Squaric acid dibutyl ester (SADBE) is a commonly used treatment for verruca vulgaris of childhood. Few studies, however, have examined the role of SADBE in combination with other topical therapies for warts. We sought to determine if trichloroacetic acid 50% (TCA) and/or cantharidin 0.7% improve therapeutic response to SADBE. A retrospective chart review of 74 patients who were treated for warts at a pediatric dermatology practice in 2010 was performed. Cox regression analysis was used to identify determinants of 100% response to SADBE and found that number of warts was most important (P=0.002

Defects in neutrophil function have been implicated in a wide spectrum of clinical conditions. Several models are employed to study activated human neutrophils akin to those found at a site of inflammation. These include whole blood (WB) ex vivo stimulation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and in vivo techniques: cantharidin blister, skin windows and intra-dermal injection of UV-killed E.coli (UVKEc). Neutrophils obtained from these have never been compared. We compared the activation status of neutrophils from each technique in order to inform the optimal model for use in human studies. Healthy

Plasma and skin blister fluid concentrations of tinidazole following a single oral dose of 2 g drug, and after multiple doses of 0.25 g every 12 h, were determined. Skin blisters were produced by direct application of 0.25% cantharidin ointment to the skin. The maximum concentration in plasma of about 36 mg.l-1 was observed after about 2 h, whereas in skin blister fluid the peak occurred after about 6 h and was 30 mg.l-1. The half-life in plasma was slightly shorter than in blister fluid at 17 and 19 h, respectively, but the difference was not significant. The penetration of tinidazole into ca

Although molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a common infectious dermatosis that is self-resolving, treatment can diminish discomfort and decrease the risk of autoinoculation and infection to others, because it is transmitted through direct skin contact. This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of topical treatments for MC. A PubMed search following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines was performed to find randomized, controlled trials of MC treatment. The search yielded 129 publications, but only 15 studies published between 1994 and 2020 were found to

The German poet Hölderlin, assumed to have suffered from schizophrenia, in fact has been the victim of a combined calomel and cantharidine intoxication administered by his physician Autenrieth. This new theory explains much better his behavioural changes and also his neurological and other concomitant symptoms; it can be tested by analysing a very few of his hairs for the presence of these compounds.

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a human viral infection contracted by skin-to-skin inoculation, autoinoculation, and fomite inoculation. There are a variety of treatments for MC, including watchful waiting, curettage, cantharidin, cryotherapy, and topical imiquimod. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections also have been treated with imiquimod. This article discusses the treatment of MC and HSV infections and reviews the literature.

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is an infectious dermatosis that commonly presents in children and immunocompromised individuals. Although lesions usually resolve spontaneously after several months, they can be symptomatic and cause psychosocial distress. We review the evidence underlying treatment methods available for MC lesions, including potassium hydroxide, salicylic acid, hydrogen peroxide, retinoids, cantharidin, cryotherapy, curettage, and pulsed dye laser to aid practicing dermatologists in therapy selection.

The pathological transformation of the skin into a thick and hard callus due to repetitive trauma or friction is commonly known as corn. Although a variety of medical and operative treatment choices have been proposed, an ideal treatment method is yet to be defined. Effectiveness of tangential excision together with topical cantharidin has been evaluated. We used Canthacur-PS as an adjunct to excision in an outpatient setting. Canthacur-PS is a commercially available topical solution that includes 1% cantharidin, 30% salicylic acid and 5% podophyllin. The treatment has been applied to 72 patie

BACKGROUND: Defective neutrophil recruitment has been described as a primary pathogenic abnormality in Crohn's disease. Cantharidin-induced blisters provide a novel investigative tool to assess cellular influx and inflammatory mediator production during acute inflammation and allows the effects of therapy on these parameters to be measured.
AIMS: To determine whether reduced neutrophil tissue penetration in Crohn's disease relates to impaired production of inflammatory mediators, and whether it can be reversed by granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF).
METHODS: Neutrophil and monocyte

