Since small cell carcinoma is a treatable disease, with surgery being beneficial in a few cases and with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy contributing to prolonged survival in patients with inoperable disease, it is essential that the clinical and pathologic features of small cell carcinoma be quickly recognized in a newly presenting patient so that appropriate therapy may be offered.

Small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder (SCCB) is a rare and highly aggressive neuroendocrine neoplasm that poses significant diagnostic challenges, particularly on urine cytology. We report a case of a 68-year-old man with painless hematuria in whom SCCB was initially detected on voided urine cytology. Cytologic evaluation revealed small malignant cells with high nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratios, nuclear moulding, finely granular chromatin, necrotic background and apoptotic debris, raising suspicion for a neuroendocrine carcinoma. Immunohistochemical studies performed on the urine cell block

A 72-year-old man presented with gross hematuria. Cystoscopy showed a non-papillary tumor at the right side of the posterior wall. Transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT) was performed. Pathologic findings demonstrated superficial transitional cell carcinoma (TCC). However, recurrent tumors were detected at the same location after 69 months' follow up. TURBT was done for the biopsy and pathologic examination showed muscle-invasive TCC. After two courses of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (MVAC), we performed radical cystectomy with Hautmann's continent reservoir. Pathologic findings reve

Pleomorphic (spindle) cell carcinoma, also known as monophasic sarcomatoid carcinoma, is a rare primary pulmonary malignancy. This type of tumor shows concurrent presence of malignant epithelial and homologous sarcomatoid spindle cell components by co-expressing cytokeratin and vimentin in various degrees. Sixteen cases (four central endobronchial lesions and 12 peripheral parenchymal masses) were studied clinicopathologically. Men were affected far more frequently than women (13:3). The patients were between 56 and 80 years of age. The disease is strongly associated with smoking. Among seven

INTRODUCTION: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) most commonly metastasizes to the lungs and shares risk factors with lung cancer. However, primary lung cancer in patients with metastatic RCC is underrecognized and poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients at UT Southwestern Medical Center with both metastatic RCC and primary non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Individuals with ICD codes for RCC and lung cancer between October 2006-September 2024 were reviewed and adjudicated by a multidisciplinary team.
RESULTS: Among 60 patients with

Undifferentiated/dedifferentiated endometrial carcinoma is an uncommon malignant neoplasm of the endometrium that can present as a diagnostic challenge, especially in a metastatic setting. We present a case of a 70-year-old woman with a prior endometrial biopsy diagnosed as endometrioid carcinoma, FIGO Grade 2. Chest computerized tomography showed moderate to severe centrilobular emphysema with a 3 mm nodule in the right upper lobe and posterior mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Fine needle aspiration smears of the mediastinal lymph node showed predominantly single and loosely cohesive tumor cells

BACKGROUND: S100A7 is a secreted protein and its overexpression has been previously associated with carcinogenesis of certain cancers. This study was undertaken to investigate the possibility that overexpression of S100A7 protein might be detected in the sera of patients with lung cancer.
METHODS: RNA and protein levels of S100A7 were examined in 60 pairs of frozen lung cancer tissues by RT-PCR and western blot. The specific expression of this protein and its cellular distribution were investigated in 145 paraffin embedded lung cancer samples, six benign lung disease and 21 normal lung tissue

The aim of this study was to determine the most significant cytologic features to differentiate small cell carcinoma (SCC) from poorly differentiated non-small cell carcinoma (NSCC) in bronchial lavage specimens. Bronchial lavage specimens from 35 SCC cases and 63 poorly differentiated NSCC cases were examined and the cytologic parameters reviewed retrospectively. Thirty-five cytologic features considered useful in differential diagnosis were assessed. Statistical analysis indicated that salt and pepper chromatin, small cell size and nuclear molding have more than 90% sensitivity and 70% speci

BACKGROUND: Histopathological transformation between different types of lung cancer cells has been reported following a variety of anti-tumor treatments. Examples include transformation from lung adenocarcinoma to squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) and transformation from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to small cell lung cancer (SCLC).
CASE REPORT: A patient with intermittent hemoptysis for 2 days underwent a computed tomography (CT) scan that revealed interstitial pneumonia in addition to two enlarged paratracheal lymph nodes: one on the right (4R) and one on the left (4L) measuring 10 and 7

