Mucocutaneous candidiasis is a common infection affecting both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed individuals. Diversity in the clinical and histopathological presentation of mucocutaneous candidiasis is well known. However, the occurrence of cutaneous verrucous lesions and giant yeast-like structures has been rarely reported. In this article, we describe a case of disseminated mucocutaneous candidiasis in an immunosuppressed patient who presented as a verrucous plaque on the scrotum with giant Candida blastoconidia. This peculiar presentation expands the clinicopathological spectrum of muco

The spectrum of dermatologic findings related to human immunodeficiency virus includes a variety of cutaneous and mucocutaneous disorders. The most frequent diagnoses are oral candidiasis, seborrheic dermatitis, pyodermas and Kaposi's sarcoma. Distinctive skin lesions occur at various stages of HIV infection. Especially herpes zoster, seborrheic dermatitis and oral candidiasis may act as indicators, and their recognition is of particular importance for the early diagnosis of HIV infection and for the prevention of further opportunistic infections. In addition, some dermatologic findings as mol

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous candidiasis is a deep-seated skin fungal infection that is most commonly observed in immunocompromised patients. This fungal infection is conventionally treated with various formulations like gels and creams which are having different side effects and least therapeutic efficacy. Hence, it becomes necessary to develop a novel carrier system for the treatment of this deep-seated skin fungal infection. Econazole nitrate is the most widely used antifungal for the treatment of cutaneous candidiasis, therefore, in present research work we developed and evaluated econazole nitra

Congenital candidiasis, especially the disseminated disease, is very uncommon but has been reported in very low birth weight infants. Five cases of congenital candidiasis, two with cutaneous type and three with systemic type, are described. All cases were symptomatic within the first 24 hours of life and none of them had significant risk factors such as the presence of foreign body in the maternal genital tract. Cutaneous candidiasis presented as extensive erythematous rash with infiltrative plaques in one and as bullous lesions in the other. Three infants who had disseminated candidiasis pres

Candida infection is seen in patients with weak or disrupted host responses. Cutaneous candidiasis typically affects the intertriginous areas and presents with a red plaque surrounded by satellite lesions. Diagnosis of cutaneous candidiasis is made by visual inspection followed by potassium hydroxide normal saline microscopic preparation (wet mount) and polymerase chain reaction identification or culture of fungal organism. The following case describes a 38-year-old patient with limited mobility who presented with a peri sacral lesion that was first assumed to be a decubitus ulcer by nursing f

Congenital systemic candidiasis is a rare disease observed in both full-term and preterm infants. It can occur with or without congenital cutaneous candidiasis (CCC) and to date, only a few cases have been reported in the literature. We report here, a case of a full-term newborn who presented with diffuse skin eruptions at birth. Blood, urine, and skin scraping cultures were positive and the aetiological agent was Candida albicans. After six weeks of anti-fungal treatment with fluconazole, the newborn was cured. Early diagnosis is crucial in preventing complications caused by candidiasis in ne

Disseminated candidiasis is a frequently fatal condition that is rising steadily in immunocompromised patients. We present the case of a 62-year-old African American woman with acute myelogenous leukemia who developed characteristic cutaneous signs of systemic candidiasis. Early cultures and biopsies resulted in early diagnosis, which prompted proper antifungal therapy and a positive outcome.

HIV-positive patients and those persons immunosuppressed as a result of other diseases or chemotherapy are especially susceptible to mycotic infections. The superficial fungal infections seen most often in patients with HIV infection include seborrheic dermatitis, various dermatophyte infections, candidiasis, and onychomycosis. Uncommonly, systemic fungal infections, such as candidiasis, histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and coccidioidomycosis, may disseminate to the skin, producing a wide variety of cutaneous lesions. All cutaneous lesions in these patients should be biopsied and cultured if an

Age alone is not usually sufficient for the development of disease due to Candida, but it appears to be associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Mucocutaneous Candida infections such as thrush and denture stomatitis are associated with local and mechanical factors. A rare and sight-threatening complication of cataract surgery is Candida endophthalmitis. Systemic Candida infections are becoming more common due to increasing use of immunosuppressive drugs and the increasing risk of nosocomial candidiasis in the intensive care unit. Candiduria is increasingly common in older patients wi

