Background and Clinical Significance: Papillary Fibroelastoma is a benign primary cardiac tumor, commonly located in a valvular position, predominantly on the aortic valve. Case Presentation: We present a 73-year-old male patient with a medical history of chronic lymphatic leukemia, kidney failure, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea. In a routinely performed echocardiogram an abnormal structure in the left ventricle was found. The patient presented completely asymptomatically at the time of examination. A cardiac magnetic resonance-scan provided further information about the size and locali

BACKGROUND: Papillary fibroelastoma, generally affecting the valve endocardium, is one of the most common benign cardiac tumours. Although rarely reported, atypical localization of such tumours complexifies diagnosis and might negatively impact patient outcomes due to late detection.
CASE SUMMARY: We present the case of a 69-year-old female patient presenting for a check-up consultation and reporting symptoms of dysesthesia, aphasia, and dizziness. The patient had a history of atrial fibrillation on anticoagulation with rivaroxaban starting 6 years prior to presentation. Further examination u

Papillary fibroelastoma (PFE) accounts for approximately 8% of benign primary cardiac tumors. PFE frequently develops in the left heart system, such as the aortic valve and the mitral valve. We report a case of a giant PFE in the right ventricle. The patient was an 83-year-old woman with a history of chronic atrial fibrillation, diabetes, and hypertension. She had experienced palpitation and shortness of breath for several years. A giant mobile tumor was observed in the right ventricle by transthoracic echocardiography, and its extirpation was performed. Intraoperatively, a giant tumor of 3 cm

BACKGROUND: Papillary fibroelastoma (PFE) is the most common primary benign cardiac tumor. Because PFEs have the potential to embolize, they often are surgically excised. Prior studies have suggested that postoperative recurrence of PFE is rare or does not occur. We aimed to determine the rate at which PFEs recurred after surgical removal and to identify any risk factors associated with recurrence.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified all patients from a single center with pathologically proven PFE, treated from January 1995 through December 2018. Patients were included in the study if they

Papillary fibroelastoma is a benign cardiac tumour that most commonly presents as an incidental finding on imaging but may present with an acute neurological event due to embolic phenomena. We report a 51-year-old female who presented with focal neurology of the right hand that lasted for 30 minutes. Her initial investigations including CT-brain were unremarkable, and given her low-risk profile for stroke she was discharged for routine outpatient workup of possible transient ischaemic attack. Transthoracic echo detected a large mobile mass attached to the left ventricular wall. This was mistak

Papillary fibroelastoma, a benign cardiac tumor, is a rare clinical condition. Before the echocardiography era, the diagnosis was often occasional, especially during other cardiac procedures; but nowadays it has improved with the advent of higher-resolution imaging technology. The clinical presentation can vary from asymptomatic to severe complications such as cerebrovascular or ischemic events due to tumor embolization. We present the case of a 33-year-old female with a papillary fibroelastoma on the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve undergoing clinical examination for claudicatio intermitt

A 66-year-old woman was admitted to our department with an 11-month history of multiple transient ischemic attacks and strokes. A 2-dimensional echocardiographic study revealed an intracardiac tumor attached both to the chordae and to the anterolateral papillary muscle of the mitral valve. The patient underwent excision of the tumor, which necessitated concomitant mitral valve replacement. She remains free of symptoms 1 year postoperatively, with no echocardiographic evidence of recurrence of the tumor. To date, 19 cases of surgically treated papillary fibroelastomas of the mitral valve have b

BACKGROUND: A papillary fibroelastoma of the aortic valve has been reported as a rare cause of myocardial ischaemia. An advanced combined interventional and surgical approach leading to sufficient therapy for the patient is presented in this case report.
CASE SUMMARY: A 56-year-old female patient presented in an emergency room of a hospital with an acute coronary syndrome. Over 1.5 years, recurrent stable angina had been known in the patient and significant coronary artery disease has already been ruled out in a previous coronary angiogram. The patient was immediately transferred to the cathe

A woman in her mid-seventies with a history of chronic atrial fibrillation (AF), coronary artery disease, polymyalgia rheumatica, and type 2 diabetes was found in a semi-comatose state in her home. In the emergency room, she presented with left arm weakness and aphasia. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed multiple acute infarcts attributed to cardiac emboli, although transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) did not detect cardiac thrombi. Following extensive rehabilitation, she was readmitted with chest pain and dyspnea, which were thought to be related to a bradycardia-induced heart

