Primary Merkel cell carcinoma of the parotid gland.

Primary Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a neuroendocrine tumor that typically affects older whites. It usually originates in the dermis, but in rare instances it has arisen in other primary sites, including the oral mucosa and the parotid gland. Explanations for the presence of MCC in these atypical locations have included theories of malignant transformation and neuroendocrine migration. We describe the case of a 35-year-old white woman who had an MCC in the parotid gland and no evidence of any other primary cutaneous lesion. A left superficial parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation was

Merkel cell carcinoma with squamous and sarcomatous differentiation.

Merkel cell carcinoma is an aggressive neuroendocrine tumor historically thought to arise from neural crest-derived cutaneous neuroendocrine cells. Recent evidence supports an epidermal origin. We present a case of Merkel cell carcinoma arising on the upper arm of a 94-year-old woman that had multiple morphologic patterns: small cells typical of Merkel cell carcinoma, malignant cells with squamous differentiation and malignant poorly differentiated spindle cells. Subsequent metastatic disease in regional lymph nodes showed only the small cells and the malignant spindle cells. To our knowledge,

Merkel cell carcinoma: CT findings in 12 patients.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report is to determine CT imaging findings in patients with Merkel cell carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-three CT scans in 12 patients with biopsy-proven Merkel cell carcinoma were retrospectively reviewed with regard to size, location, and attenuation of primary skin lesions and visceral and lymph node metastases. Findings that were present in 12 patients form the basis of this report. RESULTS: Primary skin lesions were manifested on CT scans in four patients as cutaneous nodules that were hyper- or isodense in relation to muscle. Sites of metastases in

Rare hepatic metastasis of Merkel cell carcinoma masquerading as hepatocellular carcinoma.

A 52-year-old male was diagnosed with primary liver cancer in June 2021 after experiencing abdominal pain and bloating. He had previously undergone resection for a Merkel cell tumor in March 2021, with no metastasis found. Three months later, imaging suggested a liver mass consistent with liver cancer. Lab tests showed elevated hepatitis B surface antigen (>130 IU/ml) and alpha-fetoprotein (24.54 IU/ml), and the imaging features resembled hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Finally,it was diagnosed as liver metastasis of Merkel cell carcinoma by pathology.

Merkel cell carcinoma co-existent with sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelid.

Merkel cell carcinoma is occasionally associated with other types of cutaneous malignancies including squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and lentigo maligna. We report a case of Merkel cell carcinoma co-existent with sebaceous carcinoma in the right upper eyelid of a 61-year-old Japanese man. Histopathologically, the resected tumor consisted of three nodules located in the tarsal plate, showing two distinct histopathological types. Two nodules were Merkel cell carcinoma and located in the proximal part of the palpebral conjunctiva. The third was sebaceous carcinoma located in the di

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast with Merkel cell carcinoma-like features.

A case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast with Merkel cell carcinoma-like features occurring in a 38-year-old female is described. A 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.3 cm tumor in the upper-outer quadrant of the right breast was ill-defined, yellowish white and rubbery. Microscopically, the tumor was characterized by a diffuse proliferation of non-cohesive round cells. The tumor cells had round nuclei with finely dispersed chromatin and inconspicuous nucleoli. The cytoplasm was generally scant, pale to eosinophilic, and argyrophilic. There were scattered foci of small nests or intraductal proliferations.

[Merkel cell carcinoma: cutaneous manifestation of a highly malignant pre-/pro-B cell neoplasia? : Novel concept about the cellular origin of Merkel cell carcinoma].

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a relatively rare but highly malignant non-melanoma skin cancer of the elderly and immunosuppressed patients. The discovery of the Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) in 2008 significantly impacted the understanding of the etiopathogenesis of MCC. MCPyV is clonally integrated into the MCC genome and approximately 80% of MCC are MCPyV-positive. Recent results of clinical trials using blockade of the PD-1 immune modulatory pathway are promising for the future treatment of MCC. Despite this major progress of the past few years, the cellular origin of MCC still remains

Radiotherapy in the Multidisciplinary Management of Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

