Co-infection of peste des petits ruminants and goatpox in a mixed flock of sheep and goats in Kanam, North Central Nigeria.

Peste-des-petits-ruminants (PPR) and Goat pox (GTP) are two devastating and economically important transboundary animal diseases of small ruminants in Africa and Asia that have been difficult to control. This study however, investigated an outbreak of PPR and GTP in a mixed flock of indigenous sheep and goats in Kanam, North Central Nigeria. A total of nine sera and seven tissues (lungs, spleen, scab and skin) samples were collected and analysed in the laboratory using competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) for PPR antibodies and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection of

Innate Immune Responses to Wildtype and Attenuated Sheeppox Virus Mediated Through RIG-1 Sensing in PBMC In-Vitro.

Sheeppox (SPP) is a highly contagious disease of small ruminants caused by sheeppox virus (SPPV) and predominantly occurs in Asia and Africa with significant economic losses. SPPV is genetically and immunologically closely related to goatpox virus (GTPV) and lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), which infect goats and cattle respectively. SPPV live attenuated vaccines (LAVs) are used for vaccination against SPP and goatpox (GTP). Mechanisms related to innate immunity elicited by SPPV are unknown. Although adaptive immunity is responsible for long-term immunity, it is the innate responses that preve

Development of a Synthesized Gene Unique to Lumpy Skin Disease Virus and Its Application in Serological Differentiation of Naturally Infected from Vaccinated Cattle with Attenuated Goat Pox Vaccine.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an important infectious disease caused by lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) in bovine. LSDV, sheep pox virus (SPPV), and goat pox virus (GTPV) from the same genus Capripoxvirus (CaPV) of the Poxviridae family exhibit a nucleotide sequence similarity of up to 97%. Therefore, attenuated vaccines of GTPV and SPPV are often used to vaccinate cattle against LSD. However, available serological testing methods cannot accurately differentiate cattle vaccinated with GTPV from those infected with LSDV, posing a significant risk for disease spread. In this study, we developed a

Coinfection kinetics of goatpox virus and peste-des-petits-ruminants virus in Vero cells.

Goatpox, sheeppox, and peste-des-petits-ruminants (PPR) are economically important virus diseases affecting goats and sheep, which often cause coinfection/comorbidities in the field. Coinfection with these viruses leads to enhanced infection in natural scenarios in terms of morbidities and mortalities. Currently, individual live attenuated vaccines are being used to mitigate these diseases and research on combination vaccines for these diseases is encouraging. For the preparation of combination vaccines, vaccine strains of the peste-des-petits-ruminants virus (PPRV), goatpox virus (GTPV), and

Diagnostic approach, vaccination and treatment priorities for Lumpy Skin Disease in cattle: lessons from Balkan epidemics to Western Europe re-emergence (2025).

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) remains a high-impact, transboundary infection of cattle driven by capripoxvirus transmission via mechanical vectors, causing morbidity, production losses, and trade disruption. Following the 2015–2017 Balkan epidemics, coordinated high-coverage vaccination campaigns and movement restrictions substantially reduced disease transmission across southeastern Europe. However, the recent re-emergence of LSD in Western Europe in 2025, including outbreaks reported in Italy, France, and Spain, demonstrates that regional elimination remains fragile and requires sustained prepara

Design of Multi-Epitope DIVA-Compatible Vaccine Candidate Against Canine Parvovirus 2.

Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) is a highly contagious and often fatal canine pathogen, with antigenic variants (CPV-2a, 2b, 2c), maternally derived antibody (MDA) interference, and lack of Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals (DIVA) capability limiting current vaccines. Using an immunoinformatics-based reverse vaccinology approach, we identified conserved B-cell, cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL), and helper T lymphocyte (HTL) epitopes from CPV-2 structural (VP1, VP2) and nonstructural (NS1, NS2) proteins. These were screened for antigenicity, immunogenicity, safety, and stability. Th

The genome of swinepox virus.

Swinepox virus (SWPV), the sole member of the Suipoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae, is the etiologic agent of a worldwide disease specific for swine. Here we report the genomic sequence of SWPV. The 146-kbp SWPV genome consists of a central coding region bounded by identical 3.7-kbp inverted terminal repeats and contains 150 putative genes. Comparison of SWPV with chordopoxviruses reveals 146 conserved genes encoding proteins involved in basic replicative functions, viral virulence, host range, and immune evasion. Notably, these include genes with similarity to genes for gamma interferon (IFN-g

Seroprevalence of Sheep and Goat Pox, Peste Des Petits Ruminants and Rift Valley Fever in Saudi Arabia.

Sheep and goat pox, peste des petits ruminants and Rift Valley fever are important diseases of small ruminant livestock. Sheep and goat pox, along with peste des petits ruminants, are endemic throughout most of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Whereas Rift Valley fever is endemic in Africa, outbreaks in the Middle East have been reported over the past decade, including the Arabian Peninsula. Saudi Arabia is a major importer of livestock, and understanding the prevalence of these viral infections would be useful for disease control. In this study, sera from sheep and goats were collected from

The Safety and Efficacy of New DIVA Inactivated Vaccines Against Lumpy Skin Disease in Calves.

Background: Lumpy skin disease virus (Poxviridae family-Capripoxvirus genus) is the aetiological agent of LSD, a disease primarily transmitted by hematophagous biting, affecting principally cattle. Currently, only live attenuated vaccines are commercially available, but their use is limited to endemic areas. There is a need for safer vaccines, especially in LSD-free countries. This research aims to develop and test a safe and efficacious inactivated vaccine. Moreover, in this study, we used keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) as a positive marker to distinguish infected from vaccinated animals (DI

Expression of goat poxvirus P32 protein and monoclonal antibody preparation.

P32 protein serves as a crucial structural component of Goat pox virus (GTPV), which causes a highly virulent infectious disease in sheep and goats. Despite the fact that P32 has been widely expressed in the previous studies, it is difficult to obtain recombinant P32 efficiently. This study aimed to achieve soluble expression of P32 recombinant protein and to develop its specific monoclonal antibody. The gene fragment of P32Δ (GP32Δ) was synthesized by optimizing the coding sequence of amino acids 1-246 of the known goatpox P32 protein. Subsequently, GP32Δ was cloned into a prokaryotic express
