BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening condition involving painful necrotic skin ulcerations, especially of the lower extremities. It is generally associated with chronic kidney failure but may be seen in nonuremic cases.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of calciphylaxis in a 60-year-old man with diabetes on dialysis for end-stage renal disease and known to have other typical combination of risk factors associated with calciphylaxis syndrome. On examination, he presented with multiple intensely painful calciphylaxis wounds on his legs and ankles. Despite regular wound manage

Calciphylaxis is a rare painful skin condition classically seen in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), particularly those on chronic dialysis; however, it also has been increasingly reported in patients with normal renal function. Calciphylaxis is associated with high mortality rates, and excruciating pain and nonhealing ulcers often lead to recurrent hospitalizations and infectious complications. It is critical for dermatologists to recognize the clinical features of calciphylaxis to ensure accurate and timely diagnosis and proper management. In this article, we provide an update on

INTRODUCTION: Calciphylaxis is a rare but devastating disease with a mortality rate up to 50% in 1 year. It is characterized by profoundly painful ischemic skin lesions and vascular calcification that affects predominantly patients with end stage renal disease. The use of certain medications is an important modifiable risk factor in calciphylaxis and discontinuation of these is a mainstay of treatment.
AREAS COVERED: This review will provide an overview of calciphylaxis and will focus on how certain therapeutic agents can affect the risk of calcification and associated thrombosis, key process

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis, also called calcific uremic arteriolopathy, is a highly morbid syndrome characterized by calcium deposition and occlusion of small arterial vessels of the dermis and subdermal adipose tissue, leading to necrosis and gangrene. Penile involvement is rare and its management presents considerable challenges.
CASE: We review the case of a 47-year-old man with end-stage renal disease managed with hemodialysis, diabetes mellitus, and urinary incontinence who presented with a painful necrotic lesion on his glans penis, and the second and third toes of his right foot. Follow

This is a rare case of penile and generalised calciphylaxis. We describe the case of a patient admitted to our hospital for septic shock and necrotic skin findings, end-stage renal disease on peritoneal dialysis. Skin findings turned out to be calciphyactic lesions. The patient was taken to the operating room for penile debridement and started on antibiotics. He was treated with sodium thiosulfate and switched to haemodialysis. Calciphylaxis is a rare disease in which the treatment is basically supportive. Further studies are needed to identify the risk factors, mechanisms of disease and treat

Calciphylaxis is most common in patients with end-stage renal disease, and hyperparathyroidism is often present as well. But several cases in patients with normal renal and parathyroid function have been reported; this article describes one such case. The etiology and pathophysiology of calciphylaxis aren't well understood. There are many risk factors, and the reported median survival time is 2.6 months after diagnosis. The condition is characterized by isolated or multiple lesions that progress to firm, nonulcerated plaques and then to ischemic skin necrosis and ulceration. In August 2010, a

IMPORTANCE: Calciphylaxis is a potentially fatal disorder of abnormal calcium deposition. Patients commonly present with painful retiform to stellate purpuric lesions that often undergo ulceration and necrosis, increasing the risk of infection and life-threatening sepsis. Treatment is multifaceted, and improved outcomes have been demonstrated with intravenous sodium thiosulfate; however, the use of this medication can be limited by its adverse effects. The use of topical sodium thiosulfate has been successfully reported for superficial calcium deposits in the skin from other processes. Therefo

Calciphylaxis is an infrequent but severe entity found in chronic dialysis patients. Its clinical pattern consists of tissue ischemia with itchy and painful subcutaneous nodules and plaques, most often located on the abdomen, buttocks, thighs and/or legs. These injuries evolve to extensive superficial necrosis of the skin overlying the panniculitis, with ulceration, overinfection and consequent sepsis. Current treatment modalities used to counteract this pathology are not entirely effective. A new treatment reported for calciphylaxis, is the use of intravenous sodium thiosulfate. This inorgani

Calciphylaxis is a dreaded complication of chronic renal failure characterized by nodular subcutaneous calcification and pain. Full tissue necrosis often leads to ulceration, secondary infection and high mortality rate. We herewith present a 65-year-old Saudi gentleman who presented with multiple necrotic skin lesions of both proximal and distal distribution. Skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of calciphylaxis. Patient was started on sevelamer hydrochloride and low calcium dialysate to which he responded dramatically without the need for parathyroidectomy. To our knowledge, this is the first