The incidence of candidiasis due to non-albicans Candida species (especially Candida glabrata) has significantly increased in recent decades. Candida glabrata often invades immunocompromised hosts and causes systemic or mucosal infections, whereas cutaneous infections are rarely reported. We present a rare case of cutaneous infection caused by C. glabrata and review all similar cases available in the PubMed database. A patient was admitted to the hospital with a 2-month history of a plaque on the face. Histopathological examination displayed typical infectious granulomas in the deep dermis, an

Five patients received ketoconazole treatment of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis. One also had disseminated histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis. Ketoconazole was well absorbed after an oral dose of 200 mg and produced detectable antifungal blood levels for more than eight hours after each dose. Thrush cleared in less than two weeks in all patients. Cutaneous lesions cleared slowly during several months of treatment. A patient with polymycotic infection had a rapid clearing of candidiasis, but her histoplasmosis did not respond to three weeks of treatment. Adverse drug effects were minimal. Ket

Investigations for candidiasis of the skin and mucous membranes were done in 191 probands over 65 years of age, of whon 187 were occupants of an old people's home and 4 were having in-patient treatment. In the homes being tested Candida infections of the skin and mucous membranes were very numerous (48% and 26% of those investigated) comparable with the epidemics of thrush in premature and newborn units in previous years. Even the localisation of candidiasis was remarkably similar to that in the newborn and infant age groups (Candida mycosis of the external ear and intercrural area, generalise

Candidal balanitis typically affects sexually active adult males and may present as eroded papules, pustules, whitish discharge or erythema with dry glazed appearance. We report an unusual presentation of this common infection in an uncommon demographic, candidal balanitis presenting as coalescent vesicles and erosions arranged in an arcuate pattern in a pre-school child.

Candida albicans is a normal constituent of the human microbiota and a ubiquitous human threat. This fungus causes diseases ranging from superficial cutaneous and mucosal candidiasis to life-threatening disseminated candidiasis. C. albicans hyphae secrete candidalysin, a cytolytic peptide toxin that damages host cells and activates immune responses. Candidalysin plays a key role in both pathogenicity and commensalism. In this Pearl, we review the host targets of candidalysin and how they modulate the interaction of C. albicans with the host.

The Vinyl adhesive tape (VAT) technique with methylene blue (MTB) may be useful as an adjunctive microscopic method for diagnosis of superficial fungal skin infections. A cross-sectional study was conducted between 2022 and 2025 on adults with dermatophytosis, pityriasis versicolor, and cutaneous candidiasis confirmed by skin scraping with potassium hydroxide (KOH). VAT technique with MTB staining was performed at the same lesion. Data on clinical characteristics, hyphal index, and time to microscopic identification were recorded. The primary objective was the positivity rate of VAT technique

This review focuses on the IL-17A family of cytokines produced by T lymphocytes and other immune cells and how they are involved in cutaneous pathogenic responses. It will also discuss cutaneous dysbiosis and FOXP3+ regulatory T cells in the context of inflammatory conditions linked to IL-17 responses in the skin. Specifically, it will review key literature on chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis and psoriasis.

Many of the molecular pathways associated with psoriasis pathogenesis are also involved in host defense mechanisms that protect against common pathogens. Candida can stimulate the production of cytokines that trigger or exacerbate psoriasis, and many systemic psoriasis treatments may put patients at increased risk for developing oral, cutaneous, and genitourinary candidiasis. Therefore, dermatologists should regularly screen patients with psoriasis for signs of Candida infection, and take steps to effectively treat these infections to prevent worsening of psoriasis symptoms. This review provid

beta2-Microglobulin knockout (beta2m-/-) mice, which lack major histocompatibility complex class I expression and are deficient in CD8alpha/beta T-cell receptor alpha/beta (TcRalpha/beta) T cells, were as resistant to systemic (intravenous) challenge with Candida albicans as immunocompetent controls. Conversely, the beta2m-/- mutant mice were susceptible to systemic candidiasis of endogenous origin despite the induction of C. albicans-specific antibody and cell-mediated immune responses after colonization with a pure culture of C. albicans. Despite some superficial and transient infections of
