Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is thought to be the causative agent of adult T-cell leukemia/ lymphoma (ATL). This virus infection is endemic in southwestern Japan, parts of Africa and the Caribbean Islands. We examined sera of 1645 subjects of Liaoning province, northeastern China to detect HTLV-I carriers in an effort to reveal the migratory route taken by the early Japanese (Jomon people). As a result, all sera were found to be negative as tested by particle-agglutination (PA), immunofluorescence (IF), enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent (ELISA) and Western blotting methods. This sugg

OBJECTIVES: Social isolation is a major risk factor for poor physical and mental health among older adults. This study investigates the correlates of objective social isolation among older African Americans, Black Caribbean immigrants, and non-Hispanic Whites.
METHODS: The analysis is based on the older subsample (n = 1,439) of the National Survey of American Life. There are eight indicators of objective social isolation: no contact with neighbors, neighborhood groups, friends, family members, religious congregation members, not being married and no romantic involvement, living alone, and not

To date, published epidemiological studies of parasitic infections in humans in the Caribbean region are very limited. Here, we report the seroprevalence of five parasitic pathogens, including Ascaris lumbricoides, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Schistosoma mansoni, and Toxocara canis in 435 serum samples collected between 2008 and 2011 from pregnant women in ten Caribbean islands. We tested the serum samples for IgG antibodies against the five parasites by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Among them, 66.2 % were serologically positive for at least one parasite. The most pre

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety disproportionately affects people with epilepsy (PWE) and leads to poor outcomes. Yet, risk factors are not well understood especially among underserved groups. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify epilepsy-specific predictors of anxiety disorders in predominantly African American and Caribbean American PWE.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The prevalence of anxiety disorders was established via diagnostic interview (Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI)). We identified the extent to which aspects of seizure burden (seizure frequency, seizure severity, convu

OBJECTIVES: Apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) polymorphism is associated with the lipid profile and cardio-vascular disease. However, these relationships vary between ethnic groups. We evaluated, for the first time in an Afro-Caribbean population, the distribution of APOE polymorphisms and their associations with coronary artery disease (CAD), the lipid profile and other cardio-metabolic risk factors.
METHODS: We studied 712 Afro-Caribbean subjects including 220 with documented CAD and 492 healthy subjects. TaqMan assays were performed to genotype rs7412 and rs429358, the two variants that determi

BACKGROUND: It is not clear how respiratory morbidity during early childhood varies across ethnic groups in the UK. This article seeks to determine whether asthma and wheeze illnesses during early childhood differ across ethnic groups and what factors explain observed differences.
METHODS: Data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study on 14,630 children were analyzed from the second sweep of interviews. Parental interviews were conducted when the cohort member was aged approximately 3(1/2) years. Data collected included the occurrence of asthma and wheezing symptoms, biological and socio-economic

A few years ago, I was privileged to visit the Republic of Cuba as a summer vacation. Officially, this Spanish island is the largest island in the Caribbean, with more than 12 million people. It is only second as being most populous after Hispaniola with its people, culture and customs. Havana is the capital and Cuba's largest city. The United States lies to the immediate north only about 95 miles away, and the Bahamas and Mexico to the west, the Cayman Islands and Jamaica are on the southern end, and Haiti and the Dominion Republic are in the southeastern area. The history of this island is t

This last decade has seen a resurgence of yellow fever (YF) in historical endemic regions and repeated attempts of YF introduction in YF-free countries such as the Asia-Pacific region and the Caribbean. Infected travellers are the main entry routes in these regions where competent mosquito vectors proliferate in appropriate environmental conditions. With the discovery of the 17D vaccine, it was thought that YF would be eradicated. Unfortunately, it was not the case and, contrary to dengue, chikungunya and Zika, factors that cotribute to YF transmission remain under investigation. Today, all th

