Development of parathyroid gland hyperplasia without uremia: role of dietary calcium and phosphate.

Background. Many experimental studies have demonstrated that parathyroid cell proliferation is induced by uremia and further aggravated by hypocalcemia, phosphorus retention and vitamin D deficiency. However, these factors may also promote parathyroid growth without uremia. In the present study, we examined the onset and progression of parathyroid hyperplasia regardless of the uremic setting, a situation that might occur soon during the early renal disease. Thus, the novelty of this work resides in the close examination of the time course for the expected changes in proliferation rates and the

Adequate dietary calcium mitigates osteopenia induced by chronic lead exposure in adult rats.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate bone changes in the adult rat exposed to low lead levels during intake of normal dietary calcium and to contrast these findings with data from our earlier studies performed with animals receiving low dietary calcium concurrent with lead exposure. The present study exposed adult rats to 100 ppm lead via drinking water for 12 weeks and assessed bone histology, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, 25(OH)vitamin D and parathyroid hormone levels. No osteopenia was evident by quantitative bone histology, and circulating levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, 25(OH

Lauric Acid, a Dietary Saturated Medium-Chain Fatty Acid, Elicits Calcium-Dependent Eryptosis.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a leading cause of mortality worldwide, and dietary habits represent a major risk factor for dyslipidemia; a hallmark of CVD. Saturated fatty acids contribute to CVD by aggravating dyslipidemia, and, in particular, lauric acid (LA) raises circulating cholesterol levels. The role of red blood cells (RBCs) in CVD is increasingly being appreciated, and eryptosis has recently been identified as a novel mechanism in CVD. However, the effect of LA on RBC physiology has not been thoroughly investigated. RBCs were isolated from heparin-anticoagulated whole blood (WB)

Dietary Calcium Intake and Bone Loss Over 6 Years in Osteopenic Postmenopausal Women.

CONTEXT: Calcium intakes are commonly lower than the recommended levels, and increasing calcium intake is often recommended for bone health. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between dietary calcium intake and rate of bone loss in older postmenopausal women. PARTICIPANTS: Analysis of observational data collected from a randomized controlled trial. Participants were osteopenic (hip T-scores between -1.0 and -2.5) women, aged >65 years, not receiving therapy for osteoporosis nor taking calcium supplements. Women from the total cohort (n = 1994) contributed data to the analysis of calciu

Dietary protein and calcium modulate parathyroid vitamin D receptor expression in young ruminants.

For economic reasons and in order to minimize nitrogen excretion and thus pollution, the crude protein content in the diet of livestock animals should be as low as possible without negatively affecting the animals´ health and performance. As ruminants can efficiently use dietary protein because of the ruminohepatic circulation of urea, they are considered to cope more easily with such a feeding regime than monogastric animals. However, despite unaltered daily weight gain, massive changes in mineral homeostasis and vitamin D metabolism were observed with dietary protein reduction (N-) in young,

Association of dietary calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium intake with caries status among schoolchildren.

The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between caries experience and daily intake of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), and Ca/P ratio. A total of 2248 schoolchildren were recruited based on a population-based survey. Each participant received a dental examination and questionnaire interviews about the 24-hour dietary recalls and food frequency. The daily intake of Ca, P, Mg, and Ca/P ratio were inversely associated with primary caries index, but only the Ca/P ratio remained significant after adjusting for potential confounders. According to the Taiwanese Dietary

Dietary fructose inhibits intestinal calcium absorption and induces vitamin D insufficiency in CKD.

Renal disease leads to perturbations in calcium and phosphate homeostasis and vitamin D metabolism. Dietary fructose aggravates chronic kidney disease (CKD), but whether it also worsens CKD-induced derangements in calcium and phosphate homeostasis is unknown. Here, we fed rats diets containing 60% glucose or fructose for 1 mo beginning 6 wk after 5/6 nephrectomy or sham operation. Nephrectomized rats had markedly greater kidney weight, blood urea nitrogen, and serum levels of creatinine, phosphate, and calcium-phosphate product; dietary fructose significantly exacerbated all of these outcomes.

Milk, dairy fat, dietary calcium, and weight gain: a longitudinal study of adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Milk is promoted as a healthy beverage for children, but some researchers believe that estrone and whey protein in dairy products may cause weight gain. Others claim that dairy calcium promotes weight loss. OBJECTIVE: To assess the associations between milk, calcium from foods and beverages, dairy fat, and weight change over time.Design, Subjects, and Outcome Measure We followed a cohort of 12 829 US children, aged 9 to 14 years in 1996, who returned questionnaires by mail through 1999. Children annually reported their height and weight and completed food frequency questionnaires

Dietary calcium deficiency increases Ca2+ uptake and Ca2+ extrusion mechanisms in chick enterocytes.

