Caffeine dependence in combination with a family history of alcoholism as a predictor of continued use of caffeine during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to examine whether caffeine dependence and a family history of alcoholism are associated with continued use of caffeine during pregnancy. METHOD: Forty-four women seeking obstetrical care in an office-based practice completed questionnaires and provided saliva samples at three prenatal visits occurring 2-3, 3-4, and 7 months postconception. On visit 1, the patients received the physician's instructions to stop using caffeine. Structured interviews were used to assign a diagnosis of caffeine dependence (lifetime) and to identify family history of alcohol

Caffeine Consumption and Rhinologic Symptom Severity.

Caffeine is the most widely consumed habit-forming drug in the world. A relationship has been proposed between caffeine consumption and rhinologic symptoms. To determine whether the potential deleterious effects of caffeine withdrawal are outweighed by the rhinologic symptom benefits, our group conducted a prospective study of patients presenting with rhinologic complaints at local clinics. Rhinologic symptom severity was assessed using the SNOT-22 and the frequency and quantity of daily caffeine consumption was assessed by questionnaire. A total of 226 participants completed the study. No cor

Maternal Caffeine Consumption and Pregnancy Outcomes.

Caffeine, a habit-forming substance of no nutritional value, is consumed daily by most pregnant women. This focused narrative review examines evidence of association between maternal caffeine consumption and negative pregnancy outcomes, and assesses whether current advice guidelines are consistent with the available evidence. The majority finding from original empirical studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses is that maternal consumption of caffeine is reliably associated with serious negative pregnancy outcomes and negative outcomes in offspring. Evidence of harm is strong for miscarri

Caffeine-induced hypokalemia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: With an increase in the global popularity of coffee, caffeine is one of the most consumed ingredients of modern times. However, the consumption of massive amounts of caffeine can lead to severe hypokalemia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old man without a specific past medical history was admitted to our hospital with recurrent episodes of sudden and severe lower-extremity weakness. Laboratory tests revealed low serum potassium concentration (2.6-2.9 mmol/L) and low urine osmolality (100-130 mOsm/kgH2O) in three such prior episodes. Urinary potassium/urinary creatinine ratio was 12

Tinnitus features according to caffeine consumption.

INTRODUCTION: Consumption of high amounts of caffeine has been historically associated with tinnitus worsening. However, recent studies demonstrated that this seems not to be true, and caffeine may even improve tinnitus distress. AIM: To analyze tinnitus features according to caffeine consumption levels. STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study. METHOD: Tinnitus patients were compared with patients without tinnitus concerning caffeine consumption. Tinnitus characteristics were correlated to the amount of caffeine consumption among the tinnitus patients. RESULTS: One hundred and forty two patients

Caffeine, mental health, and psychiatric disorders.

Caffeine intake is so common that its pharmacological effects on the mind are undervalued. Since it is so readily available, individuals can adjust their own dose, time of administration and dose intervals of caffeine, according to the perceived benefits and side effects of each dose. This review focuses on human studies of caffeine in subjects with and without psychiatric disorders. Besides the possibility of mild drug dependence, caffeine may bring benefits that contribute to its widespread use. These benefits seem to be related to adaptation of mental energy to the context by increasing ale

[HPLC determination of five caffeine metabolites].

An HPLC method for the determination of caffeine metabolites in urine was established. Shim Pack CLC-ODS column (5 microns) was eluted with the mobile phase of methanol--acetonitrile--0.05% acetic acid = 12:1:87 (v/v) at a flow rate of 1.2 ml.min-1, and the ultraviolet absorbance was monitored at 280 nm. The 13 caffeine metabolites and caffeine were well separated and the concentrations of the five metabolites, AFMU, 1U, 1X, 17U, and 17X, were determined. The recoveries of the five metabolites were above 87%, the inter- and intra-day variations were less than 3%. The concentrations of the five

Caffeine consumption in hospitalized psychiatric patients.

A total of 98 consecutively admitted psychiatric inpatients were asked for their daily consumption of coffee, tea and other products containing caffeine. Calculation of the corresponding daily caffeine intake was performed using data from the literature and from caffeine measurements carried out in different coffee and tea preparations in the hospital. Of the patients 13% presented a high (> or = 750 mg daily) caffeine consumption before hospitalization. The average caffeine consumption per day decreased from 405 mg before to 332 mg during hospitalization (P < 0.04), but the before and during

Caffeine potentiates vasodilator-induced renin release.

