Single-item versus scale: Comparing respondent demographic, social, and health characteristics by measure of loneliness using the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) data.

BACKGROUND: Growing research and clinical attention to loneliness has led to a wide range of available measures; however, few studies directly compare different loneliness measures within the same population. Measures include single-item, direct questions and indirect, multi-item scales. This study compared responses and respondent characteristics between a direct single-item loneliness question and an indirect multi-item scale. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of population-based survey data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA). The sample included baseline (2

Symptoms of depression and anxiety, and unmet healthcare needs in adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted access to healthcare services in Canada. Research prior to the pandemic has found that depression and anxiety symptoms were associated with increased unmet healthcare needs. The primary objective of this study was to examine if mental health was associated with perceived access to healthcare during the pandemic METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from 23,972 participants (aged 50-96) in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging COVID-19 Exit Survey (Sept-Dec 2020). We used logistic regression to estimate how the presence of depre

Associations of sleep apnoea with glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration: an analysis in the United Kingdom Biobank and the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

BACKGROUND: Sleep apnoea, a common sleep-disordered breathing condition, is characterised by upper airway collapse during sleep resulting in transient hypoxia, hypoperfusion of the optic nerve, and spike in intracranial pressure. Previous studies have reported conflicting findings on the association of sleep apnoea with glaucoma, and there are limited reports on the link between sleep apnoea and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS: Middle-aged and older participants from the longitudinal United Kingdom (UK) Biobank (n = 502,505) and the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA;

Characterization of depression subtypes and their relationships to stressor profiles among middle-aged and older adults: An analysis of the canadian longitudinal study on aging (CLSA).

The current diagnostic criteria for depression do not sufficiently reflect its heterogeneous clinical presentations. Associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), allostatic load (AL), and depression subtypes have not been extensively studied. Depression subtypes were determined based on clinical presentations, and their relationships to AL biomarkers and ACEs were elucidated in a sample of middle-aged and older adults. Participants from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging who screened positive for depression were included (n = 3966). Depression subtypes, AL profiles and ACE

Penalty Versus Premium: Social Disposition Differentiates Life Satisfaction Among Living-Alone Immigrant and Native-Born Older Adults-Findings From the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA).

Using data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, in this study we provide an alternative explanation for the gap of life satisfaction between living-alone immigrants and Canadian-born older adults. Based on the Big-Five personality traits, we use the latent class analysis to generate two types of social dispositions, social independence and social dependence. With social dispositions taken into account, living alone contributes to life satisfaction in opposite ways for immigrant and Canadian-born older adults, by playing a negative role for the former group and a positive role for the

Frailty is associated with lower-limb osteoarthritis incidence over six-years regardless of sex and type of frailty index in the Canadian longitudinal study on aging.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to test whether increases in frailty are associated with a higher likelihood of developing lower-limb osteoarthritis over six-years, with stronger associations in females, and to compare whether results are specific to a self-reported versus a comprehensive frailty index. DESIGN: Data were drawn from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging's comprehensive cohort. Frailty was quantified using a self-reported (FI-SELF; 46-items; n = 24,212) and comprehensive frailty index (FI-COM; 86-items; n = 13,757) at baseline, three-year, and six-year follow-up. Characterizing influenza vaccine coverage and factors associated with missed vaccination among adults from 2018 to 2021: an analysis of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) follow-up 2.

BACKGROUND: Influenza vaccination remains one of the best tools available to prevent severe disease in individuals at high risk of influenza complications. Yet, influenza vaccination among older adults and those at high risk of severe outcomes has remained low in Canada and other countries even when the vaccine is routinely recommended. Assessing the prevalence of influenza vaccination coverage over time and factors associated with missed vaccination can provide evidence to inform efforts to improve coverage. Among adults aged ≥ 65 years and adults aged 49-64 years with one or more chronic med

Sociodemographic determinants of mobility decline among community-dwelling older adults: findings from the Canadian longitudinal study on ageing.

BACKGROUND: Mobility is fundamental to healthy ageing and quality of life. Mobility decline has been associated with functional impairment, falls, disability, dependency, and death among older adults. We explored the sociodemographic determinants of mobility decline among community-dwelling older Canadians. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of a six-year follow-up of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Ageing (CLSA). Our analysis was based on 3882 community-dwelling older adults 65 years or older whose mobility was measured using timed-up and go (TUG) and 4-meter walk (4MWT) tests a

Associations between adherence to public health measures and changes in alcohol consumption among middle-aged and older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA).

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic and associated public health measures (PHMs) potentially affected alcohol consumption. Our objectives were to evaluate if adherence to PHMs was associated with changes in alcohol consumption and binge drinking during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted with participants (50-96 years) in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (N = 23 615). Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) were estimated from multinomial logistic regression models for associations between PHM adherence (self-quarantine, attending public gatherings, leaving ho

Does the Association Between Eye Disease and Cognitive Function Vary by Genetic Risk of Cognitive Decline? An Analysis of Hospital Data With Replication in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

PURPOSE: Age-related eye diseases are inconsistently associated with cognitive decline which could be due to effect modification. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether two genetic factors previously found to be associated with cognitive decline, the KIBRA (WWC1) and PDE7A/MTFR1 genes, modify the association between eye disease and cognitive function. METHODS: Data from a Montreal hospital-based cross-sectional study (n = 302) were used for the primary analysis. Candidate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs17070145 (KIBRA gene) and rs10808746 (PDE7A/MTFR1 gene) were includ

Cluster analysis to identify the profiles of individuals with compromised bone health versus unfortunate wrist fractures within the Canadian Longitudinal Study of Aging (CLSA) database.

UNLABELLED: We used cluster analysis to determine the profiles of individuals who sustained wrist fractures. We found two groups: (1) young and active and (2) older and less active. This information may be used to identify individuals who require further bone health interventions to optimize healthy aging. INTRODUCTION: Distal radial fractures (DRF) are the most common of all fractures, with 6% of males and 33% of females having one at some point in their lifetime. We hypothesize that DRF consists of two subpopulations: one with compromised bone health that is early in the osteoporosis (OP) t
