Media reporting of tenofovir trials in Cambodia and Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Two planned trials of pre-exposure prophylaxis tenofovir in Cambodia and Cameroon to prevent HIV infection in high-risk populations were closed due to activist pressure on host country governments. The international news media contributed substantially as the primary source of knowledge transfer regarding the trials. We aimed to characterize the nature of reporting, specifically focusing on the issues identified by media reports regarding each trial. METHODS: With the aid of an information specialist, we searched 3 electronic media databases, 5 electronic medical databases and ext

Epidemiology of hip and wrist fractures in Cameroon, Africa.

Osteoporosis and fragility fractures are believed to be uncommon in Africa. To reevaluate this notion, we documented all patients aged 35 years and older admitted to the two main urban hospitals in Cameroon following a diagnosis of fracture during 2 years. Among 513 patients sustaining fractures (192 women, 321 men), 13.5% of all fractures in women occurred at the hip (n=26), 4.7% at the forearm (n=9), and 81.8% (n=157) at other sites (mainly tibia and femoral shaft). In men, the corresponding figures were 9% (n=29), 1.9% (n=6), and 89.1% (n=286). Of the hip and wrist fractures occurring in wo

Human schistosomiasis in Cameroon. I. Distribution of schistosomiasis.

The status of schistosomiasis in Cameroon was examined in a nationwide survey of 5th grade schoolchildren. Five hundred twelve schools were surveyed; 19,524 urine and 22,166 stool samples were examined. The 3 northern provinces, which comprised 29% of the population, had 87% of all urinary and 82% of all intestinal cases. These provinces have a low seasonal rainfall. The presence of temporary bodies of water and of molluscan intermediate hosts adapted to this environment permits intense transmission of schistosomiasis haematobium and mansoni. In the rest of the country, the distribution of Sch

The impact of small dams on parasitic diseases in Cameroon.

Economic development in Africa implies the provision of vast, sparsely populated regions with improved road networks and agricultural techniques. Climatic constraints mean that control of water resources is essential in arid areas. But hydrogrophic modifications also have the potential for adverse impact on the health of local populations. The extension of water sources and their all year round supply of water mean that people are attracted towards them, and to the same places where conditions favour the spread of intermediate hosts and vectors of parasitic diseases such as schistosomiasis, on

Schoolchildren and ocular onchocerciasis in the rain-forest of Cameroon.

The results of surveys among 188 primary school children in two hyperendemic rain-forest villages in South-West Cameroon are reported. The children were examined for their nutritional state and for lesions due to onchocerciasis, with emphasis on eye pathology. Clinical manifestations in the two villages hyperendemic for onchocerciasis were compared with those found in a hypo-endemic coastal village. The primary school age appeared to be the period with the highest increase in ocular, notably corneal, involvement in onchocerciasis. The prevalence of ocular involvement showed an increase from 42

Origins and elements of the population policies of Cameroon Republic.

The author discusses the pro-natalist policies of Cameroon, measures that are not explicit population policies but are instead implied in other government policies and pronouncements. It is argued that "this pronatalist policy partly has its roots in the inherent cultures of the people which have been forged from several years of ravages from epidemic and endemic diseases, inter-tribal conflicts and slave trade. These have been further authenticated, constitutionalised and perpetuated by official policy which bears the stamp of its French colonial masters...." These policies include "legislati

[Cameroon swelling; infection by the filaria Loa loa].

Recurrent skin edemata due to an infestation with the filaria Loa loa are called Cameroon or Calabar swellings. These are tense elastic, circumscribed, indolent swellings, which are just slightly red coloured and disappear within 24 to 48 hours. Intervals of several weeks or months may occur. One should think of Loa loa disease seeing travellers return from Loa endemic areas (West Africa) with recurrent, transitory edema and eosinophilia. The stay in these areas may have been several years before! Treatment and prophylaxis: Diethylcarbamazine.

Molecular typing of Mycobacterium bovis isolates from Cameroon.

In order to gain a better understanding of the molecular epidemiology of Mycobacterium bovis isolates in Cameroon, 75 isolates of M. bovis collected in three provinces of northern Cameroon were studied by spoligotyping. For 65 of these isolates, typing was also carried out by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) with DraI, and 18 of the isolates were also typed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with probe IS6110-RHS. Molecular typing of the isolates by these techniques revealed a high degree of homogeneity, with 10 spoligotypes for 75 isolates, four PFGE profiles f