Ca2+ uptake and Ca2+ extrusion mechanisms were studied in enterocytes with different degree of differentiation from chicks adapted to a low Ca2+ diet as compared to animals fed a normal diet. Chicks adapted to a low Ca2+ diet presented hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia and increased serum 1,25(OH)2D3 and Ca2+ absorption. Low Ca2+ diet increased the alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity, independently of the cellular maturation, but it did not alter gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase activity. Ca2+ uptake, Ca2+-ATPase and Na(+)/Ca2+ exchanger activities and expressions were increased by the mineral-defici

Effect of dietary phosphorus and calcium depletion-repletion on pig performance and bone quality.

Feeding strategies such as P and Ca depletion and repletion have been proposed to reduce the use of phosphate or improve P utilisation efficiency in pig diets, thereby contributing to the sustainability of the sector. A total of 48 entire male pigs (18.47 ± 3.18 kg BW) were fed a control diet (C = 100% of requirements) and a restricted diet (R = 80-90% of digestive requirements of P and Ca, respectively) in three growth phases, with the following feeding strategies: CCC, RCC, RRC and RRR. At each phase, growth performance and bone characteristics (proportion of low-, medium-, high- and very hi

High dietary calcium to phosphorus ratio is associated with high prevalence of kidney stone.

Kidney stones formation is a multifactorial condition and influenced, in some degree, by dietary habits. Authoritative clinical guidelines published nutritional recommendations for individuals prone to kidney stone formation. The association between dietary intake calcium to phosphorus (Ca/P) ratios and the prevalence of kidney stones is not well-established in extensive epidemiological studies. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017 to 2018 database were utilized in this study. A total of 3 149 participants with a history of kidney stones were enrolled in the pres

Bone resorption and dietary calcium in pregnancy-a window to future maternal bone health.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is characterized by increased bone turnover and reversible loss of bone mineral density (BMD) to meet fetal calcium demands. The long-term effect of bone turnover and maternal diet in pregnancy on maternal bone is not well established. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine if an association exists between [1] bone resorption, [2] dietary calcium, and [3] serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D in pregnancy with maternal BMD 5-year postpartum. DESIGN: This is a prospective, longitudinal study of 107 women recruited to the ROLO low glycemic index dietary intervention trial in pregnancy and

Effects of Dietary Phosphorus Level on the Expression of Calcium and Phosphorus Transporters in Laying Hens.

The transport of calcium and phosphorus is mainly relied on their corresponding transporters. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dietary phosphorus level on the expression of the relevant calcium and phosphorus transporters in laying hens, which has a large amount of calcium and phosphorus input from intestine and output from kidney and eggshell gland. Thirty-six 25-week-old Hy-line Brown hens were fed diets with different available phosphorus level (AP, 0.15, 0.41, and 0.82%), respectively. The expression of phosphorus transporters type IIa and type IIb Na/Pi co-transporter

Preventing oxidative stress in rats with aldosteronism by calcitriol and dietary calcium and magnesium supplements.

BACKGROUND: Prominent features of the clinical syndrome of congestive heart failure (CHF) include aldosteronism and the presence of oxidative stress. Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) accompanies aldosteronism due to increased urinary and fecal excretion of Ca. SHPT accounts for intracellular Ca overloading of diverse cells, including peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and the appearance of oxidative stress. Parathyroidectomy or a Ca channel blocker each prevent these responses. Herein, we hypothesized calcitriol, or 1,25(OH)2D3, plus a diet supplemented with Ca and Mg (CMD) would p

Diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infection of humans is inhibited by dietary calcium.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In several rat infection experiments, we have shown that dietary calcium inhibits intestinal colonization and translocation of invasive salmonella. The aim of the present study was to find out whether calcium is also protective against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infection. This was first tested in our rat model and subsequently verified in a human infection study. METHODS: Rats were fed a purified diet with either a low or a high amount of calcium phosphate and orally infected with ETEC. In addition, a parallel, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention stu

Skeletal sensitivity to dietary calcium deficiency is increased in the female compared with the male rat.

We investigated potential sex differences in bone resorption and the conservation of whole body bone mass in 24-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats maintained on a 1.0% calcium diet and then fed diets containing 0.02, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.75% calcium for 31 days. Lowering dietary calcium from 1.00% to 0.02% doubled whole skeleton bone resorption (urinary 3H-tetracycline loss). Female rats were more sensitive to calcium stress, exhibiting the maximal resorptive response when fed the 0.5% calcium diet, whereas the 0.02% calcium diet was required to elicit this response in males. Despite the evidence of incre
