Betel quid use in relation to infectious disease outcomes in Cambodia.

OBJECTIVES: The habitual chewing of betel quid (areca nut, betel leaf, tobacco) is estimated to occur among 600 million persons in Asia and the Asia-Pacific Region. Emerging data from rural Asia indicate that the betel quid is part of traditional medicine practices that promote its use for a wide range of ailments, including infectious disease. In the present study, we examined the association between betel quid, traditional medicine, and infectious disease outcomes. METHODS: For the purpose of a nationwide, interviewer-administered, cross-sectional survey of tobacco use (including betel quid

The multi-step process of building TB/HIV collaboration in Cambodia.

Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS have synergistic health impacts in terms of disease development and progression. Therefore, collaborative TB and HIV/AIDS activities are a logical health systems response. However, the establishment of these activities presents a challenge for countries that have strong vertical disease programs that differ in their implementation philosophies. Here, we review the process by which TB/HIV collaboration was established in Cambodia. A cycle of overlapping and mutually reinforcing initiatives - local research; piloted implementation with multiple options; and several roun

Etiology of diarrhea in young children and patterns of antibiotic resistance in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about diarrhea etiology and antibiotic resistance in developing countries where diarrhea is a major public health problem. METHODS: To describe diarrhea etiology and antibiotic resistance patterns in Cambodia, 600 children aged 3 months to 5 years with acute diarrhea (cases) and 578 children without diarrhea (controls) were enrolled from a hospital in Phnom Penh. Stool samples were collected, and pathogens and antibiotic resistance patterns were described. RESULTS: The most frequently isolated pathogens in these cases were enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (20%)

Cost-effectiveness of primary prophylaxis of AIDS associated cryptococcosis in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcal infection is a frequent cause of mortality in Cambodian HIV-infected patients with CD4+ count ≤100 cells/µl. This study assessed the cost-effectiveness of three strategies for cryptococcosis prevention in HIV-infected patients. METHODS: A MARKOV DECISION TREE WAS USED TO COMPARE THE FOLLOWING STRATEGIES AT THE TIME OF HIV DIAGNOSIS: no intervention, one time systematic serum cryptococcal antigen (CRAG) screening and treatment of positive patients, and systematic primary prophylaxis with fluconazole. The trajectory of a hypothetical cohort of HIV-infected patients with

Cryptococcal meningitis in HIV-infected patients: a longitudinal study in Cambodia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the frequency of diagnosis of cryptococcosis among HIV-infected patients in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, at programme entry, to investigate associated risk factors, and to determine the incidence of cryptococcal meningitis. METHODS: We analysed individual monitoring data from 11,970 HIV-infected adults enrolled between 1999 and 2008. We used Kaplan-Meier naïve methods to estimate survival and retention in care and multiple logistic regression to investigate associations with individual-level factors. RESULTS: Cryptococcal meningitis was diagnosed in 12.0% of the patients: 106

Financial costs of deworming children in all primary schools in Cambodia.

In 2002, Cambodia's Ministry of Health launched a deworming programme to deliver an anthelmintic drug (mebendazole 500 mg) and health education to 75% of its school children twice a year. Cambodia's school population is approximately 2.8 million. The deworming programme was organized into two phases: the first phase (December 2002-March 2003) targeted more than one million school children from 11 provinces; and the second phase (July 2003-January 2004) targeted the entire school population. The cost to treat each child was 12 cents (0.11 USD) during the first phase, 6 cents during the second p

Beta-lactam resistance among Enterobacteriaceae in Cambodia: The four-year itch.

Although antibiotics are too often used inappropriately in Cambodia, published data on antimicrobial resistance in this country are scarce. Epidemic dissemination and the transfer of resistance genes to other bacterial species put the population at risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and characteristics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) isolated in consecutive samples tested at Institut Pasteur du Cambodge over a 4-year period (2012-2015). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by disk diffusion on agar technique

High prevalence of Ancylostoma ceylanicum hookworm infections in humans, Cambodia, 2012.

Ancylostoma ceylanicum, a hookworm of canids and felids in Asia, is becoming the second most common hookworm infecting humans. In 2012, we investigated the prevalence and infection dynamics of and risk factors for hookworm infections in humans and dogs in a rural Cambodian village. Over 57% of the population was infected with hookworms; of those, 52% harbored A. ceylanicum hookworms. The greatest intensities of A. ceylanicum eggs were in persons 21-30 years of age. Over 90% of dogs also harbored A. ceylanicum hookworms. Characterization of the cytochrome oxidase-1 gene divided isolates of A. c

Self-reported serious illnesses in rural Cambodia: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial evidence that ill-health is a major cause of impoverishment in developing countries. Major illnesses can have a serious economic impact on poor households through treatment costs and income loss. However, available methods for measuring the impact of ill-health on household welfare display several shortcomings and new methods are thus needed. To understand the potential complex impact of major illnesses on household livelihoods, a study on poverty and illness was conducted in rural Cambodia, as part of an international comparative research project. A cross-sect

Khyâl attacks: a key idiom of distress among traumatized cambodia refugees.

Traumatized Cambodian refugees with PTSD often complain of khyâl attacks. The current study investigates khyâl attacks from multiple perspectives and examines the validity of a model of how khyâl attacks are generated. The study found that khyâl attacks had commonly been experienced in the previous 4 weeks and that their severity was strongly correlated with the severity of PTSD (PTSD Checklist). It was found that khyâl attacks were triggered by various processes--such as worry, trauma recall, standing up, going to a mall--and that khyâl attacks almost always met panic attack criteria. It was

Sexual behaviour and condom use among unmarried young men in Cambodia.

The objective of this paper is to describe the sexual behaviour of 665 unmarried men aged 15-24, and explore factors associated with condom use at last intercourse. We use data from a cross-sectional survey conducted in economically marginal areas of Phnom Penh and Kratie town, Cambodia. One-third of respondents reported intercourse and half had had sex by the time they were 23. Of these, 39% had given money or gifts in exchange for sex. Transactional sex often occurred in the company of other males, and condom use was higher among those males compared with those who were alone. Of all sexuall

Checklist and diversity of tick fauna associated with domestic animals in Cambodia.

The tick fauna in Cambodia is poorly documented, with limited information on the diversity and distribution of tick species. This study aimed to address this knowledge gap by investigating tick species collected from various hosts, and across different habitats and regions of the country. Tick sampling was conducted in urban areas, rural villages, farms, and forest fringes, with additional samples obtained from a wildlife rescue center, caves, and swiftlet nests. Ticks were collected directly from hosts, as well as on vegetation through flagging methods. Tick species were identified morphologi

Survey of malaria vectors on the Cambodia, Thailand and China-Laos Borders.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles maculatus, Anopheles minimus and Anopheles dirus are the major vectors of malaria transmission in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). The malaria burden in this region has decreased significantly in recent years as all GMS countries progress towards malaria elimination. It is necessary to investigate the Anopheles diversity and abundance status and assess the Plasmodium infection rates to understand the malaria transmission potential of these vector species in GMS countries to guide the development of up-to-date vector control strategies and interventions. METHODS: A sur
