Houttuynia cordata (HC) has been commonly used as many traditional remedies in local areas of Japan. Although many pharmacological activities of HC have been reported, the mechanism underlying the effect of HC remains unknown. We conducted the interview survey in Japan to verify how HC was actually used. Knoxia roxburghii is a well-known medicinal plant that is widely distributed in southern China and Southeast Asia. Research on the second plague pandemic that swept over Europe from the fourteenth to nineteenth centuries mainly relies on the exegesis of contemporary texts and is prone to interpretive bias. Results of diagnosing pyelonephritis in 106 patients using ultrasonography, CT and thermovision were analyzed. Purulent pyelonephritis (PP) was diagnosed in 57 patients, serous pyelonephritis--in 49 patients. The sensitivity of ultrasonography in the diagnosing of PP was more than 80%, that of CT--90%. Five hundred and forty-two cases of pyoderma were investigated to study bacterial aetiology and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns. Of these 65.87% cases were of primary pyoderma and the rest were of secondary pyoderma. A Chinese herbal medicine Lu-Shen-Wan, which contains 6 ingredients, is sometimes applied topically to treat boils, carbuncles and other skin infections. 2 elderly women developed a rash after applying Lu-Shen-Wan.
