Destructive hostility: the Jeffrey Dahmer case. A psychiatric and forensic study of a serial killer.

We were involved as forensic experts in the case of the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. We discuss the scene and victim autopsy findings, with a brief consideration of the basic emotion of hostility. These findings support the thesis that at the basis of this serial killer's behavior were primary unconscious feelings of hate that he had channeled into a sadistic programmed destruction of 17 young men. The interview of the serial killer, the photographic scene documentation, and the autopsy findings stress the ambivalent homosexuality of the killer, his sexual sadism, his obsessive fetishism, and

Incidence, Severity, and Welfare Implications of Lesions Observed Postmortem in Laying Hens from Commercial Noncage Farms in California and Iowa.

The egg industry is moving away from the use of conventional cages to enriched cage and noncage laying hen housing systems because of animal welfare concerns. In this study, the prevalence and severity of lesions in noncage laying hens from commercial farms in two of the largest egg-producing states, California and Iowa, were evaluated by postmortem examination. Hens that died or were culled were collected during early, mid, and late stages of the laying cycle from 16 houses on three farms. Of the 25 gross lesions identified for study, 22 were observed, with an average of four lesions per hen.

Benzene inhalation produces leukemia in mice.

Female C57Bl/6 mice were exposed to 300 ppm benzene 6 hr/day, 5 days/week for 16 weeks and then held for lifetime observation. Sixty-four weeks after commencement of the study, 10 of 90 exposed mice had died as opposed to only 1 of 88 controls. Of the 10 exposed mice that died, 6 had thymic lymphomas, 2 had unspecified lymphomas, 1 was killed when moribund and found leukemia-free, and 1 was undiagnosed due to autolysis and partial cannibalization. The single dead control animal did not have lymphoma or leukemia. These data provide proof of the leukemogenicity of benzene in female C57Bl/6 mice.

Kuru, the First Human Prion Disease.

Kuru, the first human prion disease was transmitted to chimpanzees by D. Carleton Gajdusek (1923⁻2008). In this review, we summarize the history of this seminal discovery, its anthropological background, epidemiology, clinical picture, neuropathology, and molecular genetics. We provide descriptions of electron microscopy and confocal microscopy of kuru amyloid plaques retrieved from a paraffin-embedded block of an old kuru case, named Kupenota. The discovery of kuru opened new vistas of human medicine and was pivotal in the subsequent transmission of Creutzfeldt⁻Jakob disease, as well as the r

Efficacy of anticoagulant-free alternative bait products against house mice (Mus musculus) and brown rats (Rattus norvegicus).

The attractiveness and efficacy of four anonymous anticoagulant-free alternative rodenticides (active ingredients cellulose or plaster) were tested on wild strain groups of house mice (Mus musculus Linnaeus) and brown rats (Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout) in laboratory choice and no-choice experiments. In no-choice tests, the rodenticide product was offered ad libitum to the animals for 21 days (mice) and 10 days (rats), respectively. In choice tests, the rodenticide product and non-poisoned food were offered for 28 days (mice) and 14 days (rats). Two products with cellulose (C1 and C2) as the a

Prion diseases and the BSE crisis.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and human Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) are among the most notable central nervous system degenerative disorders caused by prions. CJD may present as a sporadic, genetic, or infectious illness. Prions are transmissible particles that are devoid of nucleic acid and seem to be composed exclusively of a modified protein (PrPSc). The normal, cellular prion protein (PrPC) is converted into PrPSc through a posttranslational process during which it acquires a high beta-sheet content. It is thought that BSE is a result of cannibalism in which faulty industrial

Venom and Social Behavior: The Potential of Using Spiders to Evaluate the Evolution of Sociality under High Risk.

Risks of sociality, including competition and conspecific aggression, are particularly pronounced in venomous invertebrates such as arachnids. Spiders show a wide range of sociality, with differing levels of cannibalism and other types of social aggression. To have the greatest chance of surviving interactions with conspecifics, spiders must learn to assess and respond to risk. One of the major ways risk assessment is studied in spiders is via venom metering, in which spiders choose how much venom to use based on prey and predator characteristics. While venom metering in response to prey acqui

A multiple correspondence analysis of necropsy findings in non-caged laying hens that died during the production period.

Causes of normal mortality in laying hens have received relatively little scientific attention, despite health, welfare, economic and environmental implications. Targeting control and preventative measures to currently relevant flock-specific mortality causes is essential for successful outcomes in commercial flocks. Monitoring of mortality causes is a prerequisite. However, diagnostic criteria are not consistently reported and terminology varied between previous studies. The objective of this study was to investigate associations between pathological findings in dead laying hens with an explo

Slow virus infections.

