The existence of ferric hydroxide links the carbon and nitrogen cycles by promoting nitrite-coupled methane anaerobic oxidation.

Microorganism-mediated anaerobic oxidation of methane can efficiently mitigate methane atmospheric emissions and is a key process linking the biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, and iron. The results showed that methane oxidation and nitrite removal rates in the CF were 1.12 and 1.28 times higher than those in CK, respectively, suggesting that ferric hydroxide can enhance nitrite-driven AOM. The biochemical process was mediated by the enrichment of methanogens, methanotrophs, and denitrifiers. Methanobacterium and Methanosarcina were positively correlated with Fe3+ and Fe2+, whereas Met

Pyrogenic Carbon Promotes Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane Coupled with Iron Reduction via the Redox-Cycling Mechanism.

Pyrogenic carbon (PC) can mediate electron transfer and thus catalyze biogeochemical processes to impact greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Here, we demonstrate that PC can contribute to mitigating GHG emissions by promoting the Fe(III)-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). It was found that the amendment PCs in microcosms dominated by Methanoperedenaceae performing Fe(III)-dependent AOM simultaneously promoted the rate of AOM and Fe(III) reduction with a consistent ratio close to the theoretical stoichiometry of 1:8. Further correlation analysis showed that the AOM rate was linearly co

Genome- and Community-Level Interaction Insights into Carbon Utilization and Element Cycling Functions of Hydrothermarchaeota in Hydrothermal Sediment.

Hydrothermal vents release reduced compounds and small organic carbon compounds into the surrounding seawater, providing essential substrates for microbial growth and bioenergy transformations. Despite the wide distribution of the marine benthic group E archaea (referred to as Hydrothermarchaeota) in the hydrothermal environment, little is known about their genomic repertoires and biogeochemical significance. Here, we studied four highly complete (>80%) metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from a black smoker chimney and the surrounding sulfur-rich sediments on the South Atlantic Mid-Ocean Ridg

New ways to break an old bond: the bacterial carbon-phosphorus hydrolases and their role in biogeochemical phosphorus cycling.

Phosphonates are organophosphorus molecules that contain the highly stable C-P bond, rather than the more common, and more labile, C-O-P phosphate ester bond. They have ancient origins but their biosynthesis is widespread among more primitive organisms and their importance in the contemporary biosphere is increasingly recognized; for example phosphonate-P is believed to play a particularly significant role in the productivity of the oceans. The microbial degradation of phosphonates was originally thought to occur only under conditions of phosphate limitation, mediated exclusively by the poorly

Vertical stratification of microbial communities and predicted carbon-cycling potential in Suaeda salsa salt-marsh sediments.

Suaeda salsa salt marshes are important blue carbon habitats in estuarine wetlands, but the vertical organization of microbial communities and their potential roles in carbon transformation remain insufficiently understood. In this study, sediments were collected from a S. salsa salt marsh in the Liao River estuary at three depth intervals: 0-10, 10-30, and 30-60 cm, with adjacent mudflat sediments used as a reference. Sediment physicochemical properties, carbon stocks, 16S rRNA gene sequences, community assembly processes, co-occurrence networks, and predicted functions were analyzed to asses

Iron-respiring bacteria mediate regulatory mechanisms and pathways of electron donors and acceptors in carbon and nitrogen cycles.

UNLABELLED: Iron-respiring bacteria play important roles in global material cycles owing to their electron transfer capabilities, yet their electron-transfer connections to carbon and nitrogen cycles in complex environments remain unclear. Through the investigation of sediments, this study found multidimensional associations between the abundance of iron-respiring bacteria and microbial community structure, as well as carbon and nitrogen cycles. At the community level, the abundance of iron-respiring bacteria showed negative correlations with certain populations, implying a potential influence

Soil texture controls bioplastic-induced greenhouse gas emissions and carbon-nitrogen cycling in agricultural soils.

Bioplastics (BPs) are increasingly used in agriculture, yet their behavior in soil and effects on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling depend strongly on soil conditions. This study evaluated the effects of three BPs (1% w/w; 400-700 μm) polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), polybutylene succinate (PBS), and polylactic acid (PLA) on soil C and N cycling, microbial activity, and greenhouse gas emissions in clayey and sandy agricultural soils during a 120-day incubation with four wetting-drying cycles (70-30% water-filled pore space). PHA produced the largest changes in soil biochemical processes includin

Effect of multiple calcination cycles on CO2 capture efficiency during carbonation of MgO in a mineral looping process.

Magnesium oxide (MgO) is considered as a potential sorbent for direct air capture of carbon dioxide in a looping process. Previous research on mineral looping for carbon capture from flue gas using MgO has shown deactivation of the sorbent with repeated cycles but repeated cycling for carbonation at ambient conditions has not been yet investigated. Here, we tested three cycles of carbonation for MgO nano-scale powders with different starting surface area. We find that carbonation efficiency is higher at higher surface area. No decrease in carbonation efficiency was observed with cycling, inste

Integrated life cycle assessment for sustainable agricultural land remediation: Full-chain analysis of environmental trade-offs and upstream carbon burdens.

