Larvicidal Potential of Caribbean Plants.

Mosquitoes are vectors for numerous arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika which continue to negatively impact the health of Caribbean populations. Within the region, synthetic insecticides are primarily used to control mosquito populations. In many countries however, these compounds are becoming less effective due to resistance, and they may also be harmful to the environment. Thus, there is a significant need for the development of alternative agents to combat the mosquito threat in the Caribbean. Worldwide, botanical-based products are being increasingly investigated for vector c

Further examination of the candidate genes in chromosome 12p13 locus for late-onset Alzheimer disease.

A broad region on chromosome 12p13 has been intensely investigated for novel genetic variants associated with Alzheimer disease (AD). We examined this region with 23 microsatellite markers using 124 North European (NE) families and 209 Caribbean Hispanic families with late-onset AD (FAD). Significant evidence for linkage was present in a 5-cM interval near 20 cM in both the NE FAD (LOD = 3.5) and the Caribbean Hispanic FAD (LOD = 2.2) datasets. We further investigated these families and an independent NE case-control dataset using 14 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The initial screenin

Estimating occurrence of Strongyloides stercoralis in the Caribbean island countries: Implications for monitoring and control.

BACKGROUND: Few data are available for the prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis in the Caribbean region. This frequently under diagnosed soil-transmitted helminth (STH) can result in long-term low intensity chronic infections that are asymptomatic or can cause varied intestinal disturbances. With autoinfections, infections lasting over 60 years can occur and hyperinfections lead to high morbidity and mortality. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Historical literature was searched to determine the prevalence of S. stercoralis in the Caribbean island countries with some additional countries and

Molecular detection of Salmonella spp., Listeria spp. and Brucella spp. in fresh artisanal cheese marketed in the city of Barranquilla: A pilot study.

Introduction: Each year approximately 3 million people die as the result of foodborne diseases. The fresh artisan (handmade) cheese produced and distributed in the Colombian Caribbean region is a native product from the departments of Córdoba, Sucre, Bolívar, Atlántico, Magdalena, Cesar, and La Guajira. Its mass consumption increases the risk of infection with Salmonella spp., Listeria spp., and Brucella spp., as it is made with a very rustic technology, with unpasteurized cow milk, without standardized and hygienic procedures and its storage is inadequate. Objective: To detect the presence of

[Abundance of sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus (Lamarck) on North, East and West coasts of Margarita Island (Venezuela) ].

The sea urchin roe reach a very high price in the international fish product market favoring the increase in the catches of this resource and overfishing in some countries. In the Island of Margarita (Venezuela) some species, Lytechinus variegatus (Lamarck) among others, are consumed as food but studies to determine abundance of the resource are unknown. Nine sample stations (depth less than 2 m) on the North, East and West coast of Margarita Island were visited in six different occasions between February/1998 and February/1999 to study the population density (urchins/m2) of L. variegatus. Mitoxantrone in NMO Spectrum Disorder in a Large Multicenter Cohort in French Caribbean.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Preventing relapses in neuromyelitis Optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a primary goal. New effective molecules are often expensive and not readily available in regions with fragile health systems. Assessing the efficacy and safety of less costly therapeutic alternatives is necessary. We aim to evaluate the efficacy and safety of mitoxantrone (MiTX) in NMOSD. METHODS: This is an observational, multicenter, open study of 86 NMOSD-treated patients with prospective follow-up over 30 years. The first endpoint was the first relapse at the 96-week follow-up. Upside-down swimming: in situ observations of inverted orientation in Gigantactis, with a new depth record for the Ceratioidei.

This note reports on eight observations of inverted swimming behavior by species of ceratioid whipnose anglerfishes in the genus Gigantactis, from the Caribbean, tropical east Atlantic, tropical western Indian Ocean, the north-east and north-west Pacific and south-west Pacific. It covers four putative species and strongly suggests that this is the normal behavior for the genus. A possible reason is briefly discussed. In addition, a new depth record of 5866 m for the ceratioid anglerfish is recorded.

Morphomolecular and pathological study of Scaphanocephalus sp. in new host Siganus argenteus in the Arabian Gulf.

In this study, Scaphanocephalus parasite (Platyhelminthes: Heterophyidae) metacercariae were found in Siganus argenteus (forktail rabbitfish or streamlined spinefoot) in the Arabian Gulf of Jubail province, Saudi Arabia. The findings may constitute new host and locality records for this parasite. Based on the number of black spots containing parasite cysts per fish, our study indicated that Siganus argenteus had high infection intensities of encysted metacercariae belonging to the genus Scaphanocephalus. Of the 3500 S. argenteus specimens examined, 800 (22.9%) showed multiple black cysts over

Morphology, toxicity and molecular characterization of Gambierdiscus spp. towards risk assessment of ciguatera in south central Cuba.

Ciguatera poisoning is caused by the consumption of reef fish or shellfish that have accumulated ciguatoxins, neurotoxins produced by benthic dinoflagellates of the genera Gambierdiscus or Fukuyoa. Although ciguatera constitutes the primary cause of seafood intoxication in Cuba, very little information is available on the occurrence of ciguatoxins in the marine food web and the causative benthic dinoflagellate species. This study conducted on the south-central coast of Cuba reports the occurrence of Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa genera and the associated benthic genera Ostreopsis and Prorocentrum.

