Effective carbon footprint assessment strategy in fly ash geopolymer concrete based on adaptive boosting learning techniques.

In light of the growing need to mitigate climate change impacts, this study presents an innovative methodology combining ensemble machine learning with experimental data to accurately predict the carbon dioxide footprint (CO2-FP) of fly ash geopolymer concrete. The approach employs adaptive boosting to enhance decision tree regression (DTR) and support vector regression (SVR), resulting in a robust predictive framework. The models used key material features, including fly ash concentration, fine and coarse aggregates, superplasticizer, curing temperature, and alkali activator levels. These fea

Propofol total intravenous anaesthesia carbon footprint compared to inhalational anaesthesia in small animals undergoing lung lobectomy.

Climate change poses an increasing threat to both human and animal health. The provision of both human and animal healthcare is associated with high carbon emissions, and the use of volatile anaesthetic agents has been demonstrated to be particularly carbon intensive. In human healthcare, the use of total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) has been demonstrated to generate less carbon emissions than inhalational anaesthetic techniques; however, this has not been assessed in the veterinary context. This retrospective study aimed to assess the carbon emissions associated with inhalational anaesthesi

From cadavers to virtual reality: a carbon footprint analysis of surgical simulation for lumbar spine surgery.

BACKGROUND: Simulation plays a fundamental role in lumbar spine surgery training. While many studies focus on the carbon footprint of surgeries, limited information is available on the environmental impact of surgical training. Today, surgical simulators can be categorized into three groups: biological specimens (cadavers and animal models), synthetic physical simulators (bench-top models, 3D-printed, high-fidelity models), and virtual simulators (screen-based and Virtual Reality (VR) simulators). This study analyzed the carbon footprint of the main simulators available for lumbar spine surger

Carbon footprint of disposable, hybrid, and reusable trocars in diverse hospital settings: a life cycle assessment.

BACKGROUND: Trocars are essential instruments in laparoscopic surgery, including high-volume procedures such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Although reusable trocars are generally assumed to be more environmentally sustainable than disposable or hybrid variants, previous life cycle assessments (LCAs) have relied on manufacturer-supplied data and rarely account for variation in hospital practices. This study provides the first LCA of disposable, hybrid, and reusable trocars based on independently verified material composition and multiple real-world clinical processing settings. METHODS: A c

Energy efficiency and carbon footprint assessment in artisanal and small-scale mining processing plants in Ecuador.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) plays a significant role in global mineral production, particularly in developing countries, providing employment and supporting local economies. However, ASM is characterized by high energy intensity, inefficient processing technologies, and a substantial carbon footprint, primarily driven by reliance on electricity and diesel-powered machinery. This study evaluates key energy indicators including Gross Energy Requirement, Energy Intensity Index, and CO2 emissions to identify patterns and inefficiencies in energy consumption across ASM operations. Carbon Footprint of Laparoscopic Appendicectomy: A Prospective Observational Study at a Tertiary Care NHS Trust Hospital.

Introduction Climate change is a significant global challenge as a result of rising greenhouse gas emissions. The National Health Service (NHS), as one of the biggest contributors to the United Kingdom's emissions, has a net-zero carbon emissions target. Operating theatres have a large resource burden in hospitals, and the laparoscopic appendicectomy (LA) is one of the most commonly performed procedures. As of yet, the laparoscopic appendicectomy has not been effectively carbon footprinted. Aims The objective of this study is to calculate the carbon footprint of the laparoscopic appendicectomy

Environmental impact of computer-aided diagnosis in colonoscopy: a carbon footprint assessment of a prospective study cohort.

BACKGROUND: The environmental impact of computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) in colonoscopy is unknown. The potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by limiting unnecessary polypectomies may be offset by emissions associated with CADx devices. We quantified and compared the carbon footprint of colonoscopy with and without CADx. METHODS: Life-cycle carbon emissions associated with endoscopic snares, polyp traps, histopathology, and CADx devices were estimated using life-cycle assessment software. The effect of CADx was estimated by the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions related to outco
