Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a commensal bacterium from the carine mouth, causes septicemia in human beings through bites or scratches. We report a case of a 60-year-old man contracting septicemia due to C. canimorsus infection after a dog bite who died less than 12 hours after admission. We observed neutrophils with intracytoplasmic bacilli in the peripheral blood smear. We discuss clinical presentation and autopsy findings.

This report presents a rare case of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis with orbital and intracranial complications caused by Capnocytophaga sputigena in a pediatric patient. A 15-year-old male presented with orbital cellulitis, acute sinusitis, and meningismus. Brain imaging showed evidence of early intracranial abscess formation and areas of cerebral infarction. He underwent urgent endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and drainage of an orbital subperiosteal abscess. This case underscores the critical role of timely diagnostic imaging, multidisciplinary care, appropriate surgical management, and effect

BACKGROUND: Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a Gram-negative rod, belongs to the Flavobacteriaceae family and colonizes the oropharynx of dogs and cats. Infections with C. canimorsus are rare and can induce a systemic infection with a severe course of the disease. So far, only five case reports of C. canimorsus infections associated with Waterhouse-Friderichsen Syndrome (WFS) have been reported with only two of the patients having a history of splenectomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a fatal case of WFS due to C. canimorsus bacteremia and mycetal superinfection in a 61-year-old female asplen

We describe the case of an immunocompetent 75-year-old man with Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacteraemia and meningitis. C. canimorsus is commonly found in the oral flora of dogs with human infection typically occurring following a bite. Unusually, while our patient was a dog owner, there was no history of bite nor scratch mark. Admission blood cultures flagged positive for Gram-negative bacilli, but prolonged molecular analysis was required before C. canimorsus was isolated in blood and cerebrospinal fluid. There is a high mortality rate in invasive infection, and in our patient's case, antibiot

INTRODUCTION: A periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a potentially devastating complication following an arthroplasty procedure. There are many organisms that commonly cause this complication; in this case report, we will discuss a PJI caused by an unusual bacteria found in the mouths of domestic pets.
OBJECTIVE: To present a case report of a patient with a periprosthetic hip infection from Capnocytophaga canimorsus and review the literature.
METHODS: We present a case of C canimorsus PJI in an immunocompetent woman who had undergone a total hip arthroplasty. The patient was doing well po

UNLABELLED: Essentials Capnocytophaga canimorsus causes severe dog bite related blood stream infections. We investigated if C. canimorsus contributes to bleeding abnormalities during infection. The C. canimorsus protease CcDPP7 causes factor X dysfunction by N-terminal cleavage. CcDPP7 inhibits coagulation in vivo, which could promote immune evasion and trigger hemorrhage.
SUMMARY: Background Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a Gram-negative bacterium that is present in the oral flora of dogs and causes fulminant sepsis in humans who have been bitten, licked, or scratched. In patients, bleeding ab

Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a commensal bacterium of dog's mouth flora causing severe infections in humans after dog bites or scratches, has a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (endotoxin) with low-inflammatory lipid A. In particular, it contains a phosphoethanolamine (P-Etn) instead of a free phosphate group at the C-1 position of the lipid A backbone, usually present in highly toxic enterobacterial Gram-negative lipid A. Here we show that the C. canimorsus genome comprises a single operon encoding a lipid A 1-phosphatase (LpxE) and a lipid A 1 P-Etn transferase (EptA). This suggests that lipid A is mo

A healthy 54-year-old man presented at the emergency department with signs of sepsis. Four days prior he was bitten and scratched by his dog. Microscopy of the blood smear showed intracellular Gram-negative rods. Despite maximal treatment the patient died a day and a half after admission due to septic shock with multi-organ failure and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. After extended incubation of the spleen culture a Gram-negative rod was isolated and identified as Capnocytophaga canimorsus based on 16s RNA analysis. This is a commensal microorganism found in the oropharynx of dogs and

A 31-year-old man with a history of congenital ventricular septal defect presented to the Emergency Department with 3 days of fever and palpitations. Four days earlier he sustained a dog bite to the left hand with localized swelling that rapidly resolved without additional signs of infection. No other source of fever was identified on history and physical examination. He was admitted to the hospital for evaluation of the origin of the fever, including possible endocarditis. Complete cardiac evaluation revealed no valvular infection. On the fifth hospital day, the patient developed severe lower

A case is presented of fatal capnocytophaga canimorsus sepsis caused by a neglected cat scratch. Although fatalities are known to occur as a result of sepsis caused by this organism, death following cat scratch transmission has not previously been reported. The case is important as it demonstrates how a seemingly innocuous injury can have devastating consequences that may have been prevented by simple first aid measures.