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) has been reported rarely in people of African descent. The prevalence in the Afro-Caribbean population of the Netherlands Antilles is suspected to be high. A family screening in this population was done to arrive at a point prevalence and to identify patients with pulmonary involvement. By clinical history and physical examination, 219 persons over age twelve with a first-degree relative with HHT were screened. The diagnosis was based on the new diagnostic criteria [Shovlin et al., 2000]. Chest-roentgenogram and pulse-oximetry or measurement of arter

Epidemics of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika have been threatening the Caribbean. Since risk communication (RC) plays a fundamental role in preventing and controlling diseases understanding how RC works is essential for enabling risk-reducing behavior. This multimethod qualitative study compares news reports with local's and health professional's perspectives, currently lacking in RC research. It was found that RC strategies were obstructed by a lack of governmental structure, organization, and communication. The content analysis showed that the majority of newspaper articles contained negative

Ciguatera, a form of fish poisoning with a pantropical distribution, has been a recognized health problem in the Caribbean and the Pacific for centuries (in the decade from 1973 to 1983 for the island Pacific region as a whole, reported incidence, conservatively 20% of actual incidence, was 97/100,000). Island peoples in subsistence communities have developed strategies to minimize its impact. These strategies are less effective when people move to towns, cities and wage labor. The existence of ciguatoxic fish, which are indistinguishable from those that are not, has serious implications for d

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the prevalence of Ancylostoma in dogs in the Caribbean. In view of the number of owned free-roaming and feral dogs within the islands and the ideal subtropical climate for parasite development and environmental survival, Ancylostoma could pose a threat to the health of the dogs as well as a zoonotic risk to people.
METHODS: To determine whether generalities about Ancylostoma in dogs in the Caribbean could be made and to obtain a better understanding of the prevalence, published (Scielo, Scopus, and PubMed databases) and gray (e.g., student theses, conference

Annonaceae fruits such as soursop (Annona muricata) may worsen symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) in tropical regions. Here, we investigate whether PD is more severe in an Annonaceae-exposed compared with a nonexposed population. Motor and cognitive symptoms of two PD groups (Caribbean, N = 74; mainland France, N = 104) were compared after imputation, propensity matching, and multivariate adjustment according to age, disease duration, education, and dopaminergic therapy. Ninety-six percent of Caribbean (71/74) but none of interviewed mainland France (0/20) PD patients had been exposed to Ann

INTRODUCTION: Recommended treatments for patients with localized high-risk prostate cancer include radiotherapy with long-term hormone therapy and radical prostatectomy with lymph node dissection. Data regarding these treatments, for patients of African ancestry, are limited. This study aims to compare oncologic outcomes in an Afro-Caribbean population.
METHODS: This monocentric retrospective study included 169 patients treated for localized high-risk prostate cancer with either radical prostatectomy or radiotherapy combined with long-term hormone therapy between January 1, 2016, and December

BACKGROUND: The underrepresentation of ethnic minorities and low-income groups in primary care (PC) research hinders the development of effective treatments for diverse populations.
AIM: To develop a framework that general practice staff and researchers can use to improve the participation of underserved groups in PC research.
METHOD: This study was undertaken across 10 GP practices in South London serving 150 658 patients. Practices are distributed across ethnically diverse and highly deprived communities. A mixed-methods approach was utilised. Retrospective data were collected on patient p

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection disrupts brain function, producing cognitive deficits that impair daily functioning, reduce quality of life, and worsen clinical outcomes. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of neurocognitive impairment among people with HIV in Panama, and to investigate the association between cognitive function with socio-clinical factors and biomarkers. A community-based cross-sectional study recruited 193 and 203 people with and without HIV, respectively. Participants provided blood samples and underwent a clinical interview comprised of functionality

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic emerged as an unprecedented challenge for health care systems across the world, disproportionately impacting immigrant and racialized populations. Canadian African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities represent some of the populations considered most vulnerable in terms of their susceptibility to health-related risks, receipt of adequate care, and chances of recovery.
OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 ACB Providers Project 2.0 aims to strengthen the ability of health care providers to address this community's COVID-19-related health care needs. Informed by the COVID