The management of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) requires multidisciplinary care for optimal patient outcomes. Radiotherapy (RT) is most commonly used as adjuvant therapy to improve locoregional control in patients with MCC who undergo surgery. Additionally, it can sometimes be used as definitive monotherapy for patients who decline or are not candidates for surgery and as palliative treatment in those with metastatic MCC. This article discusses the indications, treatment considerations, and recommended dose prescriptions for RT in the management of early- and advanced-stage disease. Considerable

Oropharyngeal metastasis of a Merkel cell carcinoma of the skin.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine tumor of the skin characterized by frequent local and regional recurrence, a high incidence of distant metastases and therefore a high mortality. Here, we report a case of an oropharyngeal metastasis of a Merkel cell carcinoma of the skin localized at the left base of the tongue causing dysphagia and the sensation of globus pharyngeus. The unusual metastatic site is presented, and diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

Ampullary somatostatinoma in a patient with Merkel cell carcinoma.

A 59-yr-old white man with Merkel cell carcinoma of his right leg status post extensive skin resection and chemotherapy had dilated hepatic and common bile ducts on a routine follow-up abdominal CT scan. A 1.9-cm ampullary mass was appreciated on endoscopy. Histology showed psammoma bodies and positive immunoperoxidase staining consistent with a somatostatinoma. Merkel cell tumors and somatostatinomas are extremely rare neuroendocrine tumors derived from neural crest cells. Associations have been found between somatostatinomas and other islet cell tumors with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndr

The epidemiology of Merkel cell carcinoma in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive skin cancer with poor outcomes. Many questions remain regarding its epidemiology. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the epidemiology of MCC. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, population-based epidemiologic study of all cases of MCC from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between 2000 and 2021. Incidence and mortality rates were calculated using SEER∗Stat software and SEER 12 (1992-2021) and joinpoint analysis was used to assess changing trends. Cause-specific Cox regression was used for competing risk an

Merkel cell carcinoma of the breast: A case report.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the breast is a very rare and aggressive type of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast (NECB) that typically occurs in older and immunocompromised individuals often presenting as a large palpable mass (Albright et al., 20181). Imaging features of MCC are similar to other NECBs, typically appearing as an oval circumscribed mass on mammography and as an irregular mass with increased vascularity on sonography (Jeon et al., 20142). While both MCC and primary NECB demonstrate positive immunostaining for synaptophysin, obtaining immunohistochemical stains for specific

Merkel cell carcinoma: a distinct lesion of the eyelid.

Merkel cell carcinoma (trabecular cell carcinoma) is a rare, distinct, primitive, neuroendocrine malignancy of the skin, usually affecting elderly patients. It develops from Merkel cells and nearly one out of every 10 Merkel cell carcinomas occurs in the eyelids and periocular region. The tumor manifests itself clinically as a bulging lesion near the lid margin, painless, reddish colored with teleangiectatic blood vessels on the surface. Histologically, the tumor can mimic malignant lymphoma, undifferentiated melanoma, sebaceous carcinoma or cutaneous metastases of pulmonary microcytoma. Immun

Detection of wildtype Merkel cell polyomavirus genomic sequence and VP1 transcription in a subset of Merkel cell carcinoma.

AIMS: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is frequently caused by the Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV). Characteristic for these virus-positive (VP) MCC is MCPyV integration into the host genome and truncation of the viral oncogene Large T antigen (LT), with full-length LT expression considered as incompatible with MCC growth. Genetic analysis of a VP-MCC/trichoblastoma combined tumour demonstrated that virus-driven MCC can arise from an epithelial cell. Here we describe two further cases of VP-MCC combined with an adnexal tumour, i.e. one trichoblastoma and one poroma. METHODS AND RESULTS: Whole-gen

Intratumoral Immunotherapy-The Future of Treating Merkel Cell Carcinoma?

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) represents a rare but highly aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer with limited systemic therapy options for patients who fail or are ineligible for immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Intratumoral (IT) immunotherapy has emerged as a promising strategy, leveraging the accessibility of tumor lesions and their inherent capacity to trigger immune responses, known as abscopal effects. This review synthesizes the current evidence on IT approaches in MCC, including Toll-like receptor agonists, cytokines, and oncolytic viruses, and highlights their distinct mechanisms of