BACKGROUND: Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a fastidious zoonotic pathogen, commonly transmitted from dogs or cats, that may cause fulminant sepsis and meningitis. Diagnosis is frequently delayed due to its slow growth, underscoring the importance of early clinical recognition and empiric therapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of Capnocytophaga sepsis with meningitis that resulted in seizure, multi-organ failure and cardiac arrest in a previously immunocompetent individual. With prompt investigation and diagnostics, Capnocytophaga was identified and with supportive therapies, the patient

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is zoonotic agent isolated from humans bitten by dogs or cats. Although rare, severe infection usually affects male patients over the age of 50, asplenic or immunocompromised. Diagnosis is often challenging, often missing a history of contact with dogs or pre-existing wounds. Mortality rate is extremely high, since infection can lead to fulminant sepsis. We report a case of a patient admitted to ED for septic shock of unknown origin. Severe sepsis developed since our patient was asplenic and possessed multiple comorbidities. Due to hypoxia and respiratory failure, the

Zoonotic species of Capnocytophaga genus belong to the oral microbiota of dogs and cats. They may be responsible for serious human infections, mainly after animal bites, with a high mortality rate. In France, only few cases have been reported and no multicenter study has been conducted. Our aim was to describe the French epidemiology of Capnocytophaga zoonosis. We conducted a multicenter (21 centers) retrospective non-interventional, observational study in France describing the epidemiology of Capnocytophaga zoonosis (C. canimorsus, C. cynodegmi, C. canis) over 10 years with regard to clinical

Meningitis and septicaemia due to Capnocytophaga canimorsus are extremely rare and described as emerging zoonoses because of their low incidence and prevalence, but also because of the challenges in bacterial identification, thus, the real number of cases is probably underestimated. We report the case of a 61-year-old man, with a history a chronic alcoholism, who developed, following a recent dog bite, meningitis with normoglycorachia and concomitant sepsis, and had a favorable outcome after intravenous probabilistic antibiotherapy combining ceftazidime and metronidazole. This association aime

BACKGROUND: Dog bites are a frequent injury, but the incidence and type of lesions vary across countries. Although only few patients develop complications, the treatment of advanced injuries has a considerable medical, social and economic impact. A frequently isolated pathogen in dog bite wounds is Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacterium that can cause sepsis or meningitis. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) therapy has been shown to be useful in treating anaerobic infections, most likely because it creates an inhospitable environment for the bacterium and enhances the patient's immune response.

The hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is known to have several causes, including infectious diseases, drugs, pregnancy, and malignant disease. We report a patient who developed acute renal failure attributable to HUS in the course of Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacteremia. Acute tubular necrosis as well as HUS should be considered as a cause of acute renal failure in the setting of Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacteremia.

BACKGROUND: Histopathologic studies of this unusual keratitis caused by Capnocytophaga species have not been reported previously.
METHODS: The authors report the light microscopic and ultrastructural findings of three patients with a distinctive necrotizing keratitis caused by an anaerobic gram-negative bacillus. In three patients, ages 19, 81, and 91 years, a necrotizing stromal keratitis developed; two of these patients had a previous penetrating keratoplasty for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy. The first patient did not have ocular surgery previously and was treated initially for presumed

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a commensal bacterium found in the oral flora of dogs and cats. Close animal contact with humans through biting, scratching, or wound licking may lead to transmission of this microorganism. Although infections are uncommon, they can be severe, particularly in individuals with predisposing risk factors. Transmission has most commonly been associated with dogs and, less frequently, cats. Reports involving other animal sources remain rare. We report the case of a male patient who presented to the Emergency Department with fever and abdominal pain approximately one wee
