Building thoracic surgical capacity for tuberculosis care in India: Experience from a Residential Skill Training Programme.

Tuberculosis (TB), particularly multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), continues to pose a major public health challenge in India (1). Thoracic surgery plays an important adjunctive role in selected patients with complex pulmonary TB; however, access to trained thoracic surgeons remains limited. Under the guidance of the Central TB Division, the National Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases (NITRD), New Delhi, in collaboration with The Union, initiated a 3-month Residential Skill Training Programme in Thoracic Surgery in 2022. This short communication describes the experiences and perc

Modeling the Lifetime Impact of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Training: Implications for Building Capacity in Global Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Training local surgeons and building local surgical capacity is critical to closing the gap in unmet surgical burden in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings. We propose a conceptual framework to quantify the impact of a single surgeon's training across multiple generations of trainees. METHODS: A literature review was conducted to identify existing models for quantifying the impact of training. A model to estimate the attributable impact of surgical training was devised, based on a surgeon's attributable impact on a trainee and the lifetime number of cases trainees would

Building adjustment capacity to cope with running water in cultured grass carp through flow stimulation conditions.

The adaptability of cultured fish to complex flow conditions is crucial for their survival after being released into the wild. Running water in natural environments poses significant challenges for the proliferation and release of cultured fish. This study aimed to investigate the effects of flow stimulation on the adjustment capacity of cultured fish to cope with running water. The target fish were cultured grass carp. An annular flume was used to conduct tests on training and control groups. The results demonstrated an enhancement in the adjustment capacity of cultured fish following appropr

Fogarty International Center collaborative networks in infectious disease modeling: Lessons learnt in research and capacity building.

Due to a combination of ecological, political, and demographic factors, the emergence of novel pathogens has been increasingly observed in animals and humans in recent decades. Enhancing global capacity to study and interpret infectious disease surveillance data, and to develop data-driven computational models to guide policy, represents one of the most cost-effective, and yet overlooked, ways to prepare for the next pandemic. Epidemiological and behavioral data from recent pandemics and historic scourges have provided rich opportunities for validation of computational models, while new sequen

Reciprocal capacity building for collaborative disability research between disabled people's organizations, communities and higher education institutions.

This paper focuses on the reciprocal capacity building that occurred through collaborative research between occupational therapy departments from six higher education institutions in South Africa, community-based organizations and a disabled people's organization on disabled youth and their livelihoods. The authors aimed to identify principles for collaboration and capacity building from the pilot phase and first phase of the main study. Occupational therapy departments place students in communities for service learning experience, but little collaboration with disabled people's organizations

A Decade of Discovery: Methodological Innovation, Capacity Building, and Global Leadership in Hidden Population Research in Iran.

BACKGROUND: In the early 2010s, Iran lacked reliable estimates of key populations at increased risk of HIV, including people who inject drugs, female sex workers, and men who have sex with men. This information gap limited evidence-based planning, resource allocation, and monitoring of HIV prevention programs. METHODS: This paper reviews the development and achievements of Iran's population size estimation program over more than a decade. Drawing on program records, published studies, training activities, and policy contributions, we summarise the program's impact across research, education,

Building medical toxicology capacity in Africa: a review and strategic perspective on the need for fellowship training programs.

INTRODUCTION: Toxic exposures and poisoning constitute a substantial but underestimated public health hazard throughout Africa, for which pesticides, drugs, traditional medicine, snake venom, and industrial chemicals are a disproportionate cause of avoidable disease and death. METHODS: This narrative review takes into account existing global models of toxicology education while considering African epidemiology and the constraints of its healthcare systems. MAIN FINDINGS: Partly due to this disparity between burden and capacity, medical toxicology is not well established on the continent as a w

The importance of a One Health approach for prioritising zoonotic diseases to focus on capacity-building efforts in Uganda.

Zoonotic diseases constitute a significant threat to the health of humans, livestock and wildlife, as well as to livestock production, and can also have a negative impact on our shared environment and on livelihoods. Uganda is a hotspot for emerging and re-emerging zoonotic disease threats, with the main drivers of this phenomenon being identified as agricultural intensification, proximity to wildlife reservoirs and climate change. The threat of zoonotic disease outbreaks affects not only human healthcare systems but also livestock production, food security, human capital development, wildlife

Polio Surge Capacity Support Program Contributions to Building Country Capacities in Support of Polio Outbreak Preparedness and Response: Lessons Learned and Remaining Challenges.

Despite coordinated efforts at global level, through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), poliomyelitis disease (Polio) is still a major public health issue. The wild poliovirus type-1 (WPV1) is still endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and new circulations of the WPV1 were confirmed in southeast Africa in 2021, in Malawi and Mozambique. The circulating vaccine derived polioviruses (cVDPV) are also causing outbreaks worldwide. The Task Force for Global Health (TFGH)'s Polio Surge Capacity Support Program, established in 2019, is an effort to reinforce the existing partnership with

Commentary: Pricing Cataract (and Other Straightforward) Surgeries - A Policy Perspective to Build Capacity, Value and Innovation.

Aligning with Crump and colleagues' (2024) conclusions on cataract surgery, this article champions a level playing field for expanding surgical capacities for straightforward surgeries. It is agnostic toward for-profit or not-for-profit models. It argues for experimenting with new ambulatory facilities to meet urgent needs, emphasizing Ontario's successful two-decade experience with models such as the Kensington Eye Institute. The discussion advances a three-tiered pricing framework, advocating for transparent, structured pricing to reduce wait times and improve public health outcomes. This ap

Capacity building for quality care and education for children with severe to profound intellectual disabilities in South Africa.

In the South African context, children with severe to profound intellectual disabilities are not accommodated in the compulsory education system, although steps are being taken in this direction in acknowledgement of their right to education. Critical to this development is the training of educators and caregivers. There is a paucity of studies from South Africa addressing the training of educators and caregivers. The Teacher Empowerment for Disability Inclusion (TEDI) project developed a course on the education and care of children with severe to profound intellectual disabilities to facilita