BACKGROUND: Aortic valve myxomas are exceptionally rare benign cardiac tumors with substantial embolic potential. Their imaging appearance may overlap with more common valvular tumors, creating diagnostic uncertainty.
CASE SUMMARY: A 42-year-old woman presented with aphasia and right arm weakness from recurrent embolic cerebral infarctions. Evaluation excluded hypercoagulable disorders, venous thromboembolism, and intracardiac shunting. Echocardiography identified a small mass on the right coronary cusp of the aortic valve, initially suspected to be papillary fibroelastoma. Surgical excision

A patient, 68-year-old female, underwent open mitral commissurotomy (OMC) for rheumatic mitral stenosis in April, 1979. In July of 1992, during the postoperative follow-up echocardiogram showed 8 x 7 mm mitral subvalvular tumor mass and mitral restenosis. Then, mitral valve replacement was performed using prosthetic valve (Carbomedics #25 mm). The tumor was located on the top of postero-medial papillary muscle and its chordae, and histologically was diagnosed as benign papillary fibroelastoma. Based on the findings of periodic echocardiogram, the tumor doubling time was estimated to be 283 day

PURPOSE: We describe a central retinal artery occlusion with cilioretinal sparing in a young male patient who was found to have mitral valve papillary fibroelastoma.
METHODS: At the initial examination, a 33-year-old Hispanic man had visual acuity of 20/200 in his left eye, and 2 weeks later, visual acuity improved to 20/20. Diagnosis required transesophageal echocardiography to localize the lesion.
RESULTS: Mitral valve papillary fibroelastoma involving the mitral valve was successfully treated with tumor resection.
CONCLUSION: Routine echocardiography should be performed in all patients p

Papillary fibroelastoma (PFE) is a benign, rare, gelatinous tumour derived from the endocardium, primarily the cardiac valves, which is usually diagnosed by high resolution echocardiography. Although rarely clinically symptomatic, PFEs have a potential for coronary ischaemia, systemic embolisation with neurologic symptoms, and sometimes valvar dysfunction. There are reports of coronary occlusion and even sudden cardiac death due to a ball valve phenomenon on the coronary ostia. This report describes the characteristics of a PFE with multidetector 16 slice computed tomography and 1.5 Tesla card

Papillary fibroelastomas (PFE) are benign neoplasms, mostly located on valvular surfaces with high embolic potential. This study presents a 27-year single institutional experience on surgical treatment of PFE in an adult patient- cohort with long-term follow-up. This study was approved by the institutional review board. Date and number of IRB approval: 11/23/2017, Institutional Review Board approval number A2014-0149. The need for individual patient consent was waived. We retrospectively evaluated all patients who underwent cardiac surgery for suspected space-occupying lesions in the observati

Approximately 90% of primary paediatric cardiac tumours are benign lesions. Depending on their location and size, benign cardiac tumours may cause inflow and outflow obstructions, cyanosis, valvular insufficiencies, myocardial ischaemia, associated dysfunction, systemic embolisation, arrhythmias, and even sudden death. Decision-making and timing for surgery can be challenging in children. Herein, we present an asymptomatic 11-year-old girl with papillary fibroelastoma in the mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary valves, discussing the decision-making process and successful surgical management.

An accessory papillary muscle is an uncommon congenital anomaly usually found incidentally on routine cardiac imaging. While frequently asymptomatic, it is occasionally associated with mitral regurgitation, left ventricular dynamic outflow obstruction and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy1 and it is important to differentiate it from other pathological processes including papillary fibroelastoma, left ventricle thrombus, hemangioma, a single papillary muscle with a parachute mitral valve and a left ventricle false tendon. The clinical implication of these findings varies according to the degree of l

Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma is a rare benign tumor which involves the heart valves and may cause thromboembolism or mechanical interference with valvular function. The case is presented of an asymptomatic, 22-year-old man in whom a fibroelastoma was localized on the ventricular aspect of the right coronary leaflet of the aortic valve. The tumor was identified during transthoracic echocardiography performed to monitor a mitral valve prolapse that had occurred at the age of 16 years. The patient underwent surgical intervention by means of a minimally invasive thoracotomy. The postoperative c

Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas (CPFs) are rare benign cardiac tumors more often involving the left-sided valves and related with threatening embolic complications. We report the case of a 35-year-old woman presenting with relapsing-remitting chest pain and elevated cardiac troponins. After a negative coronary angiography, an integrated imaging assessment based on echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance showed a pedunculated mass on the aortic valve causing an intermittent obstructive engagement of the right coronary ostium. A tailored surgical treatment was performed and the histopat
