Invasive Candida infections are one of the most important risk factors for the increasing mortality of immunocompromised patients with comorbidities in intensive care units. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the mortality rate and risk factors affecting mortality in patients followed up with the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis in our pediatric intensive care unit. Patients who were between the ages of 1 month and 18 years followed up in the paediatric intensive care unit with invasive candidiasis between 2014 and 2018, were included in the study. The demographic characteristics of the

T2Candida enables detection of five Candida species in whole blood within approximately 5 hours. Routinely drawn EDTA blood samples were prospectively stored and tested with T2Candida in patients with invasive candidiasis identified by routine index blood or sterile site cultures. T2Candida was compared to diagnostic blood and sterile site cultures and also performed with samples obtained prior and after collection of index cultures. T2Candida was evaluated with 133 samples of 32 patients with candidemia and 22 patients with deep-seated invasive candidiasis. In the candidemic group 28/32 (87.5

In order to know the epidemiology and the changes of antifungal resistance in invasive candidiasis (IC) we carried out this prospective study of Candida strains belonging to patients admitted to 26 Spanish hospitals from June 2011 to June 2012 diagnosed with IC. Clinical information and the identity of the Candida species were collected and antifungal susceptibility was tested using broth microdilution in five agents: amphotericin B, fluconazole, voriconazole, caspofungin and anidulafungin. A total of 705 cases-isolates were documented. Most of the patients suffered from candidemia and several

Invasive mycoses present significant medical challenges, with new populations at risk and the emergence of antifungal resistance. Therapeutic options for antifungal treatment are limited and further complicated by drug-drug interactions, toxicity, and constraints in administration routes. Despite the urgent need for more antifungal drugs, few new antifungal drugs have been introduced over the past decades. Nevertheless, there is hope on the horizon, with new antifungal drugs approved or in late-stage clinical trials. In this review, we critically examine the antifungal activity of rezafungin,

Invasive candidiasis (IC) is a serious, life-threatening, and costly fungal infection if not diagnosed early and treated appropriately. However, this healthcare-associated mycosis caused by Candida spp. is difficult to diagnose because of its nonspecific clinical signs and symptoms, and the lack of early and accurate detection methods. IC is also difficult to treat due to its late diagnosis, the limited antifungal arsenal, and the rapid emergence and spread of (multi)drug-resistant Candida strains. Therefore, early and accurate innovative methods for species and resistance identification in IC

Invasive candidiasis (IC) is a serious infection caused by several Candida species, and the most common fungal disease in hospitals in high-income countries. Despite overall improvements in health systems and ICU care in the last few decades, as well as the development of different antifungals and microbiological techniques, mortality rates in IC have not substantially improved. The aim of this review is to summarize the main issues underlying the management of adults affected by IC, focusing on specific forms of the infection: IC developed by ICU patients, IC observed in haematological patien

The intestinal microbiota is a complex community of bacteria, archaea, viruses, protists and fungi1,2. Although the composition of bacterial constituents has been linked to immune homeostasis and infectious susceptibility3-7, the role of non-bacterial constituents and cross-kingdom microbial interactions in these processes is poorly understood2,8. Fungi represent a major cause of infectious morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised individuals, although the relationship of intestinal fungi (that is, the mycobiota) with fungal bloodstream infections remains undefined9. We integrated an optim

BACKGROUND: The intestinal microbiota plays a crucial role in human health, which could affect host immunity and the susceptibility to infectious diseases. However, the role of intestinal microbiota in the immunopathology of invasive candidiasis remains unknown.
METHODS: In this work, an antibiotic cocktail was used to eliminate the intestinal microbiota of conventional-housed (CNV) C57/BL6 mice, and then both antibiotic-treated (ABX) mice and CNV mice were intravenously infected with Candida albicans to investigate their differential responses to infection. Furthermore, fecal microbiota tran

Invasive candidiasis (IC) represents the leading fungal infection of humans causing life-threatening disease in immunosuppressed and neutropenic individuals including also the intensive care unit patients. Despite progress in recent years in drugs development for the treatment of IC, morbidity and mortality rates still remain very high. Historically, cell-mediated immunity and innate immunity are considered to be the most important lines of defense against candidiasis. Nevertheless recent evidence demonstrates that antibodies with defined specificities could act with different degrees showing

This study reports for the first time, to our knowledge, descriptive epidemiological data for 188 invasive Candida isolates from Pakistan, including species identification and antifungal susceptibility against fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, caspofungin, micafungin, anidulafungin and amphotericin. Risk factors for invasive candidiasis (IC) were determined for 96 patients from Karachi, Pakistan. In adults and neonates, Candida tropicalis (38 and 36 %, respectively) was the most common species, followed in adults by Candida parapsilosis (17.8 %), Candida glabrata (15.9 %) and Candida al

BACKGROUND: Invasive candidiasis (IC) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients, and treatment success relies on early diagnosis and prompt initiation of an appropriate antifungal agent. The increasing rates of resistance to first-line antifungal agents (azoles, echinocandins, and polyenes), along with changes in the epidemiology of IC and the spread of multidrug-resistant C. auris, pose further challenges for the management of IC. Limited therapeutic options and routes of administration, drug-drug interactions, and drug toxicities of commonly utilized antifungals

The landscape of invasive Candida infections in patients with hematologic malignancy has evolved due to the adoption of anti-fungal prophylaxis, advances in oncological therapies, and developments in antifungal therapies and diagnostics. Despite these scientific gains, the morbidity and mortality caused by these infections remain unchanged, highlighting the importance of an updated understanding of its epidemiology. Non-albicans Candida species are now the predominant cause of invasive candidiasis in patients with hematological malignancy. This epidemiological shift from Candida albicans to no

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect and safety of cinnamaldehyde on immunosuppressed mice with invasive pulmonary candidiasis.
METHODS: An immunosuppressed BALB/c mouse model was established by intraperitoneal administration of cyclophosphamide (200 mg/kg) once daily for 2 days. The immunosuppressed mouse with invasive pulmonary candidiasis model was further established by nasal perfusion of Candida albicans suspension. In the cinnamaldehyde treatment group, immunosuppressed mice with invasive pulmonary candidiasis were orally given cinnamaldehyde 240 mg/(kg·d) for 14 consecutive days. Fluconaz

Oral candidiasis is the most prevalent fungal infection of the oral cavity and is frequently associated with immunosuppression. Although traditionally classified as a superficial condition, growing evidence suggests that oral infection with Candida sp. in a susceptible host may disseminate and evolve into invasive candidiasis, such as bloodstream infection (candidemia), one of the leading nosocomial infections associated with high mortality. This review addresses the clinical manifestations of oral candidiasis, local and systemic risk factors, and the emerging role of non-albicans Candida and

The rapidity of the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis (IC) is crucial to allow the early introduction of antifungal therapy that dramatically increases the survival rate of patients. Early diagnosis is unfortunately often delayed because Candida blood culture, the gold standard diagnostic test, is positive in only 50% of cases of IC and takes several days to obtain this result. Complementary non-culture-based methods relying on the detection of Candida cell wall polysaccharides in the serum, β-glucans and mannans, by enzymatic and immunological reagents have been successfully developed to allo
