Factors Associated with the Development of Posterior Capsule Opacification Requiring Yttrium Aluminum Garnet Capsulotomy.

SIGNIFICANCE: Determining risk factors for posterior capsule opacification will allow for further interventions to reduce the risk of development and thus additional procedures. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate risk factors associated with development of clinically significant posterior capsule opacification requiring yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) capsulotomy. METHODS: Medical records of patients (≥18 years) who underwent cataract surgery between January 1, 2011, and March 31, 2014, at Kresge Eye Institute were reviewed. Three hundred eyes requiring YAG capsulotomy up to

Three-year follow-up of posterior capsule opacification with two different silicone intraocular lenses.

PURPOSE: To compare posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery with implantation of two silicone intraocular lenses (IOLs) with different designs. METHODS: We carried out a prospective, clinical study of 116 patients randomized to standardized phacoemulsification with implantation of CeeOn Edge (n = 57) or SI40NB (n = 59) IOLs. The follow-up period was 3 years. To evaluate PCO morphologically, digital images were obtained and analysed using evaluation of posterior capsule opacification computer software (epco). The neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) capsulotomy rate was recorded. RESUL

Self-assessed visual function for patients with posterior capsule opacification before and after capsulotomy.

PURPOSE: To describe the functional outcome, as defined using the Catquest questionnaire, for patients with posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after capsulotomy. METHODS: A total of 47 patients with PCO were examined before and 1 month after capsulotomy. In addition to the ophthalmic examination, Catquest was completed and a digital image of the posterior lens capsule acquired. RESULTS: Capsulotomy resulted in a good level of benefit, as defined using Catquest, for 77% of the patients. No subgroup of patients who derived an exceedingly good or poor level of benefit was identified. Disabil

SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, University of Vienna, Austria. METHODS: Forty eyes with senile cataract only were randomly assigned to Group A, which had curettage of the entire anterior capsule, or Group B, which had curettage of the nasal half of the anterior capsule. Aged Lens Epithelial Cells Suppress Proliferation and Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition-Relevance for Posterior Capsule Opacification.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a frequent complication after cataract surgery, and advanced PCO requires YAG laser (Nd: YAG) capsulotomy, which often gives rise to more complications. Lens epithelial cell (LEC) proliferation and transformation (i.e., epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)) are two critical elements in PCO initiation and progression pathogenesis. While PCO marginally impacts aged cataract surgery patients, PCO incidences are exceptionally high in infants and children undergoing cataract surgery. The gene expression of lens epithelial cell aging and its role in the di

Intraocular lens optic edge design for the prevention of posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery.

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a clouding of the posterior part of the lens capsule, a skin-like transparent structure, which surrounds the crystalline lens in the human eye. PCO is the most common postoperative complication following modern cataract surgery with implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL). The main symptoms of PCO are a decrease in visual acuity, 'cloudy', blurred vision and reduced contrast sensitivity. PCO is treated with a neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser to create a small opening in the opaque capsule and regain a clear central visual axis

We compared the posterior capsule opacification incidences at 5 years postoperatively and the neodymium-yttrium-aluminum-garnet capsulotomy rates at 10 years postoperatively for two types of intraocular lenses with different optical properties and shapes. This randomized, controlled, prospective, single-blinded study with intra-individual comparisons was conducted between July 21, 2009, and August 31, 2011, at the Dokkyo Medical University Hospital, Tochigi, Japan. Objective quantification of posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery with swept-source optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the application of swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and pentacam scheimpflug tomography in posterior capsule opacification (PCO) severity assessment. METHODS: The posterior capsule image region segmentation and adaptive threshold algorithm are used to process the SS-OCT scanned image to obtain the posterior capsule thickness (PCT). Scheimpflug tomography reconstructed and analysized by image J software can obtain the average gray value and evaluate the effectiveness with the two methods. Effects of dexamethasone on posterior capsule opacification-like changes in a rat lens explant model.

PURPOSE: Many patients whose sight is initially restored by cataract surgery eventually suffer secondary loss of vision because of posterior capsule opacification (PCO; after-cataract), a condition in which lens epithelial cells left behind at surgery become aberrant and migrate into the light path. The aim of this study was to determine whether dexamethasone (DEX), an anti-inflammatory agent widely used before and after cataract surgery, influences the behavior of lens cells under conditions relevant to PCO development. METHODS: An established rat PCO model was used in which explanted epithe

Zwitterionic modified and freeze-thaw reinforced foldable hydrogel as intraocular lens for posterior capsule opacification prevention.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a predominant postoperative complication, often leading to visual impairment due to the aberrant proliferation and adhesion of lens epithelial cells (LECs) and protein precipitates subsequent to intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. To address this clinical issue, a foldable and antifouling sharp-edged IOL implant based on naturally-derived cellulose hydrogel is synthesized. The mechanical strength and transparency of the hydrogel is enhanced via repeated freeze-thaw (FT) cycles. The incorporated zwitterionic modifications can remarkably prevent the inci