Despite increasing attention being paid to the sustainability of agricultural land remediation, narrow system boundaries in existing assessments often lead to underestimation of life cycle environmental burdens, thereby overstating contribution to sustainable development. Here, we developed an integrated life cycle assessment framework that extends beyond the conventional focus on secondary impacts from energy and material use to include primary impacts from residual contaminant exposure and tertiary impacts from supply-chain activities. The framework was employed to evaluate the environmental

Life cycle assessment of vertical and horizontal flow constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment considering nitrogen and carbon greenhouse gas emissions.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is used to compare the environmental impacts of vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCW) and horizontal flow constructed wetlands (HFCW). The LCAs include greenhouse gas (N(2)O, CO(2) and CH(4)) emissions. Baseline constructed wetland designs are compared to different treatment performance scenarios and to conventional wastewater treatment at the materials acquisition, assembly and operation life stages. The LCAs suggest that constructed wetlands have less environmental impact, in terms of resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The VFCW is a less impact

Exogenous lactate ameliorates Aβ-induced energy deficit and neurotoxicity with increased mitochondrial TCA cycle carbon flux in SH-SY5Y cells.

A growing body of evidence has demonstrated the existence of metabolic dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), suggesting that deprivation of energy substrates impairs cellular dynamics. As glucose utilization declines in patients with AD, the need for alternative energy sources becomes crucial to sustain neuronal activities and prevent cell death induced by neurotoxic proteins, such as amyloid beta (Aβ) aggregates. In this context, lactate has been investigated as a potential alternative brain energy substrate in several studies, yet its impact on neuron

Estimating the Carbon Emissions of a Single Prostate-specific Antigen Test: Results from a Cradle-to-grave Life Cycle Assessment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The health care sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and assessments of the environmental impacts of health services are essential. We aimed to evaluate the environmental impact of a highly common but controversial urology-specific blood test: the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. METHODS: A cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment was performed to estimate the emissions of a single PSA test. Primary data collection included laboratory site assessment, disassembly, and weighing of materials. The primary outcome was GHG emissions in

[Expression of Cell Cycle, Oxidative Stress, and Apoptosis Related Genes Chek1, Hmox1, Casp7 in Rat Liver Exposed to Carbon Tetrachloride].

Carbon tetrachloride is a well-studied hepatotropic poison. Animal models of exposure to carbon tetrachloride resemble acute liver damage in humans. This paper presents the study of the expression of genes related to cell cycle control, apoptosis, and oxidative stress in a model of carbon tetrachloride-induced toxic hepatitis in rats. White mongrel male rats were injected with a 50% oil solution of carbon tetrachloride at a dose of 0.125-4.000 g/kg (experimental group) or olive oil (control group). The animals were decapitated 24 and 72 h after the administration of carbon tetrachloride, and t

Sensitivity of simulations of Plio-Pleistocene climate with the CLIMBER-2 Earth System Model to details of the global carbon cycle.

The Earth system model CLIMBER-2 has been used in past work to successfully reproduce the glacial/interglacial cycles of the Plio-Pleistocene and the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT) from predominantly 40 to 100 ky timescale oscillatory behavior as a function of declining volcanic outgassing and regolith removal. In this study, we further examine the sensitivity of this previous work to varying prescribed levels of volcanic outgassing and regolith extent and the long-term dynamics of the global carbon cycle, affecting the exchange and partitioning of carbon between different Earth system reser

Integrating commercial graphite with network-like carbon fibers for high-rate and long-term cycling K+-storage.

K can reversibly intercalate into graphite by forming KC8 (279 mA h g-1, ≈0.2 V) in conventional carbonate electrolytes, but the large ionic radius of K+ (1.38 Å) easily results in structural degradation and rapid capacity decay. Here, commercial graphite particles are directly electrospun into network-like carbon fibers, thus forming a flexible Gr@CNF membrane. This hybrid electrode configuration can efficiently withstand the volume expansion during K+ insertion. K||Gr@CNF half-cells can stably operate for over 800 cycles (running time of 170 days at C/3) and achieve fast K+-intercalation kin

Enhancing the Cycling Stability by Tuning the Chemical Bonding between Phosphorus and Carbon Nanotubes for Potassium-Ion Battery Anodes.

Phosphorus/carbon (P/C) composites as promising potassium-ion storage materials have been extensively investigated for its compound superiorities of high specific capacity and favorable electronic conductivity. However, the effects of different chemical bonding states between P and the carbon matrix for potassium-ion storage and cycling performance still need to be investigated. Herein, three P/C composites with different chemical bonding states were successfully fabricated through simply ball-milling red P with carboxylic group carbon nanotubes (CGCNTs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and reduced c