Lobomycosis-like disease in common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from Belize and Mexico: bridging the gap between the Americas.

Lobomycosis and lobomycosis-like diseases (LLD) (also: paracoccidioidomycosis) are chronic cutaneous infections that affect Delphinidae in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. In the Americas, these diseases have been relatively well-described, but gaps still exist in our understanding of their distribution across the continent. Here we report on LLD affecting inshore bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from the Caribbean waters of Belize and from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean off the southwestern coast of Mexico. Photo-identification and catalog data gathered between 1992 and 2

Social determinants and inequalities in tuberculosis incidence in Latin America and the Caribbean.

OBJECTIVE: To identify key social determinants of tuberculosis (TB) incidence among countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), a geographic area regarded as one of the most socioeconomically unequal in the world METHODS: An ecological study was conducted at the country level. Data were obtained from several institutional-based sources. Random-effects regression modeling was used to explore the relationship between several social determinants indicators and TB incidence rates in 20 LAC countries in 1995-2012. Standard gap and gradient metrics of social inequality in TB incidence among

New genus and species of fish blood fluke (Digenea: Aporocotylidae Odhner, 1912) from stoplight parrotfish, Sparisoma viride (Bonnaterre, 1788), (Labridae: Scarinae) in the Caribbean Sea.

Primisanguis caribbeanensis n. gen., n. sp. (Digenea: Aporocotylidae) infects the stoplight parrotfish, Sparisoma viride (Bonnaterre, 1788), (Labridae: Scarinae) in the Caribbean Sea off La Parguera (17°58'26" N, 67°02'47"W), Puerto Rico. It is most easily distinguished from other nominal aporocotylids by the combination of having an adult body that is approximately 5-10 times longer than wide, a sinistral posterolateral body protuberance, tegumental body spines that are straight (lacking recurved tip) and wrap dorsoventrally around the body margin, posterior ceca that are 2-5 times the anteri

Phylogeography and molecular evolution of dengue 2 in the Caribbean basin, 1981-2000.

We sequenced the envelope (E) genes of 59 DEN-2 isolates collected from ten Caribbean islands, six South American countries, and two Central American countries between 1981 and 2000, a period characterized by hyperendemicity and increased incidence of severe dengue. Fifty-two isolates belonged to "American/Asian" subtype IIIb, possessing a characteristic polar residue at envelope aa position 390 (N [n = 48] or S [n = 4]) common to that group. Six isolates from Trinidad (1981), Honduras (1991 [4]), and El Salvador (1987) fell into the "Native American" subtype V (D at aa 390), and one from Hond

Meat from small ruminants and public health in the Caribbean.

Small ruminants are very important livestock species in the English-speaking Caribbean. Total populations for the Caribbean region are approximately 677,000 goats and 281,000 sheep. Although the primary purpose of sheep and goats is meat production for local consumption, the animals are also a source of emergency income. Production systems are generally characterised as small-scale and low-input, and few breeding or productivity records are kept. Although intra-regional trade does occur between Caribbean countries, there is insufficient production for extra-regional trade. The Caribbean countr

Robotic Surgery in Guyana: First Report From the Caribbean.

Although robotic surgery is widely accepted as the gold standard approach for a variety of operative procedures, the Caribbean region lacked access to surgical robotics until recently. The surgical fraternity in Guyana recognized the need for progress to robotic surgery. Herein, we report the first robotic surgery procedure performed in Guyana and highlight the obstacles and challenges faced, and the success achieved while introducing the technology in a low-resource setting. Using the SSI Mantra 3 Robotic Surgical System (SS Innovations International Inc., Haryana, India), a multidisciplinary

A look around the West Indies: The spices of life are secondary metabolites.

Natural products possess a wide range of bioactivities with potential for therapeutic usage. While the distribution of these molecules can vary greatly there is some correlation that exists between the biodiversity of an environment and the uniqueness and concentration of natural products found in that region or area. The Caribbean and pan-Caribbean area is home to thousands of species of endemic fauna and flora providing huge potential for natural product discovery and by way, potential leads for drug development. This can especially be said for marine natural products as many of are rapidly

Health engagement in national climate commitments of small island developing states: A content analysis of Caribbean nationally determined contributions.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate how health is incorporated into the NDCs of Caribbean SIDS and their financing challenges. METHODS: The study analysed the NDCs of sixteen Caribbean SIDS using content analysis to investigate their level of engagement with health. RESULTS: Caribbean SIDS have a high level of reference with health in their NDCs relative to other developing countries which is expected to increase as they update them. All sixteen countries included health in their NDCs, mostly with regard to adaptation to be achieved by 2025/2030. Five countries provided targets in health aimed at incr

Non-native coral species dominate the fouling community on a semi-submersible platform in the southern Caribbean.

A coral community was examined on a semi-submersible platform that was moored at the leeward side of Curaçao, in the southern Caribbean, from August 2016 until August 2017. This community included several non-native or cryptogenic species. Among them were two scleractinian corals (Tubastraea coccinea and T. tagusensis) and two octocorals (Chromonephthea sp. and an unidentified Nephtheidae sp.). This is the first reported presence of T. tagusensis in the southern Caribbean, and the genus Chromonephthea in the Caribbean region.