Previous studies strongly suggest that adenosine receptors on juxtaglomerular cells function to restrain the secretion of renin induced by a variety of stimuli. The clinical significance of this is that caffeine, a widely consumed adenosine receptor antagonist, could augment renin release responses to diseases such as renovascular hypertension, liver cirrhosis and heart failure and to therapeutic maneuvers such as salt restriction, diuretics and vasodilators. Caffeine may be particularly troublesome in this regard because this methylxanthine has central nervous system effects and intracellular

Phenylpropanolamine potentiates caffeine neurotoxicity in rats.

Numerous case reports have documented that phenylpropanolamine (PPA) stimulates the central nervous system with symptoms ranging from anxiety and hallucinations to grand mal seizures produced by overdoses. Most of these reports have occurred following concomitant use of caffeine which in high doses is known to cause seizures and psychotic episodes. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if PPA could potentiate caffeine-induced seizures in the rat. First, the input rate dependence of caffeine-induced neurotoxicity was determined by infusing rats intravenously with caffeine at one of

Caffeine-cigarette interaction on fetal growth.

The influence of caffeine and cigarette consumption on fetal growth during pregnancy was studied retrospectively in 913 newborn infants. Analysis of variance was adjusted for length of gestation and sex. A significant caffeine-cigarette interaction was found on birth weight (F = 85.4, p less than 0.01). Among women smoking 15 cigarettes or more per day, birth weight was 206 gm (+/- 57.7 gm) lighter for babies whose mothers consumed 300 mg or more of caffeine per day. Head circumference and length of the newborns were affected only by cigarette smoking. Another caffeine-cigarette interaction wa

Unsuspected caffeine toxicity complicating theophylline therapy.

A 58-year-old man with a history of alcoholic liver disease and chronic airflow obstruction presented with heart failure and acute bronchitis. Plasma methylxanthines were estimated as a guide to further theophylline therapy and serious caffeine accumulation was noted in the presence of a subtherapeutic concentration of theophylline. After 3 weeks on a caffeine-free diet theophylline and caffeine challenge tests were performed which demonstrated the ease with which caffeine could accumulate. The importance of caffeine accumulation during theophylline therapy is discussed.

Adsorption of caffeine using steel wastes.

Caffeine is the most widespread active pharmaceutical compound in the world, generally studied as a tracer of human pollution, since caffeine levels in surface water correlate with the anthropogenic load of domestic wastewater. This work investigated the use of different steel wastes named as SW-I, SW-II, SW-II, SW-IV, SW-V, and SW-VI in the adsorption of caffeine. These materials were pretreated and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and point of zero charge. The samples are mainly composed of iron (hematite and magnetite

Neurodevelopmental outcomes after neonatal caffeine therapy.

Improving the adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes associated with prematurity is a priority. In the large international Caffeine for Apnea of Prematurity trial, caffeine improved survival without neurodevelopmental disability at 18 months and demonstrated long term safety up to 11 years. Caffeine is an adenosine receptor antagonist with effects on the brain, lung and other systems. The benefits of caffeine may be primary neuroprotection or reduction of risk factors for impairment, especially bronchopulmonary dysplasia. The effects of caffeine vary with age and dose. Animal data show risks of l

Caffeine-halothane accuracy in MH testing.

The accuracy and stability of caffeine and halothane concentrations in liquid Krebs medium were examined. Caffeine-Krebs Ringer's solution in incremental concentrations from 0.25 to 10 mM (N = 8 for each concentration) was serially assayed over a three-year period. Storage was at 4 degrees C. For serial testing of halothane during a five month period, halothane 1% or 3% in carbogen was bubbled through a Krebs solution, contained in muscle baths, either using a roller pump (to eliminate vaporizer back pressure) or using carbogen at a line pressure of 4-6 lbs/in2 (27-41 kPa). Halothane in Krebs

[Caffeine plus analgesics-a significant combination.].

Since the ban of phenacetin and barbiturates in analgesics, caffeine as a constituent of analgesics has recently more often been blamed for promoting the abuse of analgesics. The available relevant literature was reviewed to perform a benefit/risk analysis. The results were as follows. The capability of caffeine to potentiate analgesia was demonstrated in controlled clinical trials involving approximately 12000 patients. This effect does not mean that there is a stronger analgesic effect, but that the addition of caffeine allows to reduce the dose of analgesics significantly, while maintaining
