Early changes in diabetic retinopathy: capillary loss and blood-retina barrier permeability in relation to metabolic control.

In diabetic retinopathy capillary loss and blood-retina barrier leakage are prominent factors. We present a study with quantitative measurements of both capillary loss and leakage and their relation to cumulative metabolic control. Seventeen insulin-dependent diabetic patients with no retinopathy or only mild background retinopathy and 10 years' duration of the disease were included in the study. Status of metabolic regulation had been followed for at least 6 years. Seven healthy subjects were included as controls. In diabetic patients the perifoveal intervascular areas were found to increase

Some properties of a capillary permeability-increasing enzyme-2 from the venom of Agkistrodon caliginosus (Kankoku-Mamushi).

Capillary permeability-increasing enzyme-2 (CPI-enzyme-2) consists of a single polypeptide chain with an isoelectric point of pH 3.5. The enzyme is composed of 369 amino acid residues, based on a mol. wt of 44,000, and contains 20.3% carbohydrate. Both arginine ester hydrolytic and capillary permeability-increasing activities of the enzyme were inhibited by treatment with diisopropylfluorophosphate, indicating that the enzyme is a serine proteinase. The N-terminal amino acid sequence shows homology with that of CPI-enzyme-1 and similarity to those of batroxobin or kallikrein-like enzyme from o

Neutrophil degranulation and increased pulmonary capillary permeability following oesophagectomy: a model of early lung injury in man.

In nine subjects undergoing oesophagectomy a transient but significant increase in pulmonary vascular permeability to transferrin was detected in both lungs 8 h after surgery. It coincided with a significant increase in plasma lactoferrin, evidence of intravascular and intra-alveolar neutrophil elastase release and with arterial hypoxaemia. The postoperative state in these patients had intravascular and pulmonary features often associated with the adult respiratory distress syndrome, and might be a useful model for the study of the early inflammatory events underlying lung injury in man.

[Ultrastructure of capillary permeability in human brain tumors. 3: Mechanisms of contrast enhancement in non-glial tumors].

In order to elucidate mechanisms of contrast enhancement on computed tomography observed in non-glial tumors, tumors vessels were studied with conventional ultrathin section and freeze-fracture replica techniques. The materials were obtained from surgically removed specimens in 19 cases of tumors (6 of meningioma, 6 of hemangioblastoma, 5 of pituitary adenoma, and 2 of acoustic neurinoma). The following results were obtained. The common findings of these non-glial tumor vessels in ultrathin preparations were surface infoldings, increased pinocytotic vesticles and many fenestrations of endothel

[Hypovolemic shock caused by increased capillary permeability associated with monoclonal gammopathy. New case and review of the literature].

The authors report another case of hypovolaemic shock due to increased capillary permeability and review previous reports in the medical literature. It is a rare condition with all patients presenting hypovolaemic shock of sudden onset with varying degrees of hypoproteinaemia and increased haematocrit. A monoclonal globulin peak is usually observed on serum electrophoresis during and between episodes of shock. The pathological role of this globulin in the increased capillary permeability has not been established.

Increased pulmonary capillary permeability and extravascular lung water after major vascular surgery: effect on radiography and ventilatory variables.

INTRODUCTION: We decided to investigate the pathogenesis of pulmonary ventilatory and radiographic abnormalities in patients after major vascular surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixteen mechanically ventilated patients without heart failure were studied, within 3 h after major abdominal surgery. We measured extravascular lung water, intrathoracic, global end-diastolic and pulmonary blood volumes, (67)Ga-transferrin pulmonary leak index and ventilatory and radiographic variables. The latter allowed computation of the lung injury score as a measure of lung injury. RESULTS: The extravascular lun

Effect of substance P and Sar9Met(O2)11-substance P on cutaneous capillary permeability in guinea pig skin.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of several drugs on the increase in cutaneous capillary permeability induced by intradermal injection of substance P (SP) and Sar9Met(O2)11-SP in guinea pig skin. On the one hand, the increase in cutaneous capillary permeability was partly reduced by spantide, promethazine, atropine or SR 40037, an inhibitor of the angiotensin-converting enzyme. On the other hand, norepinephrine and B3824, a B2-antagonist of bradykinin, showed an enhancing effect. Our results suggest that the effect of SP and Sar9Met(O2)11-SP in guinea pigs is partly mediated

[Ultrastructure of capillary permeability in human brain tumors. Part 1: Gliomas associated with cerebral edema (low density area)].

