Carpaine, a major alkaloid present in Carica papaya leaves, has been shown to increase platelet counts in patients suffering from thrombocytopenia. Numerous commercial papaya leaf products are available, but few provide proper bioactive ingredient information. We present herein a technique for rapid screening of carpaine in these products using DART-MS. The results indicate that carpaine was detected in various forms (powder, solution) of papaya leaves. Its presence was confirmed by examining the mass pattern when conducted on a standard solution at both low and high voltages (+10 V and +90 V)

Dengue virus is a mosquito-borne pathogen that causes a variety of illnesses ranging from mild fever to severe and fatal dengue haemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome. One of the major clinical manifestations of severe dengue infection is thrombocytopenia. The dengue non-structural protein 1 (NS1) is the primary protein that stimulates immune cells via toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), induces platelets, and promotes aggregation, which could result in thrombocytopenia. The leaf extracts of Carica papaya seem to have therapeutic benefits in managing thrombocytopenia associated with dengue. The

BACKGROUND: Soil transmitted helminths (STHs) are among the world's neglected tropical diseases. Morbidity due to STHs is greatest in school-age children who typically have the highest burden of infection. In 2001, WHO passed a resolution for the use of large-scale mass drug administration (MDA) to deworm vulnerable children through school based programs. Though effective, there is concern that MDA might not be sustainable over extended periods. Additionally the current MDA strategy does not consider child malnutrition, a very common malady in resource limited countries. We report a pilot eval

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Carica papaya seeds can improve indigestion, relieve rheumatic pain and be applied as a paste for treating ringworm and psoriasis in traditional medicine, which indicates that they possess antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. As one of the most common non-albicans Candida species, Candida tropicalis has led to a notable rise in morbidity and mortality rates because of increased drug resistance. Papaya seed essential oil (PSEO) contained over 99% benzyl isothiocyanate and exhibited antifungal activity against C. tropicalis, particularly fl