Slow viruses produce diseases whose incubation periods range from several months to many years. Because of this long latency period, the lack of inflammation produced by these diseases and the lack of recoverable virus particles, it is only recently that the association has been made between the viruses and the diseases they cause. The detailed study of kuru, a neurologic affliction of a remote tribe of cannibals in New Guinea, was responsible for the synthesis of new and previously gathered information into a unified framework to explain not only kuru but other diseases as well. Since then, a

[ROLE OF ANIMALS AND HUMAN BEINGS IN THE SPREAD OF TRICHINOSIS IN THE KURSK REGION].

Trichinosis is natural focal invasion in the Kursk Region. Porkworms (Trichinella) circulate in natural biocenoses among wild carnivorous mammals, wild boars, and rodents. Trichinosis cases are recorded in synanthropic animals. Carnivorous mammals form the basis for the parasitic system of trichinosis. The animals are infected with Trichinella through carnivorism, necrophagy, and cannibalism. The transport Trichinella vectors, necrophagous insects, naturally play an insignificant role-in the spread of trichinosis. Trichinella infection in animals occurs more commonly through necrophagia and ca

Life-table analysis of Anopheles malaria vectors: generational mortality as tool in mosquito vector abundance and control studies.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Vector control will for sometime remain a primary weapon in the war against vector borne diseases. Malaria is of paramount importance in this with its associated high morbidity and mortality especially in sub-Saharan Africa. This study on generational mortality associated factors in Anopheles mosquitoes life-table analysis was designed to investigate the fecundity, levels of mortality and mortality associated factors at the aquatic stages of anopheline malaria vectors. METHODS: Mortality associated factors were investigated at the eggs, I and II instar larval, III and

Hen welfare in different housing systems.

Egg production systems have become subject to heightened levels of scrutiny. Multiple factors such as disease, skeletal and foot health, pest and parasite load, behavior, stress, affective states, nutrition, and genetics influence the level of welfare hens experience. Although the need to evaluate the influence of these factors on welfare is recognized, research is still in the early stages. We compared conventional cages, furnished cages, noncage systems, and outdoor systems. Specific attributes of each system are shown to affect welfare, and systems that have similar attributes are affected

Parasite Infections Influence Immunological Responses But Not Reproductive Success of Male Hellbender Salamanders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis).

The emergence and spread of infectious diseases is a significant contributor to global amphibian declines, requiring increased surveillance and research. We assessed host-vector-parasite dynamics using a population of eastern hellbender salamanders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) that harbor leeches (Placobdella appalachiensis) that transmit endoparasitic blood parasites (Trypanosoma spp) to the host, with coinfection frequently occurring. We centered our study on adult males throughout their extended 8-month paternal care period because recent research indicates that nest failure caused by lac

The ability of oxytocin to induce short latency maternal behavior is dependent on peripheral anosmia.

Nulliparous female Sprague-Dawley rats, cannulated in the left lateral ventricle, were ovariectomized and estrogen primed, then either rendered anosmic via intranasal irrigation with zinc sulfate or left with intact olfaction. Forty-eight hr later, after a 2-hr habituation to the test cage, these animals were injected with either intracerebroventricular oxytocin (400 ng in 2 microliter saline) or saline (2 microliter). Only the group receiving both zinc sulfate and oxytocin became maternal. Additionally, approximately one third of the olfaction-intact rats and none of the anosmic rats cannibal

Behaviours indicating cannibalistic necrophagy in ants are modulated by the perception of pathogen infection level.

Cannibalistic necrophagy is rarely observed in social hymenopterans, although a lack of food could easily favour such behaviour. One of the main supposed reasons for the rarity of necrophagy is that eating of nestmate corpses carries the risk of rapid spread of pathogens or parasites. Here we present an experimental laboratory study on behaviour indicating consumption of nestmate corpses in the ant Formica polyctena. We examined whether starvation and the fungal infection level of the corpses affects the occurrence of cannibalistic necrophagy. Our results showed that the ants distinguished bet

Causes of disease in two commercial flocks of laying hens.

Laboratory examination of all birds that were culled or died during an eight-month period in two commerical laying flocks was performed to reveal the causes of disease and their prevalence. The average weekly total of diseased birds was greater in one flock (60-69) than the other (27-37). This resulted mainly from a high incidence in the former flock of leucoses and sarcomas, although losses due to fatty liver syndrome, prolapse and cannibalism and cage layer fatigue were also marginally greater in this flock than the second. Haemangiomas occurred more frequently in the flock with the higher d

Giant cell interstitial pneumonia associated with occupational iron exposure: an exceptional case report.

Multinucleated giant cell pneumonia associated with heavy metals (GIP) is a rare disease of the pulmonary parenchyma, with just over one hundred cases reported in the scientific literature. It has been associated almost exclusively with occupational exposure to tungsten and cobalt. Although its pathogenesis is not fully understood, it has been proposed that exposure to an aetiological agent, together with an immune imbalance, underlies the pathophysiology of the characteristic microscopic findings, including fibrosis, multinucleated foreign-body giant cells and cannibalism. To date, iron has n