In order to elucidate pathogenesis of perifocal edema in the human brain tumors, we observed the alteration of capillary permeability between the glioblastomas with remarkable edema (4 cases) and astrocytoma with slight edema (3 cases). Specimens were studied by conventional ultrathin section and freeze-fracture replica technique. In ultrathin sections of capillaries in glioblastomas, some of these cell junctions were tortuous, elongated, in fact, open. Other capillary abnormalities included endothelial hyperplasia with extensive vesicular formation, surface infolding of endothelial cells, irr

Cerebral extraction of N-13 ammonia: its dependence on cerebral blood flow and capillary permeability -- surface area product.

13N-labeled ammonia was used to investigate 1) the cerebral extraction and clearance of ammonia, 2) the mechanism by which capillaries accommodate changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and 3) its use for the measurement of CBF. The unidirectional extraction of 13NH3 in rhesus monkeys was measured during PaCO2 induced changes in CBF and dog studies were performed using in vitro tissue counting techniques to examine 13NH3 extraction in gray and white matter, mixed tissue and cerebellum during variations in CBF produced by combinations of embolization, local brain compression, and changes in PaCO2

Permeability of the pineal organ of the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) to HRP with special reference to different types of blood capillaries.

The pineal organ of the golden hamster consists of deep and superficial portions which are connected to each other by a stalk. The permeability of capillaries for horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injected intravenously was examined in sections of entire portions of the gland that cut either along coronal or sagittal planes. Two distinct portions of the parenchyma, i.e., dorsal major and ventral minor ones, were found in the superficial gland. Most of the capillaries in the dorsal portion were of the continuous type of endothelium, whereas those in the ventral portion were fenestrated. In the dorsa

Assessment of permeability in deep tissue capillaries using a new method reflects the nutrient supply status in a healthy heart.

INTRODUCTION: The in vitro organoid model is a valuable tool for studying organ development and disease. However, a key current challenge is the absence of a functional vascular compartment, which results from limited understanding of capillary function in vivo. Multisystem disorders involve physiological abnormalities that affect different organs in various ways. Notably, women have a higher prevalence of microvessel disease in the heart compared to men. This is because, until now, there has been no way to detect or evaluate the material exchange functions carried out by capillaries deep with

Alteration in capillary permeability of horseradish peroxidase in the stria vascularis and movement of leaked horseradish peroxidase after administration of furosemide.

The permeability of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) from the capillaries of the stria vascularis and the movement of leaked HRP in this site were investigated over time after the administration of furosemide, a loop diuretic, for the purpose of clarifying the function of the stria vascularis. Guinea pigs were used as experimental animals. The stria vascularis became markedly edematous at 10 min after the administration of furosemide, while the vascular permeability of HRP was decreased. This edema was thought to result not from the high permeation of strial capillaries, but from the blockage of w

Diabetic microangiopathy treated with elastic compression--a microcirculatory evaluation using laser-Doppler flowmetry, transcutaneous PO2/PCO2 and capillary permeability measurements.

One hundred and forty patients with diabetic microangiopathy were studied by laser-Doppler flowmetry--measuring skin blood flow at rest (RF) and the venoarteriolar response (VAR)--by transcutaneous PO2 and PCO2 measurements and by evaluation of capillary permeability (rate of ankle swelling = RAS). Seventy were treated for 12 months with below-knee, elastic stockings. Seventy patients were left without compression acting as a control group. After 5 and 12 months there were no significant changes in the control group. However there was a significant improvement of microcirculatory parameters in

An environmentally-friendly permeable liquid salt pyrolysis method based on capillary heat transfer for recycling waste insulator materials.

Molten salt pyrolysis technology stands out as a potent approach for achieving efficient degradation and energy recovery of composite organic materials. Nevertheless, challenges such as the high melting point of molten salt, product destruction, and the complexities of treating waste salt pose significant limitations to the widespread application and popularization of this technology. To tackle these issues, this study proposes a salt-assisted pyrolysis method based on capillary heat transfer called permeable liquid salt pyrolysis. Focusing on abandoned power industry insulators, the research

Mathematical modelling and analysis of thermoregulation effects on blood viscosity under magnetic effects and thermal radiation in a permeable stretching capillary.

The current study deals with the mathematical modelling and analysis of the effects of thermoregulation on blood viscosity under magnetic and thermal radiation effects on a permeable, stretching blood capillary. The model comprises the governing equations of the resulting boundary layer problem, which is a set of nonlinear partial differential equations, and this is transformed into a coupled system of nonlinear differential equations using similarity transformation. The numerical solution of the problem is attained by the fourth-order Runge Kutta method with the shooting method. The current w