Calcific uremic arteriolopathy (or calciphylaxis) is a severe complication of renal failure characterized by subcutaneous calcification of the small arteries and tissue necrosis. We describe the case of a woman receiving continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis with calciphylaxis involving upper and lower extremities. After intolerance of intravenous sodium thiosulfate and limited intravenous access options, we administered sodium thiosulfate intraperitoneally and quantitated the amount of extra calcium removed. Intraperitoneal administration of sodium thiosulfate was well tolerated and led to r

Calciphylaxis is a relatively rare, but horribly disfiguring, skin condition that is most often associated with end-stage renal disease and long-term dialysis. Unfortunately, calciphylaxis-related morbidity and mortality are significant. The case study presented demonstrates many of the findings associated with the typical calciphylaxis patient; end-stage renal disease and an extensive, painful ulcer. The complexity of the patient s history and medical/surgical interventions, especially medication therapy with coumadin and heparin, complicated initial diagnostic processes. Close scrutiny of mu

Calciphylaxis is a rare disorder in patients with chronic renal failure that is characterized by ischemic necrotic skin lesions. The prognosis is grave and mortality is high (80%). The precise mechanism of calciphylaxis is still unknown, but in addition to chronic renal failure, elevated parathyroid hormone levels appear to play a role. The role of parathyroidectomy in treating affected patients is questionable. In this article, we describe the case of a patient with chronic renal failure who developed rapidly progressive subcutaneous calcifications and ulcerations in the lower extremities. Th

Calciphylaxis is an uncommon but serious disease process that affects mainly patients with advanced renal failure. Calciphylaxis is characterized by dermal arteriolar calcification that leads to skin ulceration, necrosis, ischemia and secondary infection. The pathogenesis is poorly understood, although the calcium phosphorus product has been proposed as a major cause. Given the high morbidity and mortality rate, emphasis should be placed on prevention and early diagnosis of vascular calcification, as well as in prophylaxis of secondary infection. We present changing concepts in four patients r

The assessment of any patient for possible vasculitis includes a thorough evaluation for other conditions that mimic vasculitis, particularly those in which corticosteroid and immunosuppressive treatment may be more harmful than beneficial. Calciphylaxis, which may be more common than previously recognized, is a syndrome associated with the development of painful skin nodules, often in a livedo reticularis pattern, skin necrosis and ulceration, myalgias, and elevated creatine kinase levels. Usually found in patients with chronic renal failure, the pathology is a distinctive mural calcification

Calciphylaxis is a special form of soft tissue calcification (in particular blood vessels), affecting specially patients with chronic renal insufficiency and associated secondary hyperparathyroidism. Most severely affected are small arteries with a diameter of 0.2-0.5 mm at the interface of the corium and subcutaneous layer. Calcification of the vascular media with subsequent narrowing of the lumen causes ischaemic changes manifested by the development of painful reddish-violet spots on the skin with necrosis and ulcerations. The authors describe the case of a 73-year-old diabetic female patie

A woman in her 40s with haemodialysis-dependent end-stage renal disease presented to our emergency department with severe bilateral lower extremity pain with erythema and oedema. Bedside ultrasound was inconclusive and further imaging was delayed due to significant patient discomfort during bed transfers. Ultimately, this patient was suspected to have calciphylaxis after a successful CT scan with premedication due to significant subcutaneous tissue calcification. Her diagnosis was confirmed with tissue punch biopsy. Her first pathological skin lesion presented at the biopsy site, and the patie

INTRODUCTION: Calciphylaxis is a rare and severe disorder characterized by obstructive small vessel disease in the subcutaneous adipose tissue and skin, leading to necrotic skin lesions. The condition poses a significant risk of mortality due to infectious and ischemic complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 60-year-old woman, with a history of renal lithiasis, hypertension, and end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis complicated by hyperparathyroidism and aortic valve replacement. She developed extensive necrotic lesions on both lower limbs and upper extremities, prompting
