Intracanalicular antibiotics may obviate the need for surgical management of chronic suppurative canaliculitis.

Chronic suppurative lacrimal canaliculitis is an important cause of ocular surface discomfort. Treatment with topical antibiotics is often inadequate and surgical treatment by canaliculotomy and canalicular curettage has been the mainstay of treatment in the past. The role of canalicular antibiotic irrigation has been inadequately studied. We report the clinical features, microbiological profile and treatment outcome in a series of 12 patients with suppurative lacrimal canaliculitis. Two patients had Actinomyces infection, five had Nocardia infection and seven patients had polymicrobial infect

Canaliculitis: difficulties in diagnosis, differential diagnosis and comparison between conservative and surgical treatment.

The most important clinical features of canaliculitis include a red, swollen eyelid in the area of the affected canaliculus, a unilateral conjunctivitis, a mucopurulent discharge and in some cases dacryoliths visible in the lacrimal punctum. Conservative therapy was found to be little effective: only 10% of the patients could be cured, 40% showed a recurrence after conservative treatment. 20 patients (50%) were treated by canaliculotomy: 16 of these were cured by this surgical treatment, 4 patients complained of epiphora, although diagnostic syringing showed free lacrimal pathways. Lacrimal canaliculitis related to chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps: Case report and literature review.

This paper reports an unusual case of recurrent canaliculitis who had a long history of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. A 74-year-old woman complained of recurrent redness, purulent discharge, and occasional tearing of the left eye for 1 year. She has a 40-year untreated sinusitis history, with recurrent mucopurulent rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction and hyposmia, and loss of smell for 2 years. The patient's various symptoms, such as epiphora, purulent discharge, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, and anosmia, poorly responded to antibiotics and canaliculotomy. However, relief came from the

The novel diagnostic value and characteristic imaging features of CT dacryocystography in primary lacrimal canaliculitis.

To analyze the imaging characteristics and evaluate the diagnostic value of computed tomographic dacryocystography (CT-DCG) in primary canaliculitis. This is a retrospective study from three medical centers. We enrolled 126 primary canaliculitis patients (126 eyes) and 108 non-canaliculitis subjects (134 eyes). All patients with canaliculitis underwent CT-DCG, dacryoendoscopy examination, microbiologic culture, histopathologic staining and canaliculotomy to confirm the definitive diagnosis. Non-canaliculitis cases were diagnosed via dacryoendoscopy and CT-DCG. Demographics, clinical features,

To investigate the efficacy of lacrimal endoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of primary canaliculitis. This is a retrospective, interventional study. Fifteen patients diagnosed as primary canaliculitis were investigated, who underwent surgery with lacrimal endoscopy from January 2015 to December 2017 at Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital. Patients were subsequently followed post-operatively for at least 6 months. Pre- and post-operative main measurement included ocular surface symptoms, signs of canaliculitis, intraoperative images, treatment response and complications.Twelve patients (1

Minimally Invasive Punctum-Preserving Canaliculotomy With RS Type Silicone Tube Intubation for Primary Chronic Canaliculitis.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of a minimally invasive punctum-preserving canaliculotomy combined with RS-type silicone tube (RS tube) intubation for treating primary chronic canaliculitis (PCC). METHODS: This retrospective study included 62 patients (62 eyes) with PCC who underwent the procedure between October 2020 and September 2022. The procedure included punctum dilation, lacrimal probing, a 3 mm conjunctival incision nasal to the punctum, removal of concretions/polypoid tissue through 2 mm curettage, lacrimal irrigation, and RS tube intubation. Tubes were removed at 2 months postoperatio

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of super pulse CO2 laser-assisted punctoplasty with canalicular curettage in primary canaliculitis. In this retrospective serial case study, the clinical data of 26 patients who underwent super pulse CO2 laser-assisted punctoplasty for the treatment of canaliculitis were collected from January 2020 to May 2022. The clinical presentation, intraoperative and microbiologic findings, surgical pain severity, postoperative outcome, and complications were studied. Of the 26 patients, most were females (female:male 20:6), with a mean

The application of lacrimal duct endoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of lacrimal canaliculitis and obstructive diseases of the nasolacrimal duct.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical effectiveness and value of lacrimal duct endoscopy in lacrimal canaliculitis and nasolacrimal duct obstruction diseases. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 241 patients with lacrimal canaliculitis and nasolacrimal duct obstructions admitted to our hospital from January 2019 to June 2020. Among them, 165 patients underwent routine diagnosis and treatment and 76 patients underwent lacrimal duct endoscopy. The propensity score matching 1:1 nearest neighbor matching method was used to match 50 patients from each of the two methods to create a control group and

A case report on complete cure of recurrent primary canaliculitis by 4-snip punctoplasty and canalicular curettage.

RATIONALE: For the treatment of primary canaliculitis, 1,2,3-snip punctoplasty and canalicular curettage are commonly used; however, a recurrence rate of 6.6% to 22% has been reported. Herein, we describe a case of recurrent primary canaliculitis that was completely cured by 4-snip punctoplasty and canalicular curettage. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with chief complaints of epiphora, discharge, eyelid flare up, and swelling near the inferior lacrimal punctum in the left eye, which initially presented 6 months earlier. DIAGNOSIS: Based on the aforemention

A prospective study comparing mini-invasive and conventional canaliculotomy of punctum-sparing canaliculotomy for primary canaliculitis treatment.

PURPOSE: To compare outcomes of mini-invasive canaliculotomy with those of conventional canaliculotomy conducted using the punctum-sparing approach for the treatment of primary canaliculitis. METHODS: A prospective, comparative, and interventional case series study was conducted on 118 individuals with unilateral inferior primary canaliculitis. These patients were randomly divided into two groups, each with 59 cases. Group A underwent mini-invasive canaliculotomy (minor incision ~3 mm), whereas group B received conventional canaliculotomy (long incision ~6-8 mm). Punctum-sparing and canalicul