Combined small cell carcinoma (SCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) of the oropharynx is extremely rare and shows an aggressive clinical course. There are only 5 reported cases of combined SCC and SqCC in the English language literature. Here, we report a 59-year-old male presenting with a right tonsillar mass. The mass was biopsied, and the histological findings showed a proliferation of small-sized tumor cells with scant cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for neuroendocrine markers (synaptophysin, chromogranin A, and CD56). Our first diagnosis was tonsillar sm

Synchronous multiple primary lung cancers (SMPLC) are separate tumors presenting at the same time with different histology. We present a rare case of a 64-year-old patient with a combination of small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) and squamous carcinoma in two different sites with metastasis of the SCLC in the mediastinal lymph node. The SCLC diagnosis was performed via bronchoscopy, and the other diagnosis via computed tomography-guided transthoracic biopsy. It is often difficult to distinguish a synchronous tumor from intrapulmonary metastases. To date, there are no guidelines for the treatment

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a recently recognized variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with a predilection to occur in the tongue base, hypopharynx, and supraglottic larynx. In smal biopsy specimens, these tumors can be difficult to distinguish from small cell undifferentiated carcinoma (SCUC) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). Monoclonal antibodies reactive with cytokeratin (AE1/AE3, 34betaE12, Cam 5.2) as well as a variety of other cellular antigens (vimentin, actin, desmin, chromogranin, synaptophysin, CD57, neuron-specific enolase [NSE], and S100) were used in an immuno

The presence of "crushing" artifacts in histological sections is a very common finding and represents a potentially major pitfall for the surgical pathologist, particularly in small biopsy specimens. Microscopically, it appears as bluish clusters in which the cellular details are not recognizable. Here the authors report examples of this phenomenon that have been reported or that they have personally observed and emphasize some diagnostic clue to avoid its overinterpretation and the dire clinical consequences that this may entail.

A collision tumor refers to the coexistence of two diagnostically distinct tumors in a common anatomic space. Collision tumors are rare in the oral and maxillofacial region. The present study reported on the case of an 82-year-old female with a collision tumor in the maxillary sinus consisting of small cell carcinoma (SmCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Computed tomography (CT) imaging revealed a mass in the right maxillary sinus. The lesion exhibited heterogeneous low signal intensity (SI) on T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), high SI on short T1 inversion recovery and heterogeneous solid enhan

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive malignancy characterized by rapid proliferation and high metastatic potential. It is characterized by universal inactivation of and RB1, overexpression of the MYC family and dysregulation of multiple oncogenic signaling pathways. Among different patients, SCLCs are similar at the genetic level but exhibit significant heterogeneity at the molecular level. The classification of SCLC has evolved from a simple neuroendocrine (NE)/non-neuroendocrine (non-NE) classification system to a transcription factor-based molecular subtype system; lineage plastic

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNC) of the larynx is an exceptionally rare subset of laryngeal carcinoma with a clinically aggressive course and poor prognosis. Long-term survival is rare, and treatment strategies remain nonstandardized due to limited data. In this report, the authors present a case of a 51-year-old male who presented with stage IVa laryngeal SCNC and no distant metastasis, treated with a combination of platinum-based chemotherapy and radiation, who has survived for more than 5 years. This case represented 1 of few reported instances of extended disease-free survival in

This article describes a patient who presented to the ED with persistent nausea and vomiting, constipation, weight loss, and a new complaint of an external hemorrhoid and hematochezia with stooling. Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation included imaging studies that showed extensive metastatic disease but did not identify a primary neoplasm. Biopsy of the external hemorrhoid revealed small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the anal canal.

A broad spectrum of paraneoplastic dermatoses is associated with lung cancer. We report herein a 56-year-old man who presented an association of erythroderma, acquired ichthyosis, palmo-plantar keratoderma, hypereosinophilia and hyper IgE. In light of these clinical and biological assessments an underlying malignancy had been suspected. A thoracic, abdominal and pelvic computed tomography showed a left hilar mass. The patient underwent a left pneumonectomy and the histological study had confirmed a non-small cell lung cancer. Recognition of cutaneous paraneoplastic syndromes is important since
