Cannabis and psychotic illness.

In-patients with psychotic symptoms and cannabis-positive urine analysis were assessed by PSE within one week of admission and again at one and six months. Concurrently admitted psychotic patients with drug-free urine analysis were controls. At one week the two groups differed significantly on only five PSE items: changed perception, thought insertion, non-verbal auditory hallucinations, delusions of control, and delusions of grandiose ability. One item (delayed sleep) differed at one month, and none at six months. The symptom cluster at one week is consistent with acute cannabis intoxication.

Cannabis-associated arterial disease.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to describe the different arterial complications reported in cannabis smokers. METHODS: This study was a literature review. RESULTS: Cannabis use was found to be associated with stroke, myocardial infarction, and lower limb arteritis. Arterial disease involved especially young men. There was a very strong temporal link between arterial complications and cannabis use for stroke and myocardial infarction episodes. Patient outcome was closely correlated with cannabis withdrawal and relapses associated with cannabis rechallenge. Cannabis use was associated w

[Cannabis affects driving skills].

Delta (9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the most important psychoactive substance in cannabis, is frequently detected in blood from apprehended drivers suspected for drugged driving. Both experimental and epidemiological studies have demonstrated the negative effects of THC upon cognitive functions and psychomotor skills. These effects could last longer than a measurable concentration of THC in blood. Culpability studies have recently demonstrated an increased risk of becoming responsible in fatal or injurious traffic accidents, even with low blood concentrations of THC. It has also been demonst

Cannabis-induced propriospinal myoclonus.

We report on a case of a 25-year-old woman with clusters of myoclonus induced by a single exposure to inhaled cannabis. Investigations excluded a structural abnormality of the spine. Multi-channel surface EMG with parallel frontal EEG recording confirmed the diagnosis of propriospinal myoclonus.

Cannabis Use and Anesthesia.

Consistent evidence supporting the use of cannabinoids for management of acute pain is lacking. A small number of observational studies suggest cannabinoid use is associated with reduced opioid use but pain scores remain unchanged. The majority of randomized trials involving a variety of cannabinoid compounds have shown no benefit for acute pain. Chronic cannabis users may be at increased risk of experiencing elevated levels of acute pain and these individuals may require greater quantities of opioids compared to non-cannabis users. There is also evidence suggesting that chronic, high-dose can

Hemoptysis in a cannabis user.

A healthy young man presented to the emergency department with mild hemoptysis associated with cannabis abuse. He was on no medications and cocaine abuse was ruled out by both history and negative toxicology screens. There were neither signs of an infection, nor of a systemic or cardiac disease. Imaging studies were consistent with diffuse alveolar hemorrhage, a reported, albeit rare adverse drug reaction of tetrahydrocannabinol (Naranjo score 6). The patient improved spontaneously within a few days, hemoptysis stopped and repeat imaging was entirely normal. With the increase in cannabis abuse

Cannabis and the Gastrointestinal Tract.

UNLABELLED: Cannabis has been used for its medicinal purposes since ancient times. Its consumption leads to the activation of Cannabis receptors CB1 and CB2 that, through specific mechanisms can lead to modulation and progression of inflammation or repair. The novel findings are linked to the medical use of Cannabis in gastrointestinal (GI) system. PURPOSE: The objective of the present paper is to elucidate the role of Cannabis consumption in GI system. An additional aim is to review the information on the function of Cannabis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS AND RESULTS

Cannabis: are there any benefits?

Cannabis has been used as a medicine for millennia. Prohibition in the mid-20th century precluded early scientific investigation. 'Cannabis' describes three separate forms - herbal cannabis, 'hemp' products, pharmaceutical-grade regulated cannabinoid-based medical products (CBMP). In Australia, CBMP became available for prescription in November 2016. Herbal cannabis with Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is illegal, and cannabidiol (CBD) in herbal extracts, are both unregulated and unreliable sources of cannabinoids. The endocannabinoid system (ECS), delineated in the late 1990s, has increa

The clinical toxicology of cannabis.

Cannabis is one of the most widely used recreational drugs in the world. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the psychoactive principal constituent of the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa). It is taken either orally or by inhalation, resulting in sedation, euphoria, relaxation and loss of social inhibition. Adverse effects from higher doses can include fear, distrust and a profound state of unease, hallucinations, ataxia, stupor and seizures. Long-term use can result in respiratory and cardiovascular toxicity and has been associated with a range of psychiatric conditions. Cannabinoid hyperemesis synd

Cannabis effects on lipoproteins.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The endocannabinoid system affects several physiological functions. A family of endocannabinoid receptors is susceptible to cannabis constituents. Cannabis is widely used in our society and following its recent legalization in Canada, we focus on how exposure to cannabis and pharmacologic cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) inhibition affect lipoprotein levels. RECENT FINDINGS: Several groups have reported that exposure to cannabis does not increase weight despite the marked increase in caloric intake. In observational studies, the effect of smoked cannabis exposure on plasma

Pharmacology of Medical Cannabis.

The Cannabis plant has been used for many of years as a medicinal agent in the relief of pain and seizures. It contains approximately 540 natural compounds including more than 100 that have been identified as phytocannabinoids due to their shared chemical structure. The predominant psychotropic component is Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), while the major non-psychoactive ingredient is cannabidiol (CBD). These compounds have been shown to be partial agonists or antagonists at the prototypical cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. The therapeutic actions of Δ9-THC and CBD include an ability to a

[Cannabis - therapy for the future?].

Despite all the progress achieved in the treatment of chronic gastrointestinal diseases, in some patients the treatment does not reach long-term optimum effectiveness. Therefore a number of patients have turned to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Of the different types of CAM patients with GIT diseases tend to prefer in particular homeopathy, acupuncture and not least phytotherapy, where therapeutic use of cannabis may also be included. The pathophysiological basis of therapeutic effect of curative cannabis has not been fully clarified so far. Many scientists in many fields of med

Adverse effects of cannabis.

Cannabis, Cannabis sativa L., is used to produce a resin that contains high levels of cannabinoids, particularly delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which are psychoactive substances. Although cannabis use is illegal in France and in many other countries, it is widely used for its relaxing or euphoric effects, especially by adolescents and young adults. What are the adverse effects of cannabis on health? During consumption? And in the long term? Does cannabis predispose users to the development of psychotic disorders? To answer these questions, we reviewed the available evidence using the stand

Cannabis and psychiatric disorders.

There are connection between use of cannabis and many psychiatric disturbances in adolescents, especially "cannabis psychosis", depression, panic attacks and suicide. Negative effects could occur either as a result of a specific pharmacological effect of cannabis, or as the result of stressful experiences during the intoxication of cannabis in young people. Potentially is very dangerous high frequency suicidal ideation among cannabis users.

Comorbidity: cannabis and complexity.

Cannabis is one of the most commonly used illicit drugs, and its effects have traditionally been seen as less harmful than outcomes associated with the highly prevalent use of alcohol and other illicit substances (e.g., cocaine and amphetamines), and injecting drugs. Consequently, less attention has been focused on developing and evaluating interventions in this area. However, current research supports the idea that cannabis does pose a number of acute and chronic health risks to the individual and to society. The authors review findings concerning the physiological and neurological effects of