INTRODUCTION: Meloidae are distributed in temperate and arid regions but are also common in subtropical and tropical savannahs. These insects contain cantharidin, a vesicant substance that can cause poisoning by ingestion and dermatitis by direct contact.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We describe recurrent Meloidae-related dermatitis outbreaks and their health impact by analyzing medical consultation records and meteorological data.
RESULTS: Between 2015 and 2019, dermatitis outbreaks took place at a French military base at the end of the rainy season, from July to August, with 100 cases reported in

Ions, small molecules, and drugs are absorbed in the intestinal epithelium mediated by transcellular and paracellular pathways. The function of various transporters expressing in the apical and basolateral membranes of intestinal epithelial cells has been well characterized. In contrast, claudins and occludin, components of the tight junctions (TJs), determine the paracellular permeability to ions and low molecular weight compounds, but the properties for permeability has not been clarified in detail. In the present study, we examined the effects of anti-histamine drugs, chlorpheniramine and d

Chemosensitivity testing of adenocystic, tongue and gingiva cancer cell lines to 14 antitumor drugs using a tetrazolium-based colorimetric assay (MTT assay) was carried out and the values of the relative antitumor activity (RAA) of the drugs were compared. Adriamycin (ADM), methotrexate (MTX) and fluorouracil (5-FU) showed the most potent RAA against the cell lines while Cantharidin (CTD) did not show RAA. The rank orders of other 10 drugs against each cell line differed from each another.

OBJECTIVE: This review aims to understand medication adherence and its influence on efficacy for existing and novel topical treatments for molluscum contagiosum.
METHODS: A PubMed search was performed on clinical studies from 2000 to 2023 assessing adherence and treatment efficacy for topical and non-topical therapies used to treat molluscum.
RESULTS: Adherence to individual topical treatments for molluscum is poor and limits their utility in clinical practice, despite demonstrated safety, painless administration, and advantages for pediatric and home use. Studies suggested lower adherence f

BACKGROUND: Chronic cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are characterised by low-grade systemic inflammation in part due to reduced nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability associated with endothelial dysfunction. Bioavailability of NO can be enhanced by activation of the non-canonical pathway, through increased dietary inorganic nitrate consumption with the potential to attenuate inflammation.
METHODS: We sought to determine whether dietary inorganic nitrate influences the inflammatory response in models of localised (cantharidin-induced blisters) and systemic inflammation (typhoid vaccine), in healthy m

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1) is localized to sensory C-fibres and its opening leads to membrane depolarization, resulting in neuropeptide release and neurogenic inflammation. However, the identity of the endogenous activator of TRPV1 in this setting is unknown. The arachidonic acid metabolites 12-hydroperoxyeicosatetraenoyl acid (12-HpETE) and 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) have emerged as potential endogenous activators of TRPV1. However, whether these lipids underlie TRPV1-mediated neurogenic inflammation remains

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) and verruca vulgaris are common infectious skin conditions encountered by pediatric clinicians. There is substantial overlap between treatment options for both conditions, and the most effective regimens often use a combination of in-office and at-home treatments. There are innumerable treatments for both conditions. This article focuses on familiarizing the pediatric provider with prescription topical therapies for both conditions including cantharidin, imiquimod, and retinoids, as well as berdazimer sodium for MC and 5-fluorouracil and diphenylcyclopropenone and Sq

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Molluscum contagiosum affects up to 11.5% of children, yet optimal treatment remains uncertain. Previous systematic reviews included mixed adult/pediatric populations, limiting applicability to children. We performed the first pediatric-specific network meta-analysis comparing molluscum contagiosum treatment efficacy and safety.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science through December 2025 for controlled trials evaluating molluscum contagiosum treatments in children. Two reviewers independently selected studies, extracted data, and ass

BACKGOUND: Ginsenoside Rb1, the main active constituent of Panax ginseng, displays significant anti-inflammatory activity, although the mechanism has not been clearly unraveled. In this study, Rb1's mechanism of anti-inflammatory effects were investigated.
METHODS: The flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were empolyed to detect pro-inflammatory cytokines release. The related protein and gene expression was investigated by western blotting and qRT-PCR. The dimerization of TLR4 was measured by co-immunoprecipitation and molecular docking assays.
