF) alone and in combination with curcumin (CUR). Two fluorimetric methods were established for the determination of CAF alone; a native fluorescence method (Method I) was optimized using 23 factorial model, exploiting the compound's intrinsic fluorescence properties. The excitation and emission wavelengths were set at λex/λem = [324/443] nm. For the simultaneous analysis of CAF and CUR, the synchronous fluorescence (SF) technique wa

Caffeic acid attenuates stress-induced colon inflammation and barrier disruption in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Chronic stress promotes colonic inflammation by sustaining activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, inducing oxidative stress, and disrupting barrier integrity, thereby exacerbating inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Therefore, there is a need for therapeutic compounds that can ameliorate stress-induced colonic inflammation. Caffeic acid (CA), a naturally occurring polyphenol found in coffee and tea, has shown potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This study evaluated the effect of CA in a chronic unpredictable stress (CUS)-induced co

Evaluation of anti-allergic properties of caffeic acid phenethyl ester in a murine model of systemic anaphylaxis.

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is an active component of honeybee propolis extracts. It has several positive effects, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidation, anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and immunomodulatory effects. In particular, the suppressive effect of NF-kappaB may disrupt a component of allergic induction. The principal objective of this experimental study was to evaluate the effects of CAPE on the active systemic anaphylaxis induced by ovalbumin (OVA) challenge in mice. Mice were intraperitoneally sensitized and intravenously challenged with OVA. Hist

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester suppresses oxidative stress in Escherichia coli-induced pyelonephritis in rats.

Although oxidative damage is known to be involved in inflammatory-mediated tissue destruction, modulation of oxygen free radical production represents a new approach to the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), an active component of propolis from honeybee hives, has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. For that reason, we aimed to investigate the efficiency of CAPE administration in preventing oxidative damage in pyelonephritis (PYN) caused by Escherichia coli. In this study, 35 Wistar rats were grouped as follows: control, PYN 24 h,

Janus-Structured Poly(Lipoic Acid-co-Caffeic Acid) Patch for Asymmetric Underwater Adhesion in Sutureless Gastric Perforation Treatment.

Bioadhesives for internal organ repair suffer from weak underwater adhesion, poor mechanical compatibility and indiscriminate tissue adhesion. Herein, we report the synthesis of poly(lipoic acid-co-caffeic acid) (poly(LA-CA)) exhibiting tunable adhesive and mechanical properties according to the polymer configuration. By copolymerization of caffeic acid, thermal polymerization of lipoic acid yields branched copolymer of poly(LA-CA), which is viscous and highly adhesive in wet conditions, while radical polymerization initiated by ammonium persulphate produces elastic and non-adhesive linear pol

Physicochemical characterization, release profile, and antibacterial mechanisms of caffeic acid phenethyl ester loaded in lipid nanocapsules with lauric acid and glycerol monolaurate.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the biological activities of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), including antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the application of CAPE is limited by its low bioavailability and stability. In this work, we designed a CAPE loaded nanocapsule system by using polyoxyl-15-hydroxystearate, coconut oil and lecithin (LE)/lauric acid (LA)/glycerol monolaurate (GML) to improve the release rate of CAPE. The Blank-GML-lipid nanocapsules (BK-GML) and CAPE loaded BK-GML (CAPE-GML) were mainly assembled by hydrophobic forces and electrost
